This 2-day climbing trip in Carihuairazo I am proposing today is ideal for intermediate-level climbers. In fact, thanks to its proximity to Chimborazo Volcano, you will use this climb as an preparation before the biggest goal. Once at the 5.018-meter top of this volcano, you won’t believe such a viewpoint of the best peaks of the Ecuadorian Andes.
Carihuairazo is part of the “Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve” a natural and protected environment that conserves the native animals and plants of the region. That’s why Carihuairazo is often known as “the sister of Chimborazo”. However, this peak is rarely climbed but I can ensure it is worth.
In the Carihuairazo Massif you will find 2 main peaks: the central Maxim (5.020 m) and the Mocha, a bit lower. In order to climb them safely you will need some basic snow and ice techniques. However, it is not mandatory to have prior climbing experience.
Then, you can read more details about the itinerary of this program.
Day 1
First, we will move to Urbina (at 3.200 meters of altitude). Then, we start hiking on a trail among Chimborazo and Carihuairazo. Finally, after 6 six hours of walking we’re at the mountain hut (4.200 m) where we’ll have dinner and spend the night.
Day 2
We will get up early (around 5 a.m.) to have breakfast and get ready for the summit day. We will leave the hut one hour later in order to start the climbing. After a 3-hour climb we are in the glacier, where we must apply some mountaineering skills to reach the Carihuairazo’s summit.
Then, we will return to the hut by the same way. It will take us about 3 hours. Finally, we will drive back to Riobamba, where the program ends.

UIAGM/IFMGA Mountain Guide from Ecuador.
I fell in love with the mountains at a young age while climbing Ecuador’s volcanoes with my father. I guided in the Andes for 8 years and have been guiding for the past four years in the Northwest United States. In 1997 I expanded his adventure skills by taking on rock climbing. I represented Chimborazo province three times as the Ecuadorian National Rock Climbing Champion.
I completed his UIAGM certification with the Bolivian Mountain & Trekking Guide Association, accredited by the National School of Ski and Alpinism of Chamonix (ENSA), and completed Advanced Alpine and Rock Guides Courses with American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA).
I usually spend some months every year in Ecuador (from October to January, but it varies every year). The rest of the year I am based and guide in Europe.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
