Description

We will take you on yet another amazing loop-hike on Réunion Island! Join us as we venture on this GR R3 hike to cross the scenic Cirque of Mafate on this 6-day trip.

The trip takes us through the picturesque hamlets nestled in the mountains of the cirque. We will cross the beautiful Rivière des Galets multiple times, climb two passes to view spectacular vistas of the cirques of Salazie and Cilaos and enjoy authentic local cuisine on this trip.

The journey begins as we head towards Ilet à Cordes to start the ascent towards the Le Col du Taïbit pass. The pass lies on the crest between the Cilaos and Mafate cirques and offers stunning views as you cross it.

Next, we head towards Roche Plate. You will see spectacular waterfalls springing from a narrow gorge on the way. The trail leads to the Lowlands of Mafate. Carved out of multiple erosions, the landscape of the lowlands is a gorgeous mix of deep gorges, peaks, and flat plateaus. This site offers unobstructed views of the Cirque of Mafate.

Next, we will set on a loop within a loop, as we tread towards a group of hamlets of the Mafate Lowlands. It will be thrilling to cross a footbridge across Bras d’Oussy gorge as we move further.

The Cirque of Salazie stands as the last pit stop of the trek. After a thorough round, we will head back to Mafate. The path leads through the lush tropical rainforest until we reach Cilaos to mark an end to this incredible trip.

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice.
