### **If you are coming to Cuzco in search of an off the beaten trail far from the crowds, the Cachicata trek is just for you.** 

The **Cachicata trek** is one of the new alternative treks that Cuzco offers. It is a very historical place because the Incas extracted stones from here. With them they could build the villages of Ollantaytambo and the surrounding towns. 

Visitors from all around the world can witness the amazing effort done in past times to move those heavy stones to build the basement of Ollantaytambo.

This amazing trek ends right there in Ollantaytambo. It is the starting point to Machu Picchu. You’ll have the chance to take a train which takes you to the base of the citadel.

Let me share with you a sample itinerary of this Cachicata 4-day Trek. Any item can be adapted to your wishes and expectations. More details of the program are at the bottom of this description.

#### Sample Itinerary

**Day 01**

A transfer will take us from Cusco to Huarocondo, our trailhead. Passing by Pachar we’ll reach our first campsite, Corimarca (L, D).

**Day 02** 

Today we will walk from Corimarca to Queñacancha, where we’ll spend the second night (B, L, D).

**Day 03** 

Today we leave Queñacancha in direction to **Cachicata** in Ollantaytambo. Here we’ll take the train to Aguas Calientes, base of Machu Picchu (B, L, D).

**Day 04**

Early in the morning, we start our trekking tour in the citadel of Machu Picchu. The trek will take us around 2 h**ours up. Final transfer to Cuzco** where this program ends (B).

So, are you ready for an off the beaten path alternative trek to Machu Picchu? Then join us on this exciting Cachicata Trek to the renowned Inca ruins. I will be happy to guide you!

We drive from **Cusco** to **Pachar** located in the Sacred Valley. Then we arrive in Huaroncondor to the trailhead, here we will meet with porters and horses and we will prepare the camping equipment. Then we climb up the stairs and visit to Huarocondor terraces. Continue the trek to Raphcca, at 2,900 m. From here we hike up the valley, along the route we appreciate the Inca terraces, water channels, Quechua communities and endemic flora and fauna. We follow a steep trail that eventually bring us to a waterfall where we can pause to refresh our bodies. Walking further, we visit the little known Inca site of Corimarca, our first campsite.

Cusco - Huarocondo - Pachar - Corimarca

We climb across open meadows, reaching a zone of high altitude known as Puna, approaching the pass of Chancachuco 4,400 m. This part of the trek offers panoramic views of the highest peaks in the Cuzco region. Our route continues across a high plateau, we pass mountain lakes where we may see Andean and wetland birds, descending to our second campsite at Qeuñacancha, at 4080 meters of height.

Corimarca - Queñacancha

We hike downhill following the trail until we join the Inca water channel which comes from Maracocha Lake. From here we reach the temple call Intiwatana, which is located on the edge of the mountain called Apu Alambre, in front of the Veronica snow peak. Then we continue downhill to Choquetacarpo, an archaeological site, which was most likely the residence of architects who managed the Inca quarries and performed ceremonies at Intipunku. After lunch we will explore different sectors of one of the biggest Inca quarries, where massive carved blocks of pink rhyolite lie scattered in disarray. We descend to the train station and to take the train to Aguas Calientes town.

Queñacancha - Cachicata - Aguas Calientes

We’ll start early in the morning, so we can get to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate or Intipunku. We will trek the last 2 hours up to the mysterious city of Machu Picchu. Guided tour of Machu Picchu and then you can explore this Inca settlement by yourself. At night we will take the train to Ollantaytambo and transfer you to your hotel.

### **It’s my pleasure to invite you to this trekking program in Choquequirao. I think it’s an ideal stop in Cuzco for those who love nature and hiking.**

**Choquequirao** is a place as wonderful as Machu Picchu. However, it is not so popular and therefore, it’s always uncrowded. Ideal for those who enjoy the wild loneliness. 

The **archaeological town of Choquequirao** lies inside the jungle in the Andean valley. Its amazing wildlife is the result of a dry and subtropical weather. It is a main touristic attraction since visitors can find here a wide variety of flora and fauna. Among the most important species you will see the spectacled bear, the condor, butterflies and birds.  

Then, let me share a quick itinerary of my trekking program. It’s just an example. At the bottom of this description you can read the complete day-by-day details.

**Quick Itinerary**

*   **_Day 1:_** _From Cusco to Cachora and then to our camp in Santa Rosa._
    
*   **_Day 2:_** _From Santa Rosa to Choquequirao._
    
*   **_Day 3:_** _Leaving Choquequirao in direction to Chiquiska._
    
*   **_Day 4:_** _Finally, we’ll leave Chiquiska to reach Cachora again and back to Cusco._
    

The total price of this trip is **USD 400 per person**. Of course, it can vary according to the group size. Keep in mind that **the total cost of the trip must be paid once the booking is confirmed**.

Our first day starts driving from the village of Cachora. The path works its way down into the **Apurimac Valley** where we will have fantastic views of the snow-capped peaks in the distance. The area around Choquequirao is rich in wildlife and we will see a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Our campsite for the night is at **Santa Rosa (2200m)** which is on the other side of the Apurimac River. As the campsite is a little further, it is one of the quietest places to camp. So we can enjoy the beautiful scenery around us without distraction.

Today is probably the hardest day of the trek. To get to Choquequirao we need to make our way back up the opposite side of the Apurimac Valley which involves ascending about 800 m over a distance of 14 km. The views we’ll get today, mixed with the wide variety of flora and fauna, make it worth it.

Throughout the day we will see a wide variety of bromeliads, orchids and stands of bamboo. We’ll also hopefully see birds such as Quetzals, Toucans and a variety of humming birds. After about a 5-hour walk we’ll arrive to our campsite, close to **Choquequirao (3050m)** and settle in for the night. If the weather is clear, the views of the sun setting from here are amazing and we may be lucky enough to spot Condors soaring over the valley.

Santa Rosa - Choquequirao

Today’s focus is on **exploring Choquequirao**. Waking up early you’ll head off on a guided tour of the site during which you’ll see the most important and interesting sections of the city and learn about the Inca culture and the close relation between Choquequirao and Machu Picchu. 

Compared to Machu Picchu little is known about Choquequirao even though it has been known for much longer. Originally discovered in the 17th century by the Spanish, it lays abandoned and forgotten until recent years when tourism raised the profile of the city and exploration began. 

After your tour you’ll begin the trek back to Cachora along the same route we came. Our campsite for tonight is **Chiquiska** (1800m) in the base of the valley by the Apurimac River.

Today is the final day of the trek as we make our way back to Cachora. Winding our way back up the side of the valley, we’ll have our final views of Choquequirao in the distance before arriving to Cachora in the late afternoon and travelling by bus back to Cuzco.

### I come to propose you an alternative trail of the famous Inca Trail, which is usually crowded during the Peruvian high season.

The **Lares trail** is really beautiful and interesting. On the way you’ll find many local people and you will learn a lot from them. Furthermore, the final destination of the Lares trail is, of course, the **Machu Picchu!**

Lares is a village of the north of Cuzco. Our starting point will be in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, in Huarán. 

As for the route, it is moderate if we compare it to the Inca Trail. It has 2 high mountain passes over 4000 meters above sea level. That’s why **I always recommend to spend 3 or 4 days in Cuzco**, so you get acclimatized before the trek.

We must walk around **8 hours per day** at an altitude of 2900 meters or more. From there, you will enjoy the most outstanding panoramic views and mountain lakes. We will set up our camp in a local community.

I will pick you up from your hotel to take you on a scenic ride through the **Sacred Valley of the Incas** stopping for breakfast in the provincial town of Calca.  At 8 am, we leave Calca and continue our ride for about 3 hours until we get to the small town of **Lares** (3,100 m). We will start the walk up to the Trapiche River Valley. We’ll arrive to the village of Vilcabamba after 2:30 hours. There, we have lunch to later continue hiking up the valley for another 1:30 hours. When we reach the village of Huacawasi we will set up the camp and spend the night.

In the morning, we will learn some weaving techniques from local villagers while we admire their high quality products. We start trekking later today, after having lunch in the village. We will climb for about 2 hours to reach the top of Ipsaycocha Pass (4,500 m), the highest point of the trek. Then, we will descend gently for about 1 hour until we get to the place of our second campsite, near the Ipsaycocha Lake. If we are lucky, we can see Andean geese, Puna ibis and other birds around the lake. We then continue downhill until we arrive at our camp in Patacancha (3,750m) where we have tea and then dinner.

We continue our journey through the Patacancha Village. On the way we will see various local communities, like the Willoq (3,600m). It is a traditional Andean village where locals still wear typical cloths. Then we continue downhill to Pallata. After that we will go uphill to discover the archaeological site of Pumamarca, an astonishing Inca site. We then take a transport to **Ollantaytambo**, passing farming terraces and an ancient cemetery. We arrive at **Ollantaytambo** for lunch.

In the afternoon we will take the train to Aguas Calintes, enjoying spectacular views of changing countryside, from Andean highlands to lush tropical vegetation. We will stay for the night at a hostel in Aguas Calientes.

We wake up very early to climb up for 2 hours to the Inca citadel of **Machu Picchu**! Although it is hard to scramble up there, it is definitely worth seeing the “Lost City of the Incas” at its quietest in the early morning light!! Then the tour guide will show you around the Inca city and explains you about the history of each place. Afterwards, you will have an opportunity to climb for about 45 minutes up to **Huayna Picchu,** a peak that overlooks the ancient city and serves to take some panoramic pictures. Then, you will have time off to spend and explore **Machu Picchu** on your own. Finally, you can take either a shuttle bus back down to Aguas Calientes (it is not included in the price of the tour; one way costs $12) or walk down slowly and take more panoramic pictures of the surrounding nature (recommended)!!  

Once in Aguas Calientes, you can visit one of the many good restaurants, which offer traditional Andean and international cuisine. You can also go to swim to the local thermal baths (entrance fee is 10 Soles and it is not included in the tour price).  
  
In the afternoon, we will return by train to **Ollantaytambo** from where we are taken back to **Cuzco**.

An alternative route to get to Machu Pichhu in 4 days: the Lares Trail. Adner, a local guide who knows the region, will take you among the Andean highlands.

### I am happy to lead this incredible adventure in Perú: Machu Picchu by the Inca Trail.

It’s probably the most famous trek in all South America. I think Machu Picchu represents the best way to learn the history behind the Inca People. In addition, I have no doubt that **the Inca Trail is the most incredible hiking route** to reach the Machu Picchu citadel.

This trail goes across amazing Andean mountain passes and several Inca ruins. Of course always with the stunning snowy peaks of the Andes as a backdrop.

**The total length of the Inca Trail is 82 kilometers** and goes from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes. The first day we’ll get to Huayllabamba. The second we’ll reach Pacamay. Then we will walk up to Huayn and Machu Picchu comes on the fourth day of adventure. The complete day-by-day itinerary is at the end of this description. 

The highlight will be at dawn when we wake up at 3 am and watch the sunrise over the mountains of Machu Picchu. The best period of the year to enjoy the Inca trail is **between May and September**, the driest season.

Remember that the access to the Machu Picchu citadel is limited. No more than 500 visitors per day is allowed. So, I suggest you to contact me with anticipation. That way I can book and buy your ticket without problem.

Early morning, I will pick you up from your hotel and take you by a private transport to the starting point of the **Inca Trail:** Piscacucho, also called Km 82 (at 2,350 m). There, you’ll have a briefing about the **Machu Picchu** program and after that, you’ll cross the checking point of the Classic Inca Trail. Then you’ll hike along the Urubamba River visiting the Willca Raccay and the enormous Llactapata. You then continue up to the _Cusichaca River Canyon_ which offers magnificent views of the Cordillera Oriental and particularly the Veronica Mountain (5,850 m). Lunch in Chamana and continue along the Cusichaca River until reaching the village of Wayllabamba. Thereafter, you start ascending so that in the afternoon, you’ll get to the village of _Llullucha Pampa_, our first campsite (3,850 m). Dinner and rest.

Early after breakfast, you continue hiking uphill towards the highest point of the trail: Abra Warmiwañusqa at 4,200 meters passing through the cloud forests of Yunkachimpa and Corral Punku. From there, you descend to the **Pacaymayo Valley** (3,300 m), where you have a lunch break. Then you continue hiking through the valley to the Inca’s ruins of Runkuracay. Afterwards, you climb up and get over the second pass, Abra Runkurakay (3,860m), walking on this “Royal Inca’s Highway” down to the next Inka site: _Sayacmarca_. On the way, you’ll pass the Yanacocha Lake. In the end, we get to our second campsite Chaquicocha.

Llullucha Pampa - Chaquicocha

Today, we start hiking passing through a subtropical vegetation and other archaeological sites. Before we reach the first site, we get over Phuyupatamarca Pass (3,670 m) and just behind it, we can see the _Phuyupatamarca Inka complex_ (3,600 m), one of the best preserved and most completed sites of the **Inca Trail hike**. The complex is located on the top of a mountain and it corresponds with its Quechuan name that means the “Town above the Clouds”. After a guided tour, we have lunch there. Then, we start a steep descent  in direction to our last campsite at _Wiñay Wayna_ (2,700 m). There, we have a guided tour around. Finally, we will have dinner and go to sleep to get ready for the exciting final **Machu Picchu hike**!!

Chaquicocha - Wiñaywayna

This is the last day of the **Inca Trail** so we get ready early in the morning and after breakfast, we start climbing antique steps to Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) to see the sunrise above the long-expected citadel of Machu Picchu! Then, you will enjoy a guided visit of we call the “Lost City of the Incas”. After that, you have the opportunity to climb either the peak of Huayna Picchu (45 minutes up and the same time back) or Machu Picchu Mountain (1 hour and 30 minutes up and down) on your own to take some panoramic pictures of **Machu Picchu**! This trek finishes by an afternoon’s descent to the town of Aguas Calientes where we take a train back to _Ollantaytambo._ There you will take the tourist bus to **Cuzco**. Arrival in the evening.

Visiting **Machu Pichu** is a dream come true for anybody who loves history, and beauty. And while the famed **Incan trail** brings people from around the world. I would like to guide you to the ruins along the less known, but equally amazing **Salkantay trek**.

This **4 day journey** will take you from the city of **Cuzco** to the ruins of **Machu Pichu** and back. And along the way, you will see an abundance of unforgettable and spectacular highlights.

This **hiking trek** involves a lot of walking, so you should be in **good physical condition**. However, it is not too demanding where only the most physically fit can participate. Hence making it quite accessible.

Today we will hike through the jungle, passing the Lluscamayo river until we reach the settlement of Lluscamayo, where we will have lunch. We will then hike for another 3 hours to La Playa, where we will spend the night in a campsite.

Today we will hike to the Llactapata ruins. Afterwards, we will descend 913 metres down to the hydroelectric plant and then we will hike to Aguascalientes, where we will spend the night in a comfortable hotel.

On the final day, we will go to Machu Pichu, where you will get plenty of time to explore and enjoy the famed ruins. Afterwards, we will return to Aguascalientes and take the train to Cusco.

Machu Pichu, Salkantay, 4 Day Guided Trek

The **Apu Ausangate** is the most important sacred mountain in the surroundings of Cuzco. It has a very special meaning for the Inca people and Peruvian culture in general.  

The Ausangate trek I am proposing today **involves a hard physical effort** since it is high altitude hike. During this week, we will cross over a 5000-meter pass and set up our tents in campsites at 4300 meters of altitude. 

This hike will offer us beautiful landscapes surrounded by incredible glaciers. We will go along lagoons in the company of the Andean camelids.

Regarding the climate it is a little cold with nights under 5°C and days with temperatures around 20°C. There will be also cold winds during most part of the day. But **once you contact me I can give you more details** about the necessary equipment you’ll need to cope with the weather.

At the end of this description, in the Itinerary Section, you can find more details of the day-by-day program. Our starting point will be in Cuzco.

We board a private vehicle early in the morning (around 5 am) to travel to the Andean village of Tinki. First, we follow a road towards Puno passing the Wari´s culture ruins of Pikillaqta and later the colonial towns of Andahuaylillas and Huaro. Then, we continue to the village of Urcos, where we stop for a while to appreciate a colorful local market. Afterwards, we turn on a dusty road (that leads to Puerto Maldonado) to continue uphill until we reach some highland small villages observing shepherds and weavers there. In the afternoon, we continue towards Ocongate, a capital of the district, passing some picturesque villages along the Huatanay River and beautiful areas of cultivated fields. Finally, we get to our first campsite at Tinki (3,850 m) completing a 145 kilometer ride.

Our today´s trail starts crossing the “puna” approaching the foothill of the impressive sacred Ausangate Mountain, which offers amazing views of a rolling landscape. Below, we can view some llamas, alpacas, vicuñas and paqochas (Andean cameloids). Continuing the hike, the trail take us up passing some Andean villages where we can still see many traditional customs. Later on, we reach a small village of Upis (4,140 m), from where we can enjoy stunning views of the Apu Ausangate (6,372 m). Afterwards, we walk to the nearby hot springs where we set a campsite and obviously enjoy a dip in thermal waters!!

After an early breakfast, we ascend for two and half an hour towards the high Arapa Pass (4,850 m). From there, we start descending to the Pucaqocha Lagoon, also called Hatun Pucaqocha, enjoying splendid views of the western icefall of Ausangate. Then, we set a campsite on the shores of the lagoon where we have a chance to watch many Andean birds.

Hot Springs - Pucaqocha Lagoon

After breakfast, we first ascend to the Alcatani Pass (4,650 m) to later descend to the glacier lagoon of Ausangateqocha. Afterwards, we climb up again, this time to reach the highest point of the entire Ausangate Trek which is the Palomani Pass (5,050 m). There, we can enjoy magnificent views of the southeastern ridge of the Apu Ausangate! Finally, we climb down to the Jampa Valley (4,600 m) admiring Andean dwellers wearing typical cloths of this region as well as plenty of sheep, llamas, alpacas and paqochas before we get to a place of our today´s camping night within the valley.

Palomani Pass - Jampa Valley

Today, we circle northwest along the Ticllacocha Lagoon and over the last pass of Jampa (4,650 m). From there, we continue hiking to the Pacchaspata Pampa where we set up a campsite on the shores of the splendid turquoise lagoon of Q’omercocha (4,580 m).

After having breakfast, we start descending towards the small village of Pacchanta (4,300 m) observing spectacular highland sceneries on the way. When we reach Pachanta, we continue to its hot springs to enjoy a dip. From there, we have an opportunity to view the powerful Apu Ausangate. Overnight camp here.

Qomercocha Lagoon - Pacchanta

A short hike awaits us today to take us back to Tinki (3,850 m) where we the transfer will bring us back to Cuzco. You get to your hotel by late afternoon.

### **If you come to Peru you cannot miss this full day hiking tour in the Rainbow Mountain!** 

The **Rainbow Mountain**, also known as the **Ausangate**, is the 5th highest peak of Peru. It’s located on the Pitumarca district in the region of Cuzco. The Rainbow Mountain was included by National Geographic in the list of **the 100 places you should go before die**.

On the way to the Rainbow Mountain you will delight your eyes with really beautiful landscapes. In addition, you will learn a lot about native flora and fauna of the place as well as local villagers. 

As for the itinerary, I will pick you up early from your hotel in Cuzco. Then, we will drive through the South Valley to **Quesiuno, where the trek starts**. Once we are in the Inkintuyoc Bridge, we’ll enjoy a delicious continental breakfast to gain strength.

We then start the hike along a nice stream. On the way you will have amazing views of the surrounding peaks. We will walk through local villages to know the lifestyle of their people. We will then stop for a lunch before continuing with the last part of the trail.

Finally, after about 5 walking hours, we will reach our destination: the incredible **5020-meter Rainbow Mountain**. Once at the summit, you will have spare time to explore the area and take pictures.

Now, it’s time to return. We will hike downhill by the same route we ascended. This hike will take other 4 or 5 hours. Once in the base, our private transfer will be waiting for us. Back to your hotel in Cuzco at around 9 PM. End of this fantastic trekking day!

There are many ways to get to the same place. That is the case of Machu Picchu and its several hiking trails built by the Incas in the past. **Salkantay is one of those alternatives**. Furthermore, it's a perfect option for those who love nature and the off the beaten tracks.

This 5-day trek across the Salkantay route towards Machu Picchu is a challenge full of spirituality and natural beauty. As you may know, the Salkantay is one of the traditional sacred mountains of the Vilcabamba. It lies in the south of Machu Picchu with 6271 meters of altitude. During Incas times, this mountain served as reference for the cardinal astrological observations.

This guided tour I am proposing is the best alternative to the famous Inca Trail. We will get up at 5 AM and leave **Cusco** by bus in direction to to the _Mollepata village_. We’ll stop for 45 minutes and have breakfast in a restaurant if the group wants (not included). Then we’ll continue our ride uphill for 1 more hour until we reach Challacancha (the trailhead). 

There we will meet our support staff, who will pack the equipment on the horses and mules. We need to have 2 backpacks. One with your personal gear (5 kg max.) that will go on the horses. The other will be a daypack with just the necessary things and will be carried by you.

From there we will hike for about 4 hours to _Soraypampa._ Finally, we will reach our campsite, where we have lunch. After lunch we will climb the Humantay Mountain to visit the Humantay Lake and we then descend back to camp at Soraypampa. Overnight stay there.

Cusco - Mollepata - Challacancha - Soraypampa

An early start after a good breakfast. Today will be the longest and most difficult day. The hike is moderate at first till we get to Soyrococha. Then, we must hike uphill for 3 more hours in direction to a high pass at 4,800 m, very close to the wonderful peaks of **Salkantay** (6,271 m) and Humantay (6,100 m).

Here we will enjoy the stunning scenery and descend for 1 hour to Wayracmachay (3,800 m) where we will have lunch and a rest. Then, we’ll walk 3 hours to our campsite in Collpapampa.

Soraypampa - Salkantay Mountain – Collpapampa

Another early start after breakfast. On this part of the hike we walk on a narrow trail, discovering various types of orchids and plants. We will also get the chance to pass a waterfall on the path.

After walking for 5 hours we will reach La Playa. From here we have 2 options:

*   Santa Teresa: we will take a bus to Santa Teresa town. That will take about 45 minutes. Upon arrival we’ll set up camp and have the opportunity to go to the hot springs nearby (Optional). In the evening we’ll have dinner and rest at camp.
    
*   Llactapata ruins: if you want to see the **Llactapata ruins**, we must walk 2 hours to Aobamba, where we will camp for the night.

Collpapampa - La Playa

If you chose to go via the Llactapata ruins, you’ll start the day with a 4 hour hike to the ruins (2,860 m) from where we can see both Machu Picchu and Salkantay Mountains! After a tour around the ruins, we’ll start descending for about 4 hours to Aobamba River. That trail brings us to the Hydroelectric Plant (Hidroelectrica, in Spanish), a place where we’ll have lunch and then continue along the trail to our hotel in Aguas Calientes town!

If you chose the Santa Teresa option, we will have breakfast and after a short bus trip (1 hour) we will hike for about 2 hours, crossing the _Urubamba River_ and onward to the Hydro Electric Station, where we have lunch nearby. We will then continue to the town of Aguas Calientes crossing the bottom of the valley for about 3 hours along the train tracks until reaching the town. Once there we will spend the night in a hostal. We will have dinner and rest for our next big day in **Machu Picchu**.

La Playa - Llactapata - Hidroelectrica - Aguas Calientes

An early start to continue hiking to Machu Picchu and see the sunrise over this glorious old city! We will walk for about 2 hours to the ruins of Machu Picchu and have a full guided tour that takes about 2 hours.

Afterwards you can take the bus to Aguas Calientes. You can have lunch there too (not included in the cost). In the afternoon, we will return by train to Ollantaytambo and transfer to Cusco.
