FAQs: Backcountry Skiing in undefined

What should I know about Backcountry Skiing Europe?

Boasting 10 different major mountain ranges as well as 100 subranges, Europe has plenty of scenic and diverse backcountry skiing spots. Nearly every country on the continent has a major mountain range to explore on your skis.

One of the many perks of backcountry skiing is all of the diversity involved in just one sport. Hut-to-hut skiing is one of the most popular variations in which skiers head on a circuit or loop, covering plenty of ground and seeing more than would be possible from a single spot.

For ski tourers heading out into more remote areas, heliskiing is a great way to get to cover more ground and get to those spots to which roads do not lead. Exotic skiing destinations such as Russia and Turkey are particularly popular for these trips, but you can heliski in Switzerland and Italy too.

Few things are as exciting as freeride skiing. Heading to Triglav or another steep mountain slope is a great way to get that adrenaline rush as you race down from the summit of some lofty peak. The Alps and the Caucasus Range are also great freeride destinations.

Why should I choose Europe for my Backcountry Skiing adventure?

Stunning scenery

Europe’s winter scenery is absolutely gorgeous and there is no better way to see it than strapping on a pair of backcountry skis and heading out into the wilderness. Regardless of where you go, incredible views of Europe’s snow-capped peaks and the continents varied and diverse scenery are sure to greet you.

Get off the beaten path

While there are many quite well-known and crowded ski spots in Europe, there are plenty of others that are well off the beaten path. Sick of waiting in line at the chairlift in the Alps? Head to the Pirin Mountains in Bulgaria or the High Tatras in Poland. For every famed skiing spot on the continent, there are dozens of other lesser known, but equally brilliant, ones.

The Northern Lights

If your backcountry skiing trip happens to take you up into Scandinavia, then keep your eyes peeled for the Northern Lights. Also known as the aurora borealis this atmospheric phenomenon creates an other worldly experience in the sky. Heading up around the Arctic Circle from November to April is the best time to see it.

What can I expect from the weather during my Backcountry Skiing trip in Europe?

During the winter, Europe tends to be cold and humid. Average daily temperatures hover around freezing and drop as you gain in elevation. Snowfall is generally most frequent at the beginning of the season.

When is the best time to travel to Europe for Backcountry Skiing?

January to April. In Scandinavia, the ski touring season is from March to May.

My Son and I we're absolutely delighted with our day out skiing the Vallee Blanche. Our guide Kyriakos was friendly, helpful and extremely professional. We really felt that we were being looked after by one of the best. Kyriakos also shared his knowledge of the route, the mountains and he even gave us some tips to improve our skiing. An absolutely fantastic experience that we will never forget.

Nikolay Pavlov is an experienced guide with intimate knowledge of the terrain and conditions in Bansko. A great half day trip with two summits on a very short notice. Additionally good company to ride with.

The tour to the Pisgana glacier was great, even though the snow conditions were icy & challenging. We’d definitely recommend Renzo, the guide, and the Explore Share website. The costs were v.competitive and an incentive to book. The only drawback was the website made it difficult to swop some details like email addresses (e.g. for sending photos). Anyway, we intend using the service & guide again next time we’re in Passo Tonale!

Uloya is a trip of a lifetime. You find surreal beauty, natural elements at their chore where sea, mountains and skies confound, and shared passion from the hosts. Our guide Pavel was super professional and friendly. Artur, the main host loves to share his passion for nature, sport and good food. Explore Share was top class as they integrated our demand for an outdoor expedition very well and drafted out this incredible option very quickly. Easy access for follow up made us feel just good. Go for it.
