I’m based in Bilbao, in the Basque country. This region has plenty of possibilities for mountain programs, which are not so popular, and I really like to guide people in the area.

And I also work a lot in the Pyrenees, which are just a 3-hour drive from Bilbao.

For me, to guide is to share an experience and a moment in the mountain.

The mountain is a place where to live and feel experiences that are hard to explain, but is also important to understand it: without a solid knowledge it is complicated to remain safe in a mountain environment. A guide won’t guarantee total safety, but is there to identify and manage risks.

The way I see it, a famous peak hides several unnamed peaks, which are probably more remote, less visited, but equally beautiful. So it’s important to know why is it that we go to the mountains.

The **Basque Country or Euskadi** is a Spanish autonomous community, located in the northeastern end of the Cantabrian fringe. It borders the Biscay Bay and France to the north, La Rioja to the south, Cantabria and Burgos to the west and to the east, Navarre.

The Basque Country is a country of mountains. A place where the mountains are part of the landscape, surrounding its main cities: **Bilbao, San Sebastian and Vitoria**. Here, you don’t need to go looking for the mountains since they’re very close to the urban life.

The summits of the Basque Country’s mountains barely exceed 1,000 meters in height. However, they offer green corners of incomparable beauty.

During this **6-day trip** you’ll find endless beech forests and meadows. And, most importantly, you will also **enjoy the best mountain routes almost touching the coast**. As you can see, the Basque Country offers a wide variety of options. Furthermore, they can be combined perfectly with the historical, cultural and gastronomic wealth of the region.

Basque Country 6-day guided mountaineering trip

**The Basque Country and Navarra, in the Spanish north,** have a really high quality rock and a wide variety of sport climbing options surrounded by the most stunning landscape.

Actually, three of the most important climbers in the world are from the Basque Country. **Iker Pou** was the third world climber to achieve a 9a-difficulty target in the region. **Josune Bereziartua** was the first woman to climb a 9a-route here. **Patxi Usobiaga** was also proclaimed world champion in high difficulty rock climbing.

That is why I have planned this **7-day trip** around the main sport climbing schools that the Basque Country and Navarra offer. Among them, we can visit:

My idea is to take you to the best climbing sites so that you have the freedom to choose the most suitable option for you. It will also depend on weather conditions and the season. However, most of the climbing routes in the Basque Country and Navarra are available all year round.

Regarding the itinerary, on day 1 we will have a welcome and introductory meeting in **Bilbao**. Then, we will go to **Atxarte** to enjoy our first approach to rock climbing.

From days 2 to 7, we will enjoy many other tours in the best limestone spots. We can climb them according to the group's wishes and preferences. I'll lead a group of **a maximum of 8 participants**.

Basque Country and Navarra 7-day sport climbing tour

The **Basque Country** is an autonomous community in northern Spain that comprises the provinces of Alava, Guipuzcoa, and Vizcaya. The region is surrounded by the Bay of Biscay to the north, the autonomous community of Navarra to the east, the province of La Rioja to the south, and Cantabria and Burgos to the west.

The Basque Country’s main cities (Bilbao, San Sebastian and Vitoria-Gasteiz) are enclosed by the beautiful **Basque Mountains**, considered the eastern section of the larger **Cantabrian Range** (2,648m), which stretches over 300 kilometers across northern Spain, parallel to the Cantabrian Sea. Although the Basque Mountains’ peaks are not particularly high – the **Aizkorri** massif, its highest summit, stands at 1,551 meters –, they offer stunning green, rugged landscapes. Its limestone and granite elevations, vast forests, rivers and waterfalls make the Basque Mountains a perfect climbing area.

I usually suggest a climbing site near the city of **Bilbao**, in the province of Vizcaya, for this outing. However, there are several great climbing areas around, so we can choose the most convenient location for the whole group.

Based on participants’ preferences and previous climbing experience, **we can do a traditional climbing outing, or a single- or multi-pitch sport climbing tour**. We can even extend it for over a day. During the excursion, I will explain basic climbing techniques and the proper use of equipment, as well as provide guests with key safety guidelines.

Rock climbing day in the Basque Country

This **one-week summer program in the Pyrenees** is one of the most beautiful trekking circuits in the region. It will be an unforgettable trip between **France and Spain**, under the gaze of **Monte Perdido** and **Vignemale**.

In addition, this program implies a high altitude trek. Keep in mind that in 6 days **we will walk 90 kms**! Our breaks and nights will be in the most famous mountain lodges of the Pyrenees. Among them, the **Oulettes de Gaube**, **Góriz** and the **Bujaruelo** Hut. This one also has amazing surrounding green meadows.

Another highlight of our itinerary will be the **Gavarnie Circus**. As you may know, it is one of the most aesthetic mountain postcards in the Pyrenees.
