The Black Forest is a mountainous massif that runs through southwest Germany. It is widely considered to be the “green lungs” of Europe and boasts numerous mountain peaks ranging from a height of 200 meters, all the way up to 1,495 meter-high Feldberg, the highest mountain on the massif.
Freiburg im Breisgau sits in the heart of this massif and is the perfect starting points for plenty of incredible hikes. Along with being an easy driving distance away from Feldberg as well as the end of the Westweg, there are plenty of other great options around Freiburg.
Among the most popular are heading to Baldenweger Buck (1,460 meters) and Seebuck (1,448 meters), both of which is the northern and southern minor summtis on Feldberg, respectively. The earby Herzogenhorn (1,415 meters) and Belchen (1,414 meters) are also popular destinations and are the highest peaks on the massif.
During the summer months, Freiburg im Breisgau has an average daily temperature that hovers around 20 ºC. Summers are also the wettest time of year, with about 100millimeters falling each month. May and June are slightly wetter than the rest.
Any trip to Freiburg im Breisgau likely begins with a flight into Euroairport (BSL) in Basel, in neighbouring Switzerland. From here, there are plenty of buses that head right into Freiburg.
