Description

Carros de Foc - also known as Chariots of Fire - is a high-mountain circuit that links nine mountain refuges within the stunning Aigüestortes i Llac de Sant Maurici National Park.

Experience the striking contrasts of the Pyrenean valleys, where northern and southern landscapes differ under varied climates.

Wander through a rugged granite landscape filled with majestic peaks and glimmering lakes over six days. Journey from the lush Atlantic forests of the Arán Valley near the Colomers refuge, across the rugged, boulder-strewn landscapes of Contraix, and past the shimmering, crystal-clear lakes that guide your way each day.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife—chamois, roe deer, and marmots may be watching from below, while griffon vultures, golden eagles, and bearded vultures soar overhead, spotting you long before you see them.

Your journey begins with a transfer from Boí Taull to Planell d’Aigüestortes, leading through forests, alpine meadows, and shimmering lakes like Eixerola, Cubieso, and Tort. We'll then trek through high passes (up to 2,906 m) and stay in various mountain refuges, including Colomina, Josep M. Blanc, Amitges, Colomers, and Ventosa i Calvell. The adventure peaks with the ascent to Contraix pass (2,748 m) before a scenic descent to Estany Llong.

    Itinerary

    Day 1: Refugio Estany Llong – Refugio Colomina (15 km, +950 m / -450 m)

Begin by meeting your guide in Boí Taull, followed by a taxi transfer to Planell d’Aigüestortes. Your trek starts as you leave Estany Llong behind, ascending first through lush forests then onto expansive alpine meadows until you reach the Dellui pass at 2,577 m.

Along the way, you’ll pass close to several remarkable lakes—including Eixerola, Cubieso, Mariolo, and the vast Tort lake—before walking along an old wagon trail once used for transporting dam materials. End your day with dinner and an overnight stay at Colomina refuge, nestled by Colomina lake at 2,415 m.

    Day 2: Refugio Colomina – Refugio Josep M. Blanc (10 km, +600 m / -700 m)

After breakfast, enjoy a shorter but equally scenic stage. You’ll begin by climbing a gentle slope alongside a small canal, eventually reaching Pas de l’Ós via a few steps. The trail takes you around Saburó lake, up a hill to 2,667 m, and then off the beaten path toward Tuca de Saburó at 2,906 m. Descending through postcard-perfect forests and past serene lakes, you arrive at the charming Josep M. Blanc refuge, beautifully set on a peninsula within Tort de Peguera lake, where you’ll dine and spend the night.

    Day 3: Refugio Josep M. Blanc – Refugio Ernest Mallafré – Refugio de Amitges (16 km, +960 m / -850 m)

Kick off the day with breakfast before venturing into a landscape dominated by lush black pine forests near the Ernest Mallafré refuge. This leg also offers stunning views of Sant Maurici lake and the iconic Els Encantats, key symbols of the national park. Opt for the variant route that takes you through the Monasterio pass and a quaint rural valley, leading to an evening at Amitges refuge where dinner and overnight accommodations await.

    Day 4: Refugio de Amitges – Refugio de Saboredo – Refugio Colomers (11 km, +530 m / -750 m)

explore the wild, sparsely vegetated terrain around the Amitges refuge, highlighted by striking vertical rock spires. Your path then guides you through a majestic glacial cirque toward the Saboredo refuge. From there, cross another glacial cirque at Colomers, framed by peaks rising between 2,700 and 2,900 m—a region famed for its many lakes. Conclude the day with a delicious dinner and an overnight stay at Colomers refuge.

    Day 5: Refugio de Colomers – Refugio Ventosa i Calvell (12.5 km, +1,000 m / -950 m)

Begin your day with breakfast and an ascent to the Caldes pass, which nears 2,600 m, followed by the Crestada pass that leads you to the Restanca Refuge—an ideal spot for spotting marmots. Retrace your steps back to Coll de Crestada pass and then descend alongside the scenic Monges, Mangades, and Travessani lakes. Arrive at Ventosa i Calvell refuge (2,273 m), surrounded by dramatic peaks like the renowned Montardo, and enjoy another stunning sunset, dinner, and a comfortable overnight stay.

    Day 6: Refugio Ventosa i Calvell – Refugio Estany Llong (10 km, +800 m / -900 m)

On the final day, after breakfast, take on the trek’s most iconic challenge: the ascent to the Contraix pass, the highest point at 2,748 m. Marvel at the impressive rock formations and sweeping vistas from the top. A long, scenic descent of about 900 m, dotted with picturesque lakes, brings you back to Estany Llong. After several days immersed in high-mountain beauty and solitude, your trek concludes with a transfer back to Boí Taull and the end of services.

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
