Description

How many of us are able to place the Balkan countries on a map on the first try without mistakes? Not many, no doubt!  And how many of us would think of these countries as a ski touring destination? Still a lot less, for sure.

Yet, I will take you to the mountains between Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania. This territory is still wild and unexplored for skiing, untouched by any tourist development in winter.

In February 2016, I went to explore the valleys in Kosovo and Macedonia. As if we were sheep, we jumped across the border till we discovered a great village-to-village ski tour. There are no hostels or shelters here: accommodation is arranged directly with the local people in small hamlets nestled in the heart of the mountains.

Once again, in February 2018, we will have to find the passages between the valleys, the passes and the summits. Forecast: great moments of exploration ahead.

The Sharr Mountains are intertwined between Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania. The most spectacular of them is a prolonged peak-to-peak ridge line between Kosovo and Albania, where Mount Korab´s summit, 2,756 meters high –the highest in the massif– awaits us at the end of the journey. The summit also marks the border between Albania and Macedonia, and is surrounded by an excellent skiing area.

We will sleep in a combination of mountain hotels, local mountain houses and one night in a hotel in Pristina, Kosovo’s capital.

This week-long trip requires a good skiing and fitness level, as most of the summits are over 3,500 meters. We will be climbing between 800 and 1,500 meters a day. But the massif is vast and it will always be possible to ski an extra slope! It is easy to do 2,500 meters more.

Do you want to be a part of this off-road adventure? Then I invite you to contact me and book your spot.

In Pristina: hotel. During the ski tour: at local houses and farms. Meals prepared by local people.

About the guide

guide profile img

I have been a mountain guide since I was 25 years old. My passion for discovering the mountains of the world has led me to the four corners of the earth. Currently, I am also an instructor at the National School of Skiing and Mountaineering (ENSA).

Each year, I organize different trips. I'm in charge of each trip's organization and I'm sometimes also the guide who leads the group. It could either be me or one of my 4 guide friends, who I have been working with for years.

I have been organizing trips around the world for the past 26 years: Alaska, Antractica, Nepal, Mongolia...Over the years, I have organized trips in more than 30 countries.

In recent years I have had the opportunity to discover:
- Ski traverse in Greenland
- Ski touring in Iran, Lebanon, Mongolia, Argentina, Canada
- Climbing in the Yukon at the Lotus Flower, Jordan, Oman
- The high summits of Sichuan, Kula Kangri in Tibet, Langtang Ri in Nepal

I am currently based in Chamonix and the other 3 guides who work with me live nearby as well. If you are interested in traveling far away or discovering the Mont Blanc massif and other places in the Alps, for climbing, ski touring or ice climbing, please contact me. It will be a pleasure for me to organise a trip that meets your expectations.
