I'm alpinist, nature and a lover of my home, el Valle de Liébana. I work as a local guide in Picos de Europa National Park, the first National Park of Spain. I do organize adventure trips and several-day expeditions combining hiking and climbings. After ten years working in these lands as a guide, I set out my own mountain guide service company, Liébana Aventura. I try to keep a close relationship with my clients and share my knowledge, love and respect for this very rugged and at the same time beautiful environment. My certifications are: Sports technician II in mountain, climbing and cannyoning / Member of the Spanish Association of Mountain Guides No. 1107.

1-day Via ferrata Camaleño in the Picos de Europa

If you are looking for an **easy rock climbing experience** in the **Picos de Europa mountain range**, I invite you to join me on this rock climbing day tour in the Aguja de la Canalona (Canalona Needle), in the **Cantabria** province in northern Spain.

The **Aguja de la Canalona (2519m)** is situated in the Picos de Europa central Massif, on the way up to the Peña Vieja peak. It is an easy and short climb  by the normal route, consisting of a wall of about 11o meters, offering **great panoramic views from the summit**.

It is one of the most popular climbs of the Picos de Europa, due to its amazing summit and stunning views and its **low level of difficulty (maximum grade IV).** The approximation takes about 2 hours.  

The Aguja de la Canalona is usually recommended to mountain enthusiasts looking to venture themselves into alpine climbing.  The route was opened in 1948 by José A. Odriozola and Alfonso Alonso, together with Alfonso and Juan Tomás Martínez, guides of Cabrales at that time.

This climb is graded as Basic Level, this means in order to join this trip **you need to be used to mountain routes of 4 to 6 hours**, with a positive altitude difference of 800 meters. But most important, you need to have a positive attitude and motivation!

### **Naranjo de Bulnes (2,519 m)**, or **Picu Urriellu** is the most representative mountain in the **Picos de Europa**, mountain range.

This **colossal limestone peak** is located in the **Central Massif**, in **Asturias, Spain**. Join me on this guided ascent via the **South Face**. Due to the location of this route, it is a fairly **straight ascent**. Hence it is the **easiest, fastest and most accessible route** to the top of **Picu**. Also, there are rappelling areas available in both sides of the normal route.

The itinerary I recommend departs from the refuge, taking the road that leads us to the **Celada Canal**, just under the **North Face of Naranjo de Bulnes**. Thereupon, the trekking ahead is pretty relaxed until the bivouac shelters’ area at the **South Face**. Then we’ll put on a helmet and start climbing through a series of steps following our route, with five different sections.

The first one is short but with a **Vº pass** at the initial part. Then, the second section begins with an **easy path**, followed by a **straight road** that will lead us to the third section. After completing the third part, culminating in a area with **parabolts and a chain**, we’ll begin the fourth section of our ascent, with **holes, fairways and a IV+ pass**. Finally we’ll reach the fifth and last section of about **40 meters**.

And once we reach the summit of **Naranjo de Bulnes**, we will get the absolutely most mesmerizing views of **Picos de Europa**.

### **An absolutely gorgeous and legendary mountain range, the Picos de Europa are home to some of the best rock climbing spots not just in Spain, but in all of Europe.**

Located in the **Cantabrian Mountains, the Picos de Europa** offer some amazing views and a long list of spectacular rock climbing routes. And, during this **level 1 climbing trip**, you will get to choose from several of the best routes in the range. Furthermore, this trip can last for one or more days. Some of the routes you can choose from include the following.

*   _Needle Ostaikoetxea – Udaondo Urones – IV, 150 meter length_
    
*   _Divertimento and Alfonosada Route – V+, 280 meter length_
    
*   _Torresalinas – Via Cassiopea – V+, 380 meter length plus 120 meter crest edge_
    

All of the routes are unique in the views they offer as well as the experience they provide. They also take varying times to complete, from **1 hour to 7 hours**. As a result of the diversity of the routes, we will pick the best ones for you based on your skill level and personal preference.

It is important that participants on this trip are in **good physical condition**.

Participants on this trip should have prior experience climbing walls of at least a **sixth grade**, with a vertical drop of up to **1000 meters in length**. You should also have **experience climbing for at least 8 hours**, and be in **good physical condition**.
