Description

Experience the spectacular beauty of Mt. Tanigawa, one of Japan’s most iconic mountain destinations, on a guided hiking and mountaineering adventure in Gunma Prefecture. Known for its dramatic rocky ridges, beautiful alpine scenery, and changing landscapes throughout the seasons, Mt. Tanigawa offers a memorable experience for outdoor enthusiasts.

With a local mountain guide, you will enjoy the mountain safely while discovering the unique nature and scenery of the Tanigawa area. The route and pace can be adjusted according to your experience and fitness level, making this a great opportunity to explore one of Japan’s most impressive mountain areas.

If you are arriving by Shinkansen, your guide can pick you up at Jomokogen Station and drive you to the Tanigawadake Ropeway Station. If you prefer, you can meet your guide directly at Tanigawadake Ropeway Station.

From there, take the ropeway up to Tenjindaira, where your hike begins. Follow the Tenjin Ridge Trail toward Mt. Tanigawa, enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and the mountain’s distinctive rocky landscape along the way.

Reach the summit area around Tomano-mimi and Oki-no-mimi, where, weather and conditions permitting, you can take a well-earned break and enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding mountains.

Afterward, descend along the same trail back to Tenjindaira and take the ropeway down to the valley, finishing the adventure at Tanigawadake Ropeway Station.

The hike usually takes around 5–6 hours, with a total tour duration of approximately 7–8 hours, depending on mountain conditions and the group’s pace.

Itinerary

Day 1: Mt. Tanigawa Day Hike

Meet your mountain guide .

Clients arriving by Shinkansen can be picked up at Jomokogen Station and transported to Tanigawadake Ropeway Station. Alternatively, clients can meet the guide directly at Tanigawadake Ropeway Station.

Take the ropeway up to Tenjindaira, where the hike begins.

From Tenjindaira, hike along the Tenjin Ridge Trail toward Mt. Tanigawa. Enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the dramatic rocky landscape along the ridge.

After reaching the summit area of Mt. Tanigawa (Tomano-mimi / Oki-no-mimi), take a break and enjoy the panoramic mountain views, weather and conditions permitting.

After the summit, return along the same route via the Tenjin Ridge to Tenjindaira. Take the ropeway back down to the valley and finish the tour at Tanigawadake Ropeway Station.

Estimated hiking time: approximately 5–6 hours Total tour duration: approximately 7–8 hours, depending on conditions and the pace of the group.

Participants should have a good level of fitness and be comfortable hiking for approximately 5–6 hours on mountainous terrain. The route includes steep uphill and downhill sections, uneven trails, rocky terrain, and some exposed areas.

The total hiking distance is approximately 8–10 km, with an elevation gain of around 700–800 m. Participants should be able to maintain a steady pace for several hours and be comfortable with continuous ascents and descents.

Previous mountain hiking experience is recommended, although technical climbing skills are not normally required in good weather and trail conditions.
