Rising to 7,115 feet above sea level in the stunning scenery of the northern Cascade Range, Ruth Mountain is the perfect peak for first-time mountaineers.
The summit offers excellent vistas out over nearby Pickets Ridge and a unique view on the north side of Mount Shuksan. The two-day ascent also serves as an excellent learning experience for anyone who wants to get into mountaineering.
Our adventure begins with a 7 am orientation, before we drive on to the trailhead and begin hiking to our high camp. The four to five mile hike is fairly strenuous, but takes us though an ancient forest and alpine meadows.
Once at our high camp spot, we will go over all the fundamentals of setting up a leave-no-trace camp. The rest of the day will then be spent going over necessary mountaineering skills for our ascent, including snow climbing techniques, using an ice axe, self belay and self arrest, and movement in balance. We’ll also try to go over knot tying for climbing, belay techniques and signals, basic anchor work and rappelling, if we have the time.
Getting a pre-dawn start, we will wake up and begin our summit attempt on the second day. As the sun rises, we will get our first views out over the summit and have the opportunity to try out many of our newly acquired mountaineering skills.
We’ll spend some time enjoying the excellent views from the summit, before descending back to base camp and packing it up. From here, we will hike back to the cars and drive back to our starting point.
So what are you waiting for? Book now for an incredible introductory mountaineering adventure to the summit of Ruth Mountain in Washington State!
If you like the look of this trip, but want to try out a slightly more challenging peak, then we think you will also enjoy our 3-day ascent of Mount Shuksan via the Sulphide Glacier.
