  • Contemplate breathtaking views of the island while hiking.

Description

On these half-day walks in the main island of Madeira, I invite you to explore beautiful natural areas, go across lush forests and hike along the fantastic levadas. These are old irrigation channels that cross the entire island and allow us to visit places difficult to reach, such as lakes, caves and waterfalls. Join me on this trip and discover the best natural settings of Madeira!

Each day of the week, we can lead you to a different area on the island. On Mondays and Saturdays, we’ll take a 5-kilometer walk along the Levada do Norte and cross a eucalyptus forest around Serra d’Agua Valley. On the way, we’ll get to see breathtaking views of Encumeada, Ribeira Brava and Campanário as well as the island’s south coast.

On Tuesdays and Saturdays, it will be the turn of Paradise Valley and Rochao. We’ll take an easy walk across the Levada da Serra do Faial, from where we can observe a wide variety of flora and fauna. If you come with me on Thursdays or Sundays, we’ll follow the Levada do Castelejo around Referta and get to see part of the crops and the farmer’s work on the island.

Lastly, on Wednesdays, we’ll go for a 6-kilometer hike in the heart of the Machico Valley with incredible views of the coast, where the early settlers arrived in the 15th century. During this walk, we’ll discover the varied vegetation around the Levada dos Maroços.

Just a superb half-day, from start to finish. All the arrangements and timings were spot on. Our guide Felipe was outstanding and very knowledegable; something we found extremely helpful as first time visitors to Madeira. Even on the journey out to the Levada, we learned so much from him about the history of Madeira and local landmarks. We would definitely take another walk or a tour, when we return, although we may not be as lucky to get Felipe again as our guide the next time around.
