Gran Paradiso is a relatively easy 4000er in the Alps, perfect for a first ascent or as acclimatization. Climb it in 2 days with Tomas, IFMGA certified mountain guide.
The Gran Paradiso (4061m), is located in the heart of the National Park with the same name. It’s the only 4000er entirely in Italy, and Italians are very proud of this beautiful peak.
Gran Paradiso is one of the easiest 4000ers to climb. Therefore it’s suitable as acclimatization before ascending Mont Blanc. And of course it’s also a great ascent in itself.
I offer you two options for this 2-day ascent. The first option is to leave from the southwest, through the Vittorio Emmanuele refuge (2732m). The starting point is the village of Pont (1900m), from which we reach the hut after 2 hours. Early the next morning, we begin the ascent towards the Gran Paradiso glacier. Then we go up to the top rocky ridge (Difficulty II UIAA). The ascent takes 4-5 hours.
The second option is through the Chabod refuge (2750m). In this case, the ascent starts at the Gran Paradiso camp, near Pont, in the Valsavarenche valley. The first day takes about 3 hours. The next day we head to the Lavecia glacier and then to the saddle, where the route connects with the Vittorio Emmanuele refuge. We should be at the top in 4 hours.
Even though it’s not as challenging an ascent as others, it should not be underestimated. It is a glacier ascent with a final exposed rock ridge. Therefore, you do need climbing skills and having experience with crampons. Are you unsure whether you are ready for it? I can advise you and help you improve your skills if necessary.
Do you want to climb Gran Paradiso with me? Then please send me a request specifying which option you prefer (if you already know). I would love to guide you up there!
At Vittorio Emanuele hut or Chabod hut.
From Pont to the Vittorio Emmanuele refuge.
From Gran Paradiso camp up to the Chabod refuge.
It’s an early morning start to reach the top of Gran Paradiso!
In the afternoon, we descend to the hut where we take our belonging to go back to the valley. If you are very tired there is the option to sleep at the refuge and continue down the next day.
I'm an IFMGA-certified mountain guide currently based in the Elbe Valley, Czech Republic. I've skied since a very young age but climbing is my true passion. I was in climbing representation and have climbed many big walls in the Alps, the US and Greenland. To me, mountain guiding is a unique profession: it allows me to spend my days doing what I like and to share with others the beauty I find in in the mountains.

The guide was nice. We went upto Studel hut. Next day the weather was very bad and hence we could not proceed further. We had no time to extend our day further. Never mind. We shall think of it again later. Tanks and regards.
