Rising at 3,177 meters, Chavin de Huantar dominates the surrounding scenery. Join me on this adventure to explore this archaeological site in the Peruvian Andes.
Chavin was once a main intersection of several major trade routes across the Cordillera Blanca. So, it was a strategic location, and it served as the capital of the Chavin civilization.
The archaeological site lies in the Callejon de Huaylas valley, and it covers more than 12,000 square meters. It includes big temple structures with interior and subterranean space, as well as pyramid platforms, sunken plazas and courts.
On our adventure, we’ll depart early around 8:00 am from our private bus station. Then, we’ll drive on the south side of Huaraz, passing by towns such as Recuay and Huacapampa. Also, we’ll drive by a eucalyptus trees, pastures, valleys, rivers and sheep herder villages. Furthermore, we’ll get to visit the mesmerizing Querococha lake before we continue up to the high pass at the Tunel de Cahuish (4,500 masl). Thereon, we’ll zig-zag a narrow valley, passing the Mosna River that will lead us to the Chavin ruins.
After a delicious lunch, we’ll begin exploring the site, visiting labyrinth rooms and plazas. We will learn about this intriguing culture and the history of the region. Finally, around 4:00 p.m. we will head back to Huaraz, to be back at about 7:00 p.m.
