Description

The Nature Reserve of Westhoek in De Panne is the oldest natural reserve in Flanders. Surrounded by the beach and beautiful gray and white dunes, this vast area offers a dream scenery for long or short day hikes in the Belgian Coast. Join one of our local certified guides, learning about this unique environment!

De Panne is located near the border with France, on the North Sea Coast. The Westhoek Nature Reserve, founded in 1957, stretches over 340 hectares. You will discover a huge playground with all kind of dunes, grasslands and lime swamps. It is a truly wonderful landscape, also famous for its archaeological remains.

During this day hike we will cross the dunes, enjoying a wonderful sandy panorama over the hills. You will be amazed by some vast plains seemingly endless, as if you were in the Sahara!

The Nature Reserve of Westhoek boasts a natural garden where you can discover eleven different dune habitats, each with its typical flora. This area has two artificial breaks (slufters) in the dunes, to keep the sea at bay. The water of the sea reaches the nature reserve at high tide, making the wildlife and vegetation here very special.

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice.
