Most hikers who climb Mount Fuji begin their adventure from the 5th station of each trailhead during the climbing season. This ascent is an exciting challenge that follows in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims, who journeyed from sea level to the summit and back down to the base of Mount Fuji over three days.
We'll meet at JR Shinfuji Station and take a cab to Tagonoura Port Park, where we can enjoy a great scenic view of Mount Fuji. From there, we will depart and hike through the Murayama Ancient Trail until we reach MOSS Jurigi Camp Resort.
After having breakfast, we'll hike through the Suyama Ancient Path at the foot of Mount Fuji. We'll then check in at our accommodation, either at Higashi Fuji Sanso at the Subashiri Trail 5th station or at Taiyokan Hut at the Subashiri Trail 7th station.
On the third day we'll reach the summit! Once at the Kengamine, the highest peak in Japan, we'll take a group photo. We'll then begin our descent along the Yoshida Trail to Kigaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, the original trailhead of the Yoshida Trail.
If you're looking for a true challenge and one of the most rewarding hiking experiences you've ever done, then this is the trip for you! Contact me and together we'll conquer the legendary Mount Fuji!

What is the best season for a sea-to-summit ascent of Mount Fuji?
The optimal time for this hike is from the end of September to the beginning of October, as temperatures in lower elevations, including urban areas, begin to drop during this period. It is advisable to avoid July and August due to the increased risk of heat-related health issues. Hydration and nutrition are of paramount importance, particularly in remote areas such as forests, where water sources and food supplies are unavailable. Ensuring an adequate supply of both water and food is essential for the safety and success of the hike.
Where can we stay, and how do you handle transportation between the hiking sections?
We will book a cozy, authentic Japanese-style accommodation called "Kikusui" in Fujinomiya City, located near the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine and Wakutama Pond, for the entire duration of our trip. Kikusui can accommodate large groups and guide while maintaining privacy. After each section of the hike, we will return to the accommodation. A kitchen is available if you prefer to cook your own meals, or you can visit nearby restaurants and shopping malls to purchase food and supplies for the next day. Please note that booking accommodation is the client's responsibility and is not included in our pricing.
Regarding transportation, the guide will arrange taxi for our pick-ups from the accommodation in the morning and for transfers at the end of each section hike. The timing may vary depending on our pace and the trail conditions. Please note that payment for transportation is not included in the pricing.
Can we complete the whole distance within 3 days? I'm not confident with that duration.
Completing the hike in 3 days is indeed challenging and more suitable for advanced hikers. We recommend consulting with your guide to discuss the possibility of extending the trip to 4 days for a more comfortable experience.
What are the attractions of this sea-to-summit hike?
This specialized journey takes you from the sea to the summit of Mount Fuji, offering the unique experience of witnessing the mountain from various perspectives along the way. Mount Fuji has been a sacred site for hundreds of years, and throughout the hike, you’ll discover how the local people regard it as a holy place. The ascent through the moss-covered forest, where few people venture, provides a deeply spiritual experience. Along the way, you may encounter stone statues dedicated by mountain priests, adding to the reverence and serenity of the journey.
We will follow the original path used by ancient climbers of Mount Fuji. After the construction of the road to the 5th station, this path was largely abandoned and is seldom used, making it a rare and special route to experience the mountain’s rich history.
How can we handle the large luggage while climbing the mountain?
Since our itinerary ends on the opposite side of Mount Fuji at the 5th station of the Yoshida trail, please book your hotel in Fujiyoshida city or the Kawaguchiko area for the day we conclude our journey. It is essential to dispatch your luggage from your hotel in Shin-Fuji (southern side of Mount Fuji) ahead of our ascent, a day before our meet-up. Hotel personnel will arrange for your luggage transportation through a courier service called Black Cat (Kuronekoyamato or Yamato Transport). Your luggage will be delivered to your next hotel within one day and can be tracked online. Please arrive with appropriate attire and your backpack for the 3-day sea-to-summit ascent.
What is your role as a hiking guide?
As a hiking guide, my primary responsibility is to ensure your safety, well-being, and enjoyment throughout the journey. I offer expert guidance on navigation, pacing, and techniques for overcoming challenging terrain, while also providing preventive measures to avoid potential risks. I ensure that the group adheres to proper hiking practices, including appropriate clothing, hydration, nutrition, rest breaks, and the selection of essential items for your backpack.
In addition to my guiding role, I serve as an English-Japanese interpreter and a registered nurse, ready to address any health concerns that may arise during the trip. I also share valuable insights into the environment, the volcano, cultural nuances, and the history of the area, enhancing your overall experience. My goal is to ensure you return safely while providing a memorable and enriching adventure.

I recently booked a guided two-day hike to Mt. Fuji and was incredibly fortunate to be paired with Hama as our guide. Simply put—Hama was the best guide I’ve ever had. From start to finish, he was knowledgeable, resourceful, and deeply committed to our safety and well-being. He knew the trails like the back of his hand, set a great pace for our group, and always made sure we were well taken care of. What impressed me even more was that Hama is also a registered nurse. When my father-in-law experienced some issues with his toe, Hama stepped in and handled it with care and professionalism. He went above and beyond throughout the trip—constantly checking on us, making sure we had what we needed, and ensuring we were mentally and physically ready for the challenge ahead. One thing that really stood out was how thoroughly he prepared us before the hike. He did a full gear and fitness checklist with us, making sure we were truly ready. A word of advice to future hikers: this is a physically demanding hike, and being unprepared can result in your guide turning you back for your own safety. Hama takes this responsibility seriously, and it’s part of what makes him such an outstanding guide. This was, hands down, one of the best experiences I’ve had—and Hama was a huge part of that. If I could give ten stars out of five, I would. Highly recommended!

I was coming to Japan with the idea of climbing Mount Fuji on the Fujinomiya Trail because I was coming during the off-season. I consider myself a more advanced hiker and climber, so was hiring a guide because of the potential for bad weather conditions. If you are someone that is less advanced or less experienced in hiking, you may want to consider hiring Hama who is absolutely excellent. He asked a lot of questions and made sure I was comfortable every step of the way during the hike that can be extremely helpful for some newer hikers and I appreciated his attention to detail. Like I said, I am a bit more advanced in hiking, so I felt pretty comfortable doing the whole climb and the trail is very well marked and paved for the most part. Hamas approach was very slow, steady and cautious. Which again I really appreciated and I can imagine other hikers and visitors coming would appreciate that as well. Hama was an incredible guide and I would recommend to those who are looking to summit Mt Fuji, especially in the off season. I had an amazing time (even though the weather was crappy, Hama and I made the best of it!!)

My 17-year-old son and I had the incredible opportunity to climb Mt. Fuji with Hama as our guide, and we truly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. From the very beginning, Hama was thoughtful, organized, and deeply knowledgeable. His pre-trip planning and encouragement for proper prep was spot on. We climbed out of season so I had some concerns and Hama made me feel at ease with everything. He struck the perfect balance between being professional and personable — always encouraging, always patient, and always prepared. Throughout the hike, he not only guided us safely up the mountain, but made the journey feel meaningful and enjoyable. He knew just when to push us and when to take a break, and he always made sure we were hydrated, warm, and comfortable, even giving some of his own water to my son when he ran out of the 160 ounces he brought which we were sure would have been enough. What really stood out was how much Hama cared. He went out of his way to connect with us, share stories, and ensure that the experience was something we’d never forget. Thanks to Hama, my son and I shared a once-in-a-lifetime memory together that we’ll always treasure. We even went out and enjoyed sushi together after the climb and Hama came through with a great recommendation on a place to eat near our hotel. If you’re considering climbing Mt. Fuji and want a guide who is experienced, kind, and truly invested in giving you the best possible experience — Hama is the one. Thank you again, Hama!
