The Cordillera Real in Bolivia is home to some of the most stunning mountains in the country. On this 7-day program, we will drive 2 hours from La Paz to our trailhead and have the chance to explore some of the most amazing cultural landmarks and peaks in the Janq’u Quta lake area. Cave paintings, ruins, indigenous sites, glaciers, lakes, and amazing mountains will be on the menu of this amazing 1-week program.
Every day we will spend between 4-8 hours trekking in a wide variety of conditions. In the evening, we will enjoy the beautiful night skies at our campsite. Additionally, we will have one rest day to recover from our first treks and prepare for our next ones. Below you can find a detailed itinerary of this program to go mountain climbing in Bolivia.
Please keep in mind that you will need a good fitness level to join this program. Additionally, I recommend you arrive at La Paz a few days prior to our adventure so that you have time to properly acclimatize. Of course, I will be there to help and guide you every step of the way.
So, are you ready to try mountain climbing in Bolivia in a truly stunning location? Then join me on this 7-day program in the Cordillera Real and let me show you some of its best spots.
Meeting point
After 2 hours driving, a 4-hour trek (300 mt elevation gain) leads us to Qillqantiji cave paintings, Carmenpata ruins, indigenous leader Tupak Katari’s cave, and the village colonial church. There are rocks everywhere, and we use them to update our rock-climbing and abseiling techniques.
On an impressive mining road, we reach Janqu Quta where we set up our camp. To remind crampons and rope techniques, we ascend small Wila Lluxita glacier (2 hours uphill, F)
We walk up West glacier, a short rocky scramble and then down the normal route on North glacier. 6 hours.
300 mt of snow and ice ascent up to 55 degrees to the summit, we then downclimb the normal route. 8 hours return trip
From Mullu Apacheta Pass (4800 mt) we ascend the easy glacier normal route to the Janquyu summit. Then we traverse to Jisk’ a Pata on an exhilarating mixed ridge with granite rock and snow (AD)
This is the hardest classic route in the area with 400 mt of snow and ice slopes up to 65 degrees. Then we downclimb the easier normal route. 9 hours return trip. Drive back to Peñas or La Paz.

Aspirant Guide
My name is Davide. I grew up in Belgium and started climbing as a child because my mother used to hide the chocolate on the highest shelf.
I've been living, traveling and climbing in Bolivia since 2009. I enjoy high, famous mountains such as Illimani and Ancohuma but also have fun on smaller, remote mountains: Jaqusiri, Warawarani among others...
Having noticed big rocks in my backyard in Peñas, I started bolting them with some friends. Now the village has more than 100 climbing routes.
Working as a guide I like to offer my clients an original and safe experience, combining a strong knowledge of the Royal Range with special cultural visits.
