Easy glacier trekking on the Pastoruri Glacier, Day trip from Huaraz

In the southern part of the Cordillera Blanca, in Los Andes, lies a magical place home of one of the most beautiful glaciers on Earth! Join me on this trekking adventure across the Pastoruri Glacier, departing from Huaraz, Peru.

Pastoruri occupies an Andean mountain at about 5,250 masl. Here, we’ll encounter steep edges and crevassed areas. So it is important to follow an experienced guide to ensure your safety.

On our hiking adventure, we’ll depart around 8:00 am. Then, we will drive south of Huaraz until we reach the Recuay province at 3,300 masl. Thereon, we’ll continue to Ticampampa at 3,400 masl. After that, we will pass Catac (3,500 m) and Pachacoto. It is on this last place that we’ll reach an unpaved road with fantastic sceneries of sheep herders and mountainous landscapes.

We will continue driving until we get to Patacocha, where we’ll be able to observe native birds including wild ducks, andean geese, caracara birds amongst others. Later, we’ll head to an area where we can try natural gasified water from a stream underneath us. After that, we’ll reach PuyaRymondi, an area brimming with wild flowers, and Pumampampa, where we’ll find a small lake that  changes color due to the sun and the minerals on its rocks.

Then, right before arriving to Pastoruri, we’ll stop by to admire petroglyph paints. And once we reach the glacier, we can hike up or even horse ride to get to the Iced Lake and Ice Cave. We’ll get plenty of time to enjoy the marvellous views, to later return the same way back to Huaraz.
