Description

Welcome to the most pristine and rugged region of the Patagonia.

The Aysen region is known for its natural beauty and little human population.

This dramatic landscape is filled with stunning glaciers, deep valleys, high peaks, blue lakes and lush vegetation. Another interesting feature is the rural people who have inhabited these valleys for generations. They have preserved their traditions and Gaucho culture.

The expedition begins in Coyhaique. This is where we will meet and have a briefing and the gear check. Then, we will get in the cars and drive South. Our destination is Puerto Bertrand, in the Bertrand Lake.

Here we will put all our expedition gear on the boat to cross the Bertrand Lake. That way we’ll connect to the Plomo Lake. At the far West end of the lake we will arrive at John’s ranch, which will be our base camp.

During the expedition we will have some donkey drivers or “pilcheros” to load our equipment up the mountain. Then, the trek begins by waking in west direction into the valley, following the waters of the Soler River.

The next day we will continue in order to cross the tree line and set up camp on a reserved snowfield. Here is where horses say goodbye and we must carry our own equipment to the glacier. Then, we will reach the Paulina Glacier where we will have to find the perfect place where to set up the camp. It is a good moment to teach you some snow camping skills.

The first day on the glacier will be dedicated to learn those techniques. Once the group feels confidence in its skills, it will be time to start exploring the glacier and climbing the peaks around. However, none of these peaks have names yet since not too many people have climbed them before.

Finally, after 6 days on the glacier it is time to return. So, we will re-connect with the green lands of the valley. At this point you won’t believe the beauty of the Aysen Region.

To celebrate our goal, we will enjoy a delicious “asado” at the ranch. We will spend one more day here to relax and recover energies after such a great adventure!

Does this mountain trip in the Aysen region sound tempting? So, let’s get in touch and explore it together. Fill out the form!

Mountain Leader

AAGM mountain guide from Argentina.

I was raised in Buenos Aires where I used to go sailing and fishing with my family during weekend and holidays. As a teenager I began traveling to Patagonia with friends to fish, hike and camp. Years later I became a rock climber and mountaineer since I wanted to asses more summits and amazing views.

At the age of 23 and after gathering a good amount of fun ascents and traverses along Patagonia, I decided to fully commit to a life in the outdoors. As a result I started my carrier at N.O.L.S. – National Outdoors Leadership School in the U.S.A. and Chile. I lead rock climbing and mountaineering trips in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Alaska and in Aysen (Chilean Patagonia) for nine years.

In 2009 finally settled permanently in Bariloche and focused my guiding work on the Lake District Region. Here I discovered new styles of guiding and service which were good to experience and helped me grow in this profession. Now I am able to mix my background on outdoor education with the guiding world and create unique experiences for active travelers.

I take advantage of every season of the year, going mountain biking and sea-kayaking in the summer, ice-skating on alpine lakes during the Fall, back-country skiing during the Winter, rock climbing and mountaineering as soon as the Spring makes it way through the snow.

Juan was a great guide. We went in mid November and there’s no way we could have done the Frey to Jacob traverse without him. He’s very relaxed but you feel very safe and unhurried, good fun to be around. He looked after us really well and even let us take a shower at his place before we headed off to the airport.
