Mount Waddington (4019m) is the highest peak in the Coast Mountains range in British Columbia. IFMGA-certified mountain guide David takes you on this challenging 7-day heli-asissted ski mountaineering trip to its North West summit.
Mount Waddington (4019 m) is the highest peak in the spectacular Coast Mountains, in British Columbia. Its North West summit (4000 m) is one of the most interesting ski mountainering challenges in this breathtaking mountain range. Join me on this 7-day tour and enjoy this Canadian classic!
The main summit of Mount Waddington is a technical ascent and only reachable during summer by experienced mountaineers. So while our main goal during this expedition will be Mount Waddington’s Northwest summit, there are many other interesting peaks in the area for a great ski mountaineering experience. During these days we may ascend and ski down Mount Munday, Cavalier, Jester and Finality Mountains.
We will meet at Bluff Lake, British Columbia, the day before we start the trip for a relaxing dinner and final gear check. Next day, a helicopter will take us to this untouched wilderness area, to the Dias Glacier where we will set up our base camp.
During Day 3 and Day 7 of our trip, we will ascend Mount Waddington Northwest summit. Ideally, we will first go on some ski tours to the nearby summits for acclimatization. You can check the day-by-day itinerary below.
During these days, you will have the opportunity of ski-mountaineering some of the most breathtaking peaks and glaciers in British Columbia, while you discover the impressive Waddington Icecap area.
Please note this trip is suitable for ski mountaineers with and intermediate to advance level. You also need to be and advanced intermediate downhill skier and have previous overnight winter camping experience.

Bluff Lake, British Columbia To drive to Bluff Lake, you will go through the central Chilcotin plateau, via Williams Lake, to White saddle Air Services at Bluff Lake, where the helicopter is stationed. We will help you team up with another guest, good to ride share if possible as there is no bus service available. Driving from Vancouver or Calgary, this trip could take up to 10 hours. There is an airstrip at Anahim Lake via Pacific Coastal airlines, from there it is a 1.5 hour drive to Bluff Lake, transportation can be arranged depending on group size.
We will meet at 4pm at the White Saddle B&B in Bluff Lake. Relaxed dinner and final gear check. We will go over weather & avalanche conditions, last minute changes and logistic for the following days. We will also sign a liability waiver.
We will fly to the Dias Glacier and set up our base camp. We will do an avalanche beacon exercise and go for a short ski-tour.
Depending on the weather, conditions and participants, we will use the best possible window of opportunity to ascent to the Northwest summit of Mount Waddington. Ideally we will work ourselves up to it by acclimatizing and ski touring some of the nearby summits depending on conditions and participants, we will consider: Mt Munday, Jester, Cavalier & Finality Mountains.
We will fly back to Bluff Lake in the afternoon and enjoy a refreshing homemade meal and last night at the White Saddle B&B. After a luxurious breakfast next morning, you will start your individual trips back home.
