Enjoy a trekking day in this fantastic circuit of the Cordillera Negra and reach the Wilcacocha Lake with the help of Juventino, a local IFMGA guide. It also works as an acclimatization before a summit attempt in the Cordillera Blanca.
As you may know, the Wilcacocha is a beautiful lagoon of the southwest of Huaraz, in the Cordillera Negra, also known as the Black Mountains. The lagoon, at 3725 meters of altitude, is an exceptional viewpoint of the Andean mountains. From there, we can identify several peaks, as the Huandoy, Huascaran, Chopicalqui, Vallunaraju, Ocshapalca, Ranrapalca, Churup and many others.
The name of the lake comes from the Quechua language and means “Grandson Lagoon”. I think it is a perfect circuit to acclimatize your body before trying a climb to a summit of the Cordillera Blanca.
As for the itinerary, we will take a public transport in Huaraz to the Santa Cruz bridge. Then we will start walking uphill to the lake in a gentle and easy zig-zag route. This trek will take us 2:30 hours approximately.
Once we arrive, we will admire the lake and its surrounding cattails plants, bunchgrass and quenual trees. We’ll also see wild ducks, Andean birds and aquatic animals. We will stay there for one hour visiting the lagoon and enjoying the scenery.
Finally, an easy 3-hour hike will take us to the starting point from where we’ll drive back to Huaraz.
This trekking day adventure is available all year round. I can lead private groups as well as larger ones, with 20 guests or more. I don’t have an open group to join yet so I will open a new one once you contact me.
So, if you want to enjoy a quite hike or acclimatize your body for a bigger goal in the Cordillera Blanca, please contact me now. I will be here waiting for your message!

My visit to Huaraz was one of the most beautiful trips of my life. Our days of adventure began with the visit of lagoons in the white mountain range; wilcacocha, churup, paron, lagoon 69 and we finish with the most beautiful Santa Cruz trek. Our trip was a complete success, during the stay in Huaraz we stayed at the ALPAMAYO GUEST HOUSE hotel, an excellent place in the center of Huaraz. I recommend Mr. Juventino to make his trip and his hotel the and if nice family People.
