Description

Experience a serious high-altitude guided mountaineering trip on Monte Rosa, featuring an overnight stay at Europe’s highest hut—Capanna Regina Margherita (4,554 m).

Over three days, you’ll ascend from Rifugio Città di Mantova (3,498 m) across stunning glaciers, tackle Punta Gnifetti, and have the chance to summit accessible 4,000-meter peaks of the Lys sector, including Pyramide Vincent. With a 1:3 guide-to-climber ratio, this program balances glacier travel, moderate technique, and extreme altitude. It’s an introductory-progression journey for well-trained mountaineers who can maintain a steady pace on snow and endure long days above 4,000 m.

The core goal is the Margherita overnight; additional summits are rewarding variants based on group ability and conditions. Perfect for climbers seeking a true high-altitude challenge in the Alps’ most iconic setting.

Ready for Margherita? Send us your preferred dates, and we’ll begin planning your adventure!

    Itinerary

Day 1: From Staffal to Mantova Hut – Your Glacier Introduction

Your adventure starts at noon in Staffal, where you'll meet your private guide for a gear check and safety briefing. Then it's up the lifts to Punta Indren—the dramatic gateway to the Monte Rosa glacier. From there, a short but scenic glacier walk brings you to Rifugio Città di Mantova (3,498m).

This gentle approach is perfect for adjusting to altitude, testing your crampons, and getting comfortable moving on a rope team.

Overnight: Rifugio Città di Mantova Included: Dinner

Day 2: Reaching Europe’s Highest Hut – Punta Gnifetti & Margherita

Wake up early for the big one. You'll climb the Lys glacier, passing iconic 4,000m peaks, until you reach Punta Gnifetti and Europe's highest hut—Capanna Regina Margherita.

This is a serious, rewarding day that demands steady pacing and good altitude tolerance. If your group is feeling strong and conditions allow, your guide may add a variant toward the shoulder of Punta Zumstein.

Overnight: Capanna Regina Margherita (4,554m) Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 3: Choose Your Own Summit

This day is all about flexibility. After leaving the hut, your guide will read the weather, snow conditions, and your group's energy levels. Then you'll decide together: a direct descent, or a bonus summit like Vincent or Ludwigshöhe? Very strong groups might even tackle Parrot or Zumstein's shoulder. Either way, you'll return to Punta Indren and ride the lifts back down to Staffal, tired and exhilarated.

    Included: Breakfast

    Accommodation

We will stay at the Rifugio Città di Mantova (3,498 m), a high-altitude refuge on the Monte Rosa glacier and an ideal base for classic ascents like Capanna Margherita and Pyramide Vincent. With spacious common areas, stunning views, and room for up to 120 climbers, it offers a warm alpine atmosphere in one of the Alps’ most iconic settings, reached via a scenic glacier approach.

Equipment you will need to bring

For functional clothing, you'll need a Gore-Tex jacket or other waterproof and breathable jacket, waterproof pants for rain, and a warm jacket (preferably primaloft, as it withstands water). A light fleece and short-sleeved quick-drying shirts are essential, as well as elastic pants for colder days and trekking pants. Bring thermal pants and shirts, along with underwear and spare clothes.

For climbing gear, bring crampons, a climbing harness, three safety carabiners, a 120 cm sling, an ice ax (between 55 and 66 cm), and a climbing helmet. If you don't have your own climbing gear, you can rent it in Chamonix.

For your head, pack a light running cap, wool hat, neck gaiter, and ski mask. Your hands will need thin fleece gloves, leather gloves, and thermal gloves or mittens with high resistance.

For your feet, bring two pairs of merino ski socks (one thin, one thick), light trail shoes or hiking boots, mountaineering boots, and gaiters if your boots don't have integrated ones.

A 30-liter mountain backpack and a small travel bag for your documents and wallet are required. For shelter material, a silk sleeping bag is mandatory, and don't forget earplugs.

In terms of accessories, you'll need a headlamp with spare batteries, sunscreen, lip balm, and after-sun lotion. For food and drink, bring at least a 1-liter water bottle or thermos. If using a Camelbak, bring an auxiliary bottle in case the tube freezes. Pack snacks, energy bars, protein bars, mixed nuts, magnesium tablets, and recovery supplements.

For travel gear, include casual clothes, ID or passport, visa, cash, insurance documents, vaccination card, microfiber towel, first aid kit, and any necessary medications. A thermal blanket, mobile phone with route tracking, watch, power bank, camera, charging cables, earphones, and selfie stick will also be needed.

An incredible experience led by Nuria Picas, who was excellent in her sporting skills and also demonstrated great knowledge of Montblanc.

100% Recommended! A week-long experience with a group of 15 mountain enthusiasts, led by world-renowned expert Nuria Picas, who stands out not only for her professionalism and talent but also for her warmth and personal touch. She fostered a fantastic atmosphere within the group, making all participants feel included. This activity is highly recommended, both for exploring the Tour du Mont Blanc and for preparing for the UTMB race, as well as for disconnecting for a few days, meeting people with similar interests, and learning from others, which is always incredibly enriching. Special mention must be made of the warm and friendly service from the entire b4experience team, who ensured we had everything we needed so we could focus solely on running and enjoying each day.

The best experience of my life. Superbly organized, Núria Picas gets a 10/10, 100% recommended.
