Description

Set in Los Glaciares National Park, El Chaltén is Argentina’s alpine capital and a dream destination for adventurous ski tourers. With the granite towers of Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre rising above glaciers, lenga forests and remote valleys, every day delivers a new dose of classic Patagonian scenery.

The region may be famous for climbing, but winter reveals another side of the mountains. Depending on conditions, you could explore Loma del Diablo, Mosquito Valley, Cerro Vespignani, Cerro Creston, Cerro Eléctrico or Cerro Madsen, with memorable descents and incredible views of the Fitz Roy Massif.

This is not a relaxed ski holiday. It is a full-on adventure for expert ski tourers with strong fitness and solid mountain experience. Expect long approaches, big elevation gains, remote terrain and plenty of time on your feet. On many days, you will carry your skis for at least an hour before reaching the snow.

The itinerary balances the bigger objectives with lighter ski days and recovery time, so you can enjoy the challenge without missing the magic of being deep in the Patagonian mountains.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in El Chaltén

Travel to El Chaltén, located beneath Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre in Los Glaciares National Park.

The most convenient option is to fly to El Calafate Airport and continue by bus to El Chaltén. Upon arrival, meet the guide at the hotel for a complete equipment check and itinerary briefing.

Accommodation: Hotel in El Chaltén

Day 2: Loma del Diablo and Mosquito Valley

Begin with a warm-up tour in Mosquito Valley, one of the region’s most accessible and scenic ski touring areas.

After a 30-minute drive from El Chaltén, carry your skis for approximately one hour before beginning the ascent. The climb to Loma del Diablo involves around 1,200 meters of elevation gain.

The mountain features a broad cirque with terrain facing several directions, including open slopes and northeast-facing couloirs. Depending on conditions, it may also be possible to explore nearby valleys.

From the upper slopes, enjoy views of Cerro Neumeyer, Gorra Blanca, Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre.

Elevation gain: Approximately 1,200 m Accommodation: Hotel in El Chaltén

Day 3: Cerro Vespignani

Travel approximately 40 kilometers north of El Chaltén toward Lago del Desierto and Cerro Vespignani, close to the Chilean border.

The approach crosses private land and follows a beautiful trail through lenga forest to Laguna Los Huemules. The hike takes approximately 45 minutes from the parking area. From the lake, continue over glacial moraine until reaching the snowline.

The ascent then enters heavily glaciated alpine terrain. Cerro Vespignani features a large open bowl with sustained slopes of approximately 30–35 degrees. Glacier travel and careful route-finding around crevasses are required.

The mountain often retains snow late into the season and may be skiable from June through December, depending on conditions.

Elevation gain: Approximately 1,600 m Accommodation: Hotel in El Chaltén

Day 4: Approach to Laguna de los Tres

Enjoy a slower morning following the previous demanding ski days.

After breakfast, prepare the camping equipment and begin the approach toward Laguna de los Tres and the Fitz Roy Massif. The objective is to camp close to the snowline or at a suitable protected location below it.

This is primarily an approach and recovery day, with time to appreciate the surrounding granite towers, glaciers and alpine scenery.

Possible views include Aguja de la S, Saint-Exupéry, Rafael Juárez, Poincenot, Fitz Roy, Val de Bois, Mermoz, Guillaumet, Glaciar de los Tres and Glaciar Superior.

Accommodation: Mountain tents

Day 5: Cerro Madsen and Fitz Roy Ski Terrain

Start early and climb the south-facing slopes of Cerro Madsen.

Several ski options may be available, including open faces and couloirs. The mountain frequently preserves good-quality snow and offers some of the finest close-up views of Fitz Roy and its surrounding granite towers.

Depending on conditions, alternative objectives may include Paso Superior, Paso Inferior and Glaciar de los Tres.

After skiing, pack the camping equipment and return on foot to El Chaltén for a well-earned meal and evening in town.

Accommodation: Hotel in El Chaltén

Day 6: Approach to the Creston Valley Yurt

Begin with a relaxed morning and breakfast in El Chaltén.

Later, approach the backcountry yurt in Creston Valley. The journey normally takes approximately two hours. Depending on energy levels and conditions, complete a short afternoon ski tour after arriving.

Accommodation: Backcountry yurt

Day 7: Ski Touring from the Creston Valley Yurt

Depart directly from the yurt for a comparatively moderate ski touring day.

Explore secondary ridges, broad slopes and false summits around Creston Valley. The area provides varied terrain and excellent panoramic views across the surrounding Patagonian mountains.

Return to El Chaltén at the end of the day.

Accommodation: Hotel in El Chaltén

Day 8: Departure

Transfer by bus from El Chaltén to El Calafate Airport for the onward flight to Buenos Aires.

The program ends after eight days of remote ski touring, glaciated ascents and unforgettable views of the Fitz Roy Massif.

What people are saying about Andescross

I can't say enough good things about AndesCross and my recent 7 day backcountry hut tour. Trip of a life time in all aspects. We skied incredible terrain, experienced the local culture and had an amazing time as a group. Everyone had the opportunity to achieve bigger ski objectives while staying safe. Jorge made sure everyone in our group had a great experience, both while skiing and while in Bariloche. None of the pictures do justice. Everything was perfect. I've done a number of similar trips in the US and Canada and would rank this at the very top of my list.

This was my first experience of a backcountry and Patagonian skiing and it could not have been a more rewarding experience. Unbelievable scenery, fantastic skiing and great fun. Jorge is the consummate host, able to combine a group of mixed ability fitness and experience without ever compromising on the level of challenge: guide, teacher, asador, guitar master and now friend, I cannot recommend Andescross highly enough

I had a great time in Bariloche and went with Andescross to climb in Frey and also ascend Cerro Tronador along with a friend I was travelling with. Jorge is awesome and made the whole experience enjoyable. His love of this beautiful area comes across and he was very accommodating with us, working around the weather (it snowed one night at Frey) and maximizing the amount and quality of climbing we did. He also took us to Cerro Lopez to get one last climb in since we had minimal good weather up at Frey. Jorge is a great guide and I was very comfortable climbing with him. After a couple day's rest we ascended Cerro Tronador with Nahuel. It is a great glacier climb with a spicy finish. A pretty demanding ascent and descent, but well worth the view from Pico Argentina. I would definitely go climbing with Jorge and Andescross again and hope to soon!

Jorge was a phenomenal mountain guide. He put us in some great snow and kept everyone safe. He is personally a great guy and went out of his way to make sure everyone had a great time. I'm always happy to serve as a reference for anyone considering a trip with Andescross. Spent two days in Baguales. Snow as incredible and the food was tier I. A truly unique, top tier experience. Hundreds of acres of private ski land in the Andes provided a unique, isolated touring experience. Spent four days at Frey Hut. Jorge knew all the tips and tricks to make the stay very enjoyable. We toured up to a few peaks every day. Made lots of friends from all walks of life. I would do this trip again in a heartbeat, and hopefully take more time to do a few volcanoes later in the season. Next on the list - Antarctica or Norway with Andescross!
