In the heart of the Huasteca Potosina, in the mexican state of San Luis Potosi, there is a breathtaking place that seems out of a legend: the Swallows Cave.
Also known as the sotano de las Golondrinas in spanish, this natural abyss is undoubtedly a world’s wonder! Its 376 meters allow an incredible single free fall all the way to the bottom. This place is so unbelievably fantastic, that for the longest time, it was considered the deepest free fall on Earth.
Rappelling down the cave is an adventure you cannot miss. You’ll be hanging from a harness and a rope for about 20 minutes. And once you reach the bottom you will feel as if you entered a whole different planet. Here, the noises of the birds, and the green colors contrasting with the humidity will hypnotize you.
Climbing back up, is a more challenging activity. It will demand around one and half hours of climbing. However, the adrenaline you’ll get, as you reach the top, will make it completely worth it. And of course, having the chance to explore the inside of this magical place, is an opportunity you can’t pass on.
Over 2 million white-collared swifts apus apus call this intriguing cave their home. These curious creatures are mistakenly confused with swallows. Thus the name of this place. So, on top of the rappelling fun, you’ll be able to spot these birds, including green conures, which nest in its walls.
A true treat from nature is being able to see a spiral of birds flying away after sunrise, and returning to their nest before sunset. Also, there are some falcons flying above, searching for their next prey.

From the outset, communication was outstanding. Every detail was clearly laid out in advance—gear requirements, timing, altitude expectations, transportation, and contingency planning. There was no guesswork, which is exactly what you want when preparing for a high-altitude climb. Questions were answered quickly and thoroughly, and it was clear that this is a team that takes preparation seriously. The acclimatization climb on La Malinche was handled perfectly. The pace was deliberate and thoughtful, allowing proper adjustment to altitude while still making the climb enjoyable in its own right. The guides were attentive throughout—checking in regularly, adjusting as needed, and sharing insight about the terrain and conditions. It felt purposeful, not rushed. By the time we moved on to Pico de Orizaba, everything was dialed in. The logistics were seamless—transportation, lodging, meals, and timing all worked together so the only thing left to focus on was the climb. That level of organization makes a real difference at altitude. Summit day on Orizaba is where the experience of 3 Summits Adventures really stood out. The guides managed pace, safety, and decision-making with confidence and precision. The glacier section, in particular, was handled with clarity and professionalism. At no point did anything feel uncertain—just a steady, controlled push to the summit. What sets this team apart is not just that everything went smoothly—it’s that it was clearly designed to. The guides are not only technically strong, but highly communicative and genuinely invested in your success and safety. If you’re considering an acclimatization climb followed by Pico de Orizaba, I would highly recommend 3 Summits Adventures. It’s the kind of experience where the preparation, execution, and guiding all come together exactly the way you hope they will.

Alejandro, my guide, is exceptional. His ascent was inspiring to watch, and his passion for the mountains is what kept me going as we pushed for the summit. He is a very experienced, knowledgeable mountaineer and it was an honour to meet him, let alone climb with him. The rest of the 3summits team, Pati, Becca, Gabi, and others that I met along the way, were amazing. So kind, full of life, and took such good care of me while I was on the mountain. Cannot praise this company and the people that make it possible enough!

Guides (Christian, Raul, Musta) were great and our group all achieved our climbing goals: some to the top, some higher than they thought they could go.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
