Svalbard Sail to Ski Expedition in the Arctic

Arrive in Longyearbyen and board the boat in the afternoon. Please plan to arrive no later than 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Once everyone is on board, we’ll set sail through the fjord toward our first ski and snowboard area.

Boarding takes place on Saturday evening, and disembarkation is the following Saturday morning. You may fly out as early as Friday at 7:00 p.m. If your flight schedule does not match the itinerary, we can help arrange an extra night in Longyearbyen.

We begin our first ski tour on one of the peaks around Nordfjorden. As we sail through the Arctic landscape, we may also spot walruses resting on the ice.

In the morning, we sail from Nordfjorden and make a quick stop in Borebukta, where we may have the chance to see polar bears from a safe distance. We then continue to Ymerbukta for a ski tour across the glacier toward Kardtadtoppen, enjoying spectacular views of the surrounding fjords.

We spend the morning resting on the boat, drifting among floating ice and looking out for Arctic wildlife. In the afternoon, we head out for a ski tour to Doudmannen, making the most of the midnight sun and enjoying the views late into the evening.

We dock in Barentsburg, an old Russian mining town on the shores of Isfjorden. If weather conditions allow, we aim to ski Vøringen Peak. After the tour, we’ll explore the town, visit the local brewery, and finish the day with a relaxing sauna session.

We start the day with a ski tour from Colesbukta, passing the abandoned coal mine before continuing toward Vesuv Peak. In the afternoon, we sail toward the remote settlement of Pyramiden.

Taking advantage of spring conditions, we dock in the Pyramiden fjord, which remains frozen for much of the year. After the ski tour, we’ll explore the eerie abandoned settlement of Pyramiden and unwind in the sauna. Later in the evening, we sail back to Longyearbyen for our final night in the harbour.

After breakfast and checkout, you can head straight to the airport or take some time to explore Longyearbyen before your flight home.

If the weather, wind forecast, and group energy align, we may sail all the way to Ny Ålesund during the trip. This is a long journey — nearly 24 hours each way — but it offers the unforgettable sight of a glacier flowing directly into the sea.

To make this possible, we usually skip one day of ski touring. However, the journey itself is a remarkable Arctic experience and often becomes one of the highlights of the trip.
