Description

I invite you to join an 8-day ski mountaineering expedition to Mount Kazbek (5,054 m), one of the most iconic objectives in the Caucasus and one of Georgia’s most impressive high-altitude peaks.

This adventure begins in Stepantsminda, a mountain town located beneath the slopes of Kazbek and surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in the Georgian Caucasus. From there, we follow the classic south route, gradually ascending towards the Gergeti Glacier and the higher mountain huts.

Along the way, you will experience a true ski mountaineering journey that combines glacier travel, high-altitude climbing, and spectacular freeride terrain. The route takes us through an impressive alpine environment, with wide glaciated slopes, volcanic landscapes, and breathtaking views across the Caucasus mountains.

One of the highlights of the expedition is crossing the Gergeti Glacier as we make our way towards the Meteostation, our base for the summit attempt. The itinerary is designed with proper acclimatization and weather flexibility, giving us the best possible chance to reach the summit safely.

The main objective of the trip is to climb Mount Kazbek on touring skis and, conditions permitting, enjoy an unforgettable ski descent from high on the mountain. Standing on the summit and skiing back down through this vast alpine terrain is a unique experience for strong skiers looking for a serious and rewarding challenge.

Please contact me if you are planning a ski touring in the Caucasus mountains. I will be glad to provide you all the information you need and guide you around some of the most beautiful places near Mount Kazbek.

    Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Stepantsminda

Your adventure begins at Tbilisi Airport, where you will meet your guide and start the drive to Stepantsminda, a mountain village located at the foot of Mount Kazbek.

After arriving, we settle into the hotel and complete a full gear check. If any additional equipment is needed, your guide can help arrange rentals locally. In the evening, we enjoy a traditional Georgian dinner and go over the expedition plan together.

Day 2: Ski touring approach to Altihut

Today, we begin our ski touring approach towards Sabertse Pass and Altihut. Depending on snow conditions, we may need to carry our skis through some of the lower sections before reaching continuous snow.

The route takes us past the famous Gergeti Trinity Church before continuing into the alpine terrain below Mount Kazbek. Our destination is Altihut, a comfortable mountain hut with beautiful views of the glacier and surrounding peaks. To make the ascent easier, the main expedition equipment will be transported by horses.

Day 3: Ski tour to the Meteostation

We continue higher towards the Meteostation, which will serve as our base for the summit attempt.

The route crosses the impressive Gergeti Glacier, bringing us into true glaciated terrain with ice formations, seracs, and wide volcanic slopes. Depending on the conditions, we may use ski crampons or carry skis for some sections. Once we reach the hut, we rest, settle in, and prepare for the acclimatization days ahead.

    Day 4: Acclimatization ski tour

Today is dedicated to acclimatization. Depending on weather, snow, and group conditions, we make a ski tour towards Kazbek Pass or in the direction of Mount Ortsveri, reaching approximately 4,000 to 4,200 meters.

This day helps the body adjust to the altitude while giving us a chance to evaluate the snowpack and skiing conditions on the mountain.

Day 5: Glacier skills and summit preparation

This day is reserved for technical training, safety practice, and rest before the summit push.

We review key glacier and ski mountaineering skills, including rope travel, kick turns on steep terrain, crampon and ice axe use, avalanche transceiver practice, and other techniques that may be needed higher on the route.

There may also be time to visit the small modern chapel near the Meteostation and ring the bell for good luck, a tradition among climbers and ski mountaineers before attempting Kazbek.

    Day 6: Summit day

This is the most demanding and rewarding day of the expedition.

We start very early in the morning and skin across the glacier towards the upper plateau of Mount Kazbek. Higher up, the terrain becomes steeper and may require bootpacking with crampons and an ice axe, depending on snow and ice conditions.

After reaching the summit of Mount Kazbek at 5,054 meters, we prepare for one of the highlights of the trip: the ski descent. If weather and snow conditions allow, we ski down the upper slopes of Kazbek and return to the Meteostation through the vast glaciated terrain of the Gergeti Glacier. Mount Kazbek is also known by its Georgian name, Mkinvartsveri, often translated as “ice-capped peak,” a fitting name for this unforgettable high-altitude ski mountaineering experience.

    Day 7: Contingency day

This day is kept as a reserve in case of poor weather or unfavorable mountain conditions.

If we summit successfully on Day 6, we may use this day for additional skiing around the Meteostation area or begin the descent back towards Stepantsminda earlier.

Day 8: Descent and transfer to Tbilisi

We ski and hike back down to Stepantsminda before transferring to Tbilisi. Depending on your travel plans, we can take you either to your hotel or directly to the airport.

We recommend spending extra time in Tbilisi before or after the expedition. Its food, wine, culture, and lively atmosphere make it a great place to celebrate the end of a ski mountaineering adventure in the Caucasus.

What people are saying about Rock'n'Snow

It was a great journey, within one week we ski toured in two locations: Chimbulak and Cosmostation. Everything was well organized and it was a pleasure to spend a time with a great team and experienced guide!

Dima is one of the most knowledgeable and comfortable guides I know. He lives and breathes the mountains. He understands the group perfectly and does everything to ensure safe skiing. Dima has a great sense of humor and finds an excellent rapport with each group member. He's a reliable companion.

Ski Touring in Karakol: Thanks for the Best Freeride Weekend! We went ski touring in the Karakol area (Kyrgyzstan) in January. I want to give a special thanks to our guide, Dmitry. This was my first ski tour in Kyrgyzstan, and I was a little nervous. But the guide did everything he could to make the trip perfect. What I liked: 1. Professionalism. He knows the terrain around Karakol perfectly. We didn't waste time searching for the "right" snow; from the very first day, we skied only on high-quality, safe slopes. 2.Safety. He constantly monitored the avalanche situation, took readings from the test blocks (he always let us try them ourselves, and explained the physics of snow). The group was confident that we were on the right route. 3. Adaptation to the group. One of us was going slowly, so the guide didn't rush ahead, but patiently waited for the one lagging behind. The faster guys didn't get bored either—he let them speed up on the descents on the safe shoulders. 4.Logistics. He helped with transfers from Bishkek and knows the best houses in Karakol (the flatbreads and tea were a lifesaver after long hikes). Who would recommend him to: ski touring beginners and experienced freeriders. The snow in Kyrgyzstan is incredible: powder, sun, and no people. The guide completely captured the region. Thank you so much, we'll definitely be back!

It was amazing and wonderful trip in my life with a great and very professional guide. I got an unforgettable good impressions from this climb for a lifetime. It’s just cool!

It was an amazing trip with Dmitry from Rock'n'Snow! From start to finish, everything was perfectly planned and organized, which made the whole experience smooth and stress-free. Dmitry is a true professional who is always one step ahead, constantly thinking about the safety and comfort of his clients. His deep knowledge of the mountains, attention to detail, and calm confidence in challenging situations gave me complete trust throughout the climb. He carefully assessed conditions, adapted plans when needed, and made sure I felt prepared and supported at every stage of the route. Beyond his technical skills, Dmitry is also a great companion in the mountains — patient, encouraging, and genuinely passionate about what he does. He shared valuable techniques and tips that I will carry with me on future climbs. I can wholeheartedly recommend Dmitry and Rock'n'Snow to anyone looking for a serious, safe, and unforgettable alpine mountaineering experience. I'm already looking forward to my next trip with him!
