Located in the Pindus Mountains in the north of Greece, Vikos Gorge dips at the southern slopes of Mount Tymfi, both of which form part of the Vikos-Aoös National Park. Its measurements are impressive, with a depth of 120-490 meters, a width as wide as 400 meters, and total length of 20 kilometers. Vikos Gorge is the deepest in the world.

A large chunk of Vikos Gorge is held within the Vikos-Aoös National Park in the northwest of Greece. Part of the Pindus Mountains, the 31,000-acre area hosts a collection of caves and rivers, lakes and deep canyons, thick forest and a wealthy ecosystem. A national park since 1973, the Vikos-Aoös National Park is listed as a UNESCO Geopark, which protects and researches geological environments and promotes the protection of the local communities.

Haven for rare wildlife

The vast rugged landscape of the gorge provides the ideal climate for a flourishing of wildlife. A large bundle of herbs grows in the region that were once used by “Vikos doctors” who believed them to have special medicinal properties. Elsewhere, one of the features of the gorge is the chamois, a rare species that lives at high altitude and can be found close to the rocky cliffs of Vikos. It hosts a rich mountain and forest ecosystem.
