The canton of St. Gallen lies in the northeast of Switzerland, and rests to the north on Lake Constance. The Rhine valley is to the east. The territory here are plains that rise towards more rugged and steeper terrain, stretching into the mountainous areas of the Alps. The mountains here are part of a larger area that is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
