In the heart of the Huasteca Potosina, in the mexican state of San Luis Potosi, there is a breathtaking place that seems out of a legend: the Swallows Cave.
Also known as the sotano de las Golondrinas in spanish, this natural abyss is undoubtedly a world’s wonder! Its 376 meters allow an incredible single free fall all the way to the bottom. This place is so unbelievably fantastic, that for the longest time, it was considered the deepest free fall on Earth.
Rappelling down the cave is an adventure you cannot miss. You’ll be hanging from a harness and a rope for about 20 minutes. And once you reach the bottom you will feel as if you entered a whole different planet. Here, the noises of the birds, and the green colors contrasting with the humidity will hypnotize you.
Climbing back up, is a more challenging activity. It will demand around one and half hours of climbing. However, the adrenaline you’ll get, as you reach the top, will make it completely worth it. And of course, having the chance to explore the inside of this magical place, is an opportunity you can’t pass on.
Over 2 million white-collared swifts apus apus call this intriguing cave their home. These curious creatures are mistakenly confused with swallows. Thus the name of this place. So, on top of the rappelling fun, you’ll be able to spot these birds, including green conures, which nest in its walls.
A true treat from nature is being able to see a spiral of birds flying away after sunrise, and returning to their nest before sunset. Also, there are some falcons flying above, searching for their next prey.

The trip was awful. I was waiting for Alvaro to follow up with my concerns but he never did. So, I’m sending this review. The initial plan was to do the two day hike to Mt. Izta. Christian picked us up on day 1 around 10am. By the time we got to the site, it was after 4pm. We then did a quick acclimatization hike, ate, and went to bed. We got up at 11pm and started the hike. We were slow but steady. About three hours into the hike, Christian says we got about 3 more hours to get to the first stop and we won’t make it. So he turned us around and we went back down the same trial we had initially hiked up. I did puke the nasty dinner they fed us too. This trip was very disappointing and I felt like this was more of a kindergarten outing. We had no intentions of flying from the states to having a crappy experience. I am convinced this was fraud and the 3 summit adventure company had no intentions of helping us to summit. They had our money and the service had ended as far as they were concerned. I’ve summitted Mt Kilimanjaro, hiked Machu Picchu, and trek Mt Blanc alps. So, I’m familiar with hikes and felt more confident with a guide. Unfortunately, this experience was extremely disappointing. I hate to leave a negative but factful review but hikers should know to avoid this company.

The guides with 3 Summits were incredible! The company was super communicative and answered all my questions ahead of the climbs. I did the trip solo and the guides were fun and kind and I truly felt like I was climbing with experts.

Loved our guide, he was perfect for us. We felt in security with him. He has a lot of mountain experience, is passionnate about the mointains and his work, knows all the tricks and techniques and always makes sure we are going well. He is in great physical shape, so he could go much quicker than us, but he adopted our pace and never put pressure to go faster. We enjoyed talking with him, he’s open, friendly and interesting. He speaks English and Spanish perfectly. The organization was also impeccable, with quick follow-ups and regular contacts prior to the trip. All the equipment provided was in good working order. All in all a wonderful expericence, I highly recommend them.

Great trip. Highly recommend La Malinche for those wishing to acclimatize to Pico. Our guides were professional and friendly. We had a difficult moment near the top of the summit, but our guide coached us through it and we successfully summitted.

This was a great trip. Well organised and with good attention so everything went smoothly. Good to have the acclimatisation hike up La Malinche before doing Pico de Orizaba. Special thanks to Mesh (guide for Orizaba) who was very helpful and developed my confidence as well as being understanding of my relative inexperience on ice. Whole team from 3 summits were definitely there to make this a fantastic experience. Makes me want to do more.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
