Do you want to have an amazing experience in one of the top ski resorts in Japan? Then join me for this backcountry skiing day in Niseko.
Lying on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, Niseko is one of the country's most famous winter destinations. It's well known for its great powder snow and for offering attractive options for the adventurers who want to ski off the beaten tracks.
As a local mountain guide, I'll take you to backcountry lines that I've been using for a long time.
During this journey, we'll be skiing around the area of Mount Iwao, Mount Nito and Mount Chise, among other peaks. We'll take hiking trails to the summit of those mountains and enjoy the feeling of getting there on our own. And then, of course, we'll have an exciting experience skiing down!
If you´ve got touring experience, you can use skins. If you don´t, you can always hike up or use snowshoes instead.
As for the technical equipment, I recommend you to have a shovel, a beacon and a probe, as well as an adequate backpack and ski poles. In case you don't have the necessary gear, you can rent it from our store.
In case I am unavailable to guide, my colleagues with Niseko Winter Guide qualification and a member of Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Personnel in my guide company will be able to guide you.
Below, you'll find further details about the itinerary. The Guide Fee below is for Group Tours. Please check out the private program if you prefer that option.
Please contact me if you want more information about next departures for backcountry skiing in Niseko. We can arrange a private program or a group tour up to 5 people. When contacting me, please tell me whether you're interested in a private tour or joining a group tour.
I will be glad to show you the best spots of this beautiful region of my country!
Don't forget to check Lift Accessed Sidecountry skiing in Niseko if you are not so keen on hiking up mountains by yourself, or check the Ski Mt Yotei programme if you're an experienced backcountry skier willing to challenge this route.
7:45-8:10 I will pick you up at where you stay at if you don’t have transportation.
8:00-8:20 Meet up at our Guide’s office.
8:30 A briefing about the tour. Then we’ll leave towards a mountain around Niseko.
Around 9:00 We’ll start Hiking up.
Around 10:00 We’ll be skiing down about 150 meter to 300 meters.
Around 11:15 We’ll be hiking up again to ski down another slope.
Around 13:00 We’ll go back to the bottom of a mountain and then return to the Guide’s office.
Around 13:30 You can have a Photo Session (it’s optional).
14:30-16:00 It’s the end of the tour. I’ll take you back to your hotel if needed.

I am Tomoki Takaku and I´m the founder and head guide at Powder Company Guides. I am a JMGA mountain and ski guide, based in the notorious deep power land of Niseko in Hokkaido, Japan. I am also a professional snowboarder sponsored by The North Face and have been traveling all over the world as an extreme freeride snowboarder. I´ve ridden a lot of big mountains across the globe, including in Mongolia, Siberia and Alaska. I've starred in a few films (like Icon) and TV shows. My expertise also is in new product development for The North Face, and also made my own signature snowboard with GENTEMSTICK under “GT” and “Big Floater”.
In the winter, I am based at the foot of Annupuri ski resort in Niseko. I´m one of the most experienced loca guides: I´ve been guiding here since 1999. I also enjoy teaching the basics of how to ride powder and to communicate the dangers in the backcountry.
In the summer, I enjoy guiding Stand Up Paddle “SUP” in the rivers and oceans near Niseko.
I have 50hrs of Wilderness First Aid qualification as well as CAA qualified.
In case I am unavailable to guide, my colleagues with Niseko Winter Guide qualification and a member of Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Personnel in my guide company will be able to guide you.
If I´m not available to guide you personally, one of the certified guides in my team will take good care of you. We promise once you get a taste of the powder in Niseko, there is no going back!

I went with two guide colleagues of Tomoki, Aki Kobayashi and Makoto Yamada, and they were awesome! I wish I could have done more trips with the guys! The two guided trips were awesome! The visibility was not clear for Mt Yotei and we ended up going to a different mountain. The guides on both trips were knowledge and fun guys to be in the backcountry with. I would highly recommend using Powder Guide in the future. Great memories and great times! Thank you so much for helping to organize the trips, much appreciated :)
