I started climbing and mountaineering in 1990, and I’ve been doing it for more than 25 years. During those years I climbed in most climbing routes in Brazil, and opened some of the largest routes in the country.

Additionally, I wrote and published 2 climbing books "Dividir and Conquistar" (To Share and To Conquer, 2000) and "Manual de abertura de vias" (Route Opening Manual, 2013). And I also wrote articles for several media and websites.

I’m Industrial Rope Access supervisor and is a certified rescuer in height and confined spaces.

In this **3 days mountaineering program** we’ll climb **two peaks in Itatiaia National Park: Agulhas Negras and Prateleiras**. Agulhas Negras has 2787 metres, and is one of the highest peaks in Brazil.

Itatiaia is an ideal place for hiking, rock climbing and those getting started in mountaineering, and the landscapes are very beautiful. It was **the first national park in the country**, and it is easily accessible from the main cities in the central-east region: Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

For this program a basic trekking experience is required. Other from that, just the will to enjoy, learn and have fun! All the guides know very well the region, and have been going to Itaitiaia for more than 20 years. And this program can be done all year round.

**Itinerary:**

**Day 1 – Travel to Itamonte**

The meeting point is in Itamonte, the closest city to the park. We’ll spend the night in a mountain hostel located just 5 km to the entrance to Itaitaia.

**Day 2 – Climbing Agulhas Negras – 2787m**

After breakfast we go to the starting point of the trek, Rebouças refuge at 2500. The first part is an easy walk for an hour, but after that we have 4 hours of rock scramble and some technical climbs (some of them quite exposed). We will have all the necessary technical equipment. After the summit we go down rappelling, and hike back to Reboucas. Transport back to the hostel.

**Day 3 – Climb to Prateleiras – 2630m**

We drive back again to Reboucas, in Itaitiaia highlands. From there we start walking towards Prateleiras, a huge rock massif. The hike is shorter than the one to Agulhas Negras, but the ascent more exposed. We then go down and back to the hostel for a snack and shower. From there we drive to Itamonte, where the trip ends.

Climbing in Itatiaia National Park

The **traverse between Petropolis and Teresopolis** is a famous hike in the area of **Rio de Janeiro**. Discover this challenging hike in Brazil! The hike goes through **Serra dos Órgãos**, which is a mountain range in Serra do Mar.

You will be amazed by the pointy summits and sheer faces of Serra dos Órgãos. One of the most famous mountains in Brazil is here: **Dedo de Deus**. The name means God’s finger since it looks like a fist with one finger pointing up.

For this hike, you need to have some **basic hiking experience** and be in **good physical shape**. Please note that you will have to carry part of the group equipment (tent, food) in addition to your personal belongings.

Leaving at 8 am, car transfer until the start of the trail. Firstly we cross a dense forest. Then we reach altitude vegetation and get to see the sky above us. This day is quite short, although not light since it includes some steep climbing. We reach the Castelos do Açu camp in the afternoon, where we have dinner and spend the night.

Petropolis – Castelos do Açú (7 km)

Early breakfast and camp disassembling. The most challenging section of the hike awaits: a short via ferrata climb. During the day we will go through 6 different peaks. We will enjoy the sunset on the Pedra do Sino summit, with beautiful views. Overnight in its base camp.

Castelos do Açú – Pedra do Sino (11 km)

Early rise, before sunrise! We descend through the rainforest to the NP control. Transfer to Teresopolis and end of the trip.

Pedra do Sino – Teresopolis (12 km)

This rock climbing course in **Rio de Janeiro** is perfect if you are traveling to Rio, either for work or holiday.

The course consists of 8 classes, during which you will learn theory and practice. On average each class lasts 2-3 hours. But depending on your schedule, we can either split or merge them.

Beautiful Rio has great climbing locations. Classes will be at some of them: **Morro da Urca**, **Babilônia** and also **Cantagalo**.

The goal is to teach you the basic climbing techniques so that you can climb on routes with fixed protection safely and independently. We will also cover climbing history, ethics, leading techniques, rappelling and safety procedures.

During the course you will learn:  
– Introduction to rock climbing equipment  
– Introduction to climbing knots  
– Rock climbing concepts

I propose the following 8 lessons, that can be split or merged.

**Lesson 1**: **Grade 3 50 metre climb (2 hs)**  
– How to use equipment, taking care of climbing material, strength  
– Knots (figure of eight, threaded figure of eight, overhand knot)  
– Belaying a leader  
– Climbing techniques (use of climbing holds, positioning, feet placement)

**Lesson 2:  Grade 3-IV 60 metre climb (2 hs)**  
– Climbing techniques (1s part)  
– Knots (Fisherman, Prussik, Machard)  
– Rappel techniques

**Lesson 3: Grade 3-IV 20 metre climb (2 hs)**  
– Knots (tape knot, Italian hitch, clove hitch)  
– Abseiling without devices (Italian hitch and Yosemite techniques)  
– Climbing technique (grip)  
– Ascending fixed rope

**Lesson 4: Grade 3 100 metre climb (3 hs)**  
– Knots review  
– Rock protections (use and resistance)  
– Climbing technique (chimney)

**Lesson 5: Grade 3-lV 120 metre climb (3 hs)**  
– Knots review  
– Mountain hazards  
– Climbing technique (cracks)

**Lesson 6: Grade 4 120 metre climb (3 hs)**  
– Belay stations (basic assembly)

The **Pão de Açúcar**, in **Rio de Janeiro**, is well known around the world. The meaning of this iconic mountain’s name is Sugaloaf. There are many different routes to climb it, so let’s take one of them together!

If you have some basic rock climbing skills and want to have some fun while in Rio, this program is for you. I can create the ideal program to suit your wishes. Choose between single or multi-pitch routes. It can be either an easy or a challenging day, depending on your skills. I like to take clients on a short trial climb to then decide the chosen route.

The following are some of my favourite routes:  
– **Via dos Italianos (Italian’s route):** 5º V+ 260m. It’s a classic route, requiring basic/intermediate skills.  
– **Chaminé Stop (Stop chimney):** 4 IV + 240m. It requires basic skills, it’s the route of the original first ascent of Pão de Açúcar.

In southeastern **Brazil**, the **Serra do Mar** mountain range is a fantastic destination for rock climbing. In particular, **Salinas**, the highest point of the range (2320m) offers some great routes. Salinas has three main summits: Pico Maior (Higher Peak), Pico Médio (Medium Peak) and Capacete (Helmet).

The climbing routes in Salinas are very committing. Some of them are higher than 1000m! Also, they have their own style of protection. From here you will discover some of the most impressive views in Brazil. The very prominent peaks are a unique scenario for long sports and trad climbing.

We can easily reach the Salinas massif from different cities. In this case, we will leave from Rio.

We can take for example one of these routes:  
– **Via Leste**: 4° V (6+/A0) 700m, the longest and most classic route to the summit (10 hs)  
– **No Mundo da Lua**: 5° V+ E3 400m (5-6 hs)  
– **CERJ**: 5° A0 400m – R$ 500m (6-8 hs)  
– **Sólidas Ilusões**: 4°-V E3 500m (6-8 hs)  
– **Roberta Groba**: 5°-VI 500m (6-8 hs)  
– **El Cabong**: 5°-Vl E2 500m (6-8 hs)

I propose to you the following 2-day itinerary.

**Day 1: Rio – Salinas**  
We meet, check the equipment, then buy some food and drive to the mountain!

**Day 2: Climbing at Pico Maior or Capacete**  
Early morning! We leave before sunrise to get to the base of the rock with the first lights. A fun and intense climbing day awaits in our chosen route. At the end of the day, drive back to Rio.
