Description
Located in the heart of Arusha National Park, around 70 km from Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers an incredible opportunity to go on a day hike. Join us as we take you to the top of this high peak in Tanzania.
Standing at a staggering 4,565 meters, Meru is a colossal volcano which lies in the north of the city of Arusha. It is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, after Kilimanjaro and the fifth highest mountain in Africa.
The trek is ideal for those looking for a challenging ascent with a less crowd. And, it can also serve us as a warm-up trek for Kilimajaro trek given its technical requirements and high altitude.
There are more than 10 different trekking routes to ascend this high peak around the lower forest and it can take anywhere between 3 to 8 hours to get to the top. Our day trip will take around 7 hours including ascent and descent and you will be covering around 18 km both ways.
We’ll begin our adventure by heading towards Arusha National Park. Here, you’ll find yourself at the foothills of the giant peak. From here begins our ascent. The trail provides a glimpse of local culture along with opening up a diverse ecosystem of the park. You’ll be amazed to see the greenery and the amazing animal life of the region on your way.
Finally, we’ll reach the summit in about 4 hours to see spectacular views of neighboring peaks. Thereafter, we’ll descend via the same route and get back to Arusha, ending this amazing hike.

My Mountain Trekking Team, lead by Shem gave me a very plesant experience. And specially the porter Joshua gave me a nice stay in the Mountains. On the Technical part the guide was very competent as Well. However: My experience with explore-share, not the best. I came for the technical part. I asked if the technical part was doable at this time of year, they said yes, but it was not. Nobody does it at this time of the year and my climbingguide was very surprised that anyone booked at this time for the Technical part. You could just have told me: “wait a month”. Our guide, Shem, was absolutely fabulous. He was an absolute delight and a total joy to spend time with. His knowledge was extensive and his calm demeanour and quiet wisdom and dignity made us feel totally safe and secure. The team of chef and porters that Shem brought with him were also superstars. In June, 2009 I climbed Mount Kenya, with Trekking Mount Kenya. I spent 4 days on the mountain and experienced the wonderful challenge and the friendly helpfulness and knowledge of my guides and porters.
