Located in the Northern Andes, the Cordillera Blanca of Peru is one the world’s foremost mountaineering arenas. The breathtaking pyramids of snow and ice that make up ‘The Blanca,’ as it’s respectfully referred to, soar up to 22,200′ and contain more than 30 peaks over 18,000′ tall. Due to the fact that these grandiose mountains are so easy to access, our expeditions to this region enjoy more time climbing in the alpine zone and learning mountaineering skills and less time on the approach to base camp. We will aim to climb Urus (~17,900′), Ishinca (~18,200′) Tocllaraju (~20,000′) and Ranrapalca (~20,000′). The ultimate goal of the expedition will be for students to be leading the summit bids on these glaciated peaks and to learn the skills needed to lead similar expeditions on their own.

Expedition in the Ishinca Valley

Stretching for 260 kilometers through northeastern Utah, the Wasatch Range is the perfect place for an immersive ski mountaineering course!

Designed for intermediate backcountry skiers, this course will teach you the technical skills necessary for making high-consequence ski mountaineering descents.

Starting on the very first day, we will go over avalanche mitigation strategies, practice skiing on steep terrain and go over fundamental mountaineering skills (such as tying knots, setting up hitches and going over all of the devices).

On the second day, we will learn and practice some basic ski mountaineering skills, including anchoring, belaying a skier, managing steep entrances and rappelling.

Our third and final day will be the highlight of the course. Taking place against the backdrop of the stunning mountain scenery and incredible views of the Wasatch Range, we will put our newly acquired skills to the test.

The day will be spent heading out to various different spots and trying some challenging and highly technical ski mountaineering rope work and snowpack assessment.

For anyone getting into the exciting world of ski touring and off-piste skiing, then taking an introductory avalanche safety course is a must.

Our Avalanche Level 1 course – set in the beautiful backdrop of the Wasatch Mountains – exceeds the guidelines set by the American Avalanche Association and combines classroom learning with in-the-field experience.

Over the course of our time together, we will go over the fundamentals of what avalanches are and why they occur. We will also go over how to access local avalanche bulletins and learn to understand information that they provide as well as learn about avalanche safety gear.

We will also learn basic avalanche rescue techniques and how to identify avalanche-prone terrain too.

Once we are done in the classroom, we will then head out onto the slopes and put some of what we've learned to the test. In the heart of the stunningly scenic Wasatch Range, we will make some key observations about snowpack and weather; practice the appropriate snowpack tests; and choose terrain on which to ski that is appropriate for current avalanche conditions.

We will also put some of the basic rescue and avalanche avoidance techniques that we learned in the classroom to the test.

By the time you finish this avalanche safety course, you will have a basic understanding and awareness of how to avoid and prepare yourself in case of an avalanche and will be ready to go on and take more advanced courses.
