Description

Join us on an unforgettable ski-touring week at Uløya and neighboring islands in the company of an IFMGA-certified guide. Enjoy the most amazing powder runs and stay at our comfy, warm, and fully equipped apartments at the Lyngen Outdoor Center.

Located at the northern end of the famous Lyngen Fjord in northern Norway, the remote island of Uløya is a truly extraordinary place. Unique landscapes of stunning peaks and steep walls falling straight into the sea with lots of powder snow make for one of the most spectacular ski touring destinations in the world.  Uløya is the only place on Earth where you can find 1000m-long slopes inclined at almost any angle, and falling right into the dark blue waters of the fjords. This is the Arctic, where you can really feel like you are on the edge of the world!

In this program, we will visit the most impressive peaks and slopes of Uløya. Additionally, we will have a modern and safe boat (8.5 m or 7.2 m, 150 HP aluminum) at our disposal. Some of the options that you can enjoy on this adventure include:

  • Going to the summit of Saeteraksla and Blåtinden (1142m) starting right from the doorstep of the lodge, enjoy a 15 km ski tour day then return for a cold beer and a relaxing hot sauna.

  • The famous Grand Traverse of Uløya, from Uløybukt to Havnnes - a 20 km ridge ski route taking in Kjelvagtinden (1104m), Uløytinden (1114m), and Blåtinden (1142m).

  • Boat tours with a beach landing and pick-up to explore the neighboring islands of Kågen and Arnøya with their serene valleys and amazing slopes.

  • Sea fishing. Our skipper can take you to the fishing grounds where you can catch your dinner.

  • Kid-friendly activities: fishing, snow-hole building, games using Arvas (searching and digging out a person, etc), and easy ski tours.

  • Upon prior request -  ice climbing on virgin couloirs, icefalls, and rock walls.

We offer stays for groups of 3 to 6 people in very comfortable apartments with breathtaking views. Our guides, all IFMGA-certified with excellent local knowledge, will help you get the most out of this experience,  And finally, our chef will prepare a tasty dinner based on fresh fish and even moose and reindeer. In March and early April, you can see the beautiful Northern Lights!

So if you wish to discover this ski touring paradise in Norway, just send us a request! Book your trip and join us on this trip of a lifetime!

We recommend you to watch this amazing 1 1/2 min video which has been made by a group of Belgians who came to ski with us in April.

We have a perfect quality crystal-clear drinking water straight from a tap.

BEST TIME AND SNOW CONDITIONS Weather in February is usually somewhat colder than March in April. February is really hard to predict and quite variable: it could be icy and cold or you could have lots of powder and sun. On the other hand, late April could be too warm -with snowline at 300m - but usually, it is great. Generally speaking each month has its highlights, so just choose what you like!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

1. Which airport to fly in/out of? -You can fly to Tromsø (3 hrs drive to Uløya) or to an airstrip at Sørkjosen (1/2 hrs to Uloya) -To make the transfer comfortable, you should arrive in Tromsø no later than 15:00 and have your departure flight after 14:00.

2. How is the transfer organized to/from the lodge? -There will be a van or minibus waiting for you at the airport. We will wait for the whole group to gather, then we will drive to Uløya. The drive takes 3 hrs, and there is an additional 10 mins boat ride or a ferry ride to the lodge.

3. Do you allow individuals to join a group? - Most of the tours are private, however, we have 3 weeks available during the season for individuals wanting to join a group. - Dates for 2023 are 5-12 MAR, 9-16 APR, and 30 APR – 07 MAY. - This involves sharing an apartment (with 2 separate bathrooms), but you will get a single room. There are 4 bedrooms per apartment, max number of participants is 6. Please note that the skiing level may vary amongst the group members, although we try to keep it similar.

4. How experienced do you need to be? - We do not set limits, we accept skiers from beginners to professionals. However, when organizing a group you should try to keep a similar fitness and skiing level. With open groups, we will try to keep the skiing level relatively consistent, but it’s not always possible.

5. Is it possible to make it with a family with kids? - Yes, of course, we have a lot of experience working with families and kids. The youngest skier so far was 9 yrs old.

6. When is the best time to come? - The season runs from late February to mid-May. There are no “best months” – the whole season offers some highlights in every period. May could be somewhat warmer but in recent years May was as good as March and the temperatures and snow conditions were very consistent.

7. What temperatures and conditions should I expect? - Although we are in the Arctic the temperatures are relatively mild. You should expect around -10 dg in March/beginning of April and -5dg late April and May. However, high in the mountains temperatures may drop even down to -20dg with high windchill factors, so you need to be well prepared in terms of windbreakers and down or Primaloft insulation.

8. Do you accept splitboarders? - Splitboarders are welcome, best when they form a private group but otherwise just as well.

9. What ski and safety equipment can I rent there and at what price? - We have Dynafit and Majesty Carbon skis together with BCA avalanche equipment. Ski touring set costs NOK 2000 per week, boots 1000 per week, avalanche set NOK 800 per week. - Equipment needs to be booked in advance.

**10. Which hotel do you recommend in Tromsø? - The hotels in Tromsø are very consistent in quality, so any choice is good. Comfort Express or Scandic are popular choices.

11. Do you cater to vegetarians or gluten-free diets? Yes, we do, we just need to know your food restrictions in advance.

Uloya is a trip of a lifetime. You find surreal beauty, natural elements at their chore where sea, mountains and skies confound, and shared passion from the hosts. Our guide Pavel was super professional and friendly. Artur, the main host loves to share his passion for nature, sport and good food. Explore Share was top class as they integrated our demand for an outdoor expedition very well and drafted out this incredible option very quickly. Easy access for follow up made us feel just good. Go for it.

Whoua!!!

We had a wonderful trip and were spoiled by all people over there, Artur was a great organizer and treated us like friends, Marcin was a perfect guide and always helpful and friendly, Pawel was the perfect cook who spoiled us with delicious food, Mike drove us everywhere and gave us always a save feeling, and also the other helping hands were all friendly and lovely. We hast a great time. Also the house was perfect for us and very nicely designed. The side program very good and also there the guides and staff friendly. Ding sledge touring was effectively too short for the price, but it was nevertheless beautiful. Snowscooters as well and the day on the water by boat a perfect break! So, all in whole a perfect holiday thanks to the professional and friendly staff!

Sublime experience ! Although the beauty had been well telegraphed by my predecessor friends, I was still astonished by the beauty of the pristine landscape and nature. Facing a slope covered in snow while being surrounded by fjords is the best combination of colors and drasticity at the same time. The local team headed by Artur is exceptionally efficient, always coordinated night and day, and very competent. The fact that Artur lives on site is particularly helpful.  A couple of notes to future visitors: (1) always go where Artur tells you (he knows where the good spots, finessed based on the local conditions), and (2) go with the boat and dingy, and start the ascent from the beach, at least once on your stay.  Our guide David Pellissier from Aosta was a great resource and companion: very safe, straight-shooter, and always tuned to the group's wishes and pace.
