**_A great combination of hiking and mountaineering in one of the best places of the Peruvian Andes. Join me in this 12-day hike in Quebrada Quilqueyhuanca with a summit attempt to Ishinca peak._** 

The **trekking in Quebrada Quilqueyhuanca** I am proposing is a short hike among a valley far from the crowds. Moreover, this trek will be the best way to acclimatize our bodies before the big climb. It is also a nice opportunity to enjoy an activity with your family. The road does not present major difficulties.

When the trek progresses you will also find a 13-km-long gorge in the heart of **Quilqueyhuanca** **Valley**. It leads directly to a cirque of mountains over 6.000 meters high. The scenery at this point is really stunning. However, what make it most beautiful is the green grass dominated by cows, horses and donkeys.

Finally, you will also discover several archaeological remains. And it is worth mentioning the **Quilqueyhuanca** **wildlife**. During the trek you will admire from small birds to amazing foxes.

The second stage of this trip, after the acclimatization trek, consists in climbing the **Ishinca Peak**. With that goal in mind we will trek across the Ishinca Valley.

Ishinca is a perfect option for those climbers who want to summit a 6000-meter peak with a encouraging landscape around. And even if you don’t reach the top it is anyway an incredible climbing. On the way up you will have **the best views of Ishinca, Urus, Tocllaraju, Ranrapalca, and the Palcarajus**.

Quebrada Quilqueyhuanca Trek + Ishinca Climb

### **Positioned between two great mountains: Ranrapalca (6,112m) and Palcaraju (6,274m), the Nevado Ishinca (5,550m), while the smaller of its neighbours, is nonetheless an amazing peak. And, in just 3 days, you will get to climb your way to the top of the mountain’s amazing summit.**

Located in the **Cordillera Blanca of Peru, the Nevado Ishinca** is a great mountain to climb for those who wish to take on the much larger peaks in the range, but want to get properly acclimatized and get some important experience in the area first.

Our journey will begin in **Huaraz**. From there, we will go to either **Pashpa or Collon (3,600m).** After that, we will go to the **base camp of the Nevado Ishinca (4,350m**), where we will spend the night. On the following day, we will climb to the summit of the mountain. After you’ve soaked in some tremendous views, we will then head back to the base camp for the night. On the third and final day of the trip, we will leave the base camp and go back to **Pashpa** before returning to **Huaraz**.

Participants on this trip should be in **good physical condition**. Prior mountaineering experience is recommended as well.

Our expedition starts in Huaraz, we will pick you up at your hotel with private transportation. After pick up we will head north through the Huaylas valley to Paltay village, from this point we will turn off with the transport to the east side by a road towards Pashpa village. Our donkey driver and donkeys will be waiting for us to transfer the logistic equipment to the campsite. To get to Ishinca base camp we will hike through a plain all along the Ishinca canyon, we will be able to observe the vegetation and the glacier river on the trail. After 3 hours of walking we will be able to see the Palcaraju massif and its peaks, then we will continue along the trail until we reach the impressive Tocllaraju snowy mountain.

Finally, after a total of 4 hours of hiking, we will arrive at our campsite.

Huaraz (3.100 m) – Pashpa Village (3.600 m) – Base camp Ishinca (4.350 m)

The long awaited day has arrived, it’s summit day. We will start hiking in zigzagging until we reach the Longori bivouac located at 5000m high. We will make a short rest stop in this place and then continue through a rocky area. After 3 hours of walking, we will get to the glacier, at this place we will equip ourselves, our guide will make an inspection of everything necessary for climbing and finally we will rope up to continue the route. We will continue making traverses to overcome crevasses and reach the pass Ranrapalca – Ishinca and we will stop for a short rest. We continue climbing and after approximately 4 hours we will reach the summit to enjoy a splendid view of the colossal mountains that surround us: Ranrapalca, Palcaraju, Tocllaraju, Pucaranra, Chinchey and other 5 miles as the Urus, Akillpo and more.

We will stay at the summit some time to rest, hydrate and take pictures. Finally we will go down by the same route of ascension, we will arrive to our camp, we will eat and rest.

Our expedition has come to an end… After breakfast we dismantle the tent for the return down, the donkey driver and donkeys are ready to carry all the logistic equipment. We hike downhill through the Ishinca canyon until we reach Pashpa village. The transport will be waiting for us at this point to transfer us to Huaraz.

Are you looking for a relatively easy climb in the beautiful **Cordillera Blanca of Peru**? Do you want to properly acclimatize on a gorgeous peak in order to tackle one of the larger and more challenging peaks in the range? Then you’ll love this **3-day climbing adventure that will take you to the summit of Urus Central (5,495m).**

Located in the **Ishinca Valley**, the **Urus Peak** is full of wonderful views. And, the snowy surface makes the climbing experience something truly magical, particularly from the summit.

Our journey will begin in **Huaraz**. From there, we will go to **Pashpa** and then on to the **Ishinca Base Camp (4,350m**). We will spend the next two nights at the camp, where you can explore and enjoy some great views, both day and night. On the second day of the trip, we will climb up to the summit of **Urus** before returning to the base camp. Some of the peaks you’ll be able to see from the summit include **Palcaraju, Tocllaraju, Copa, Akilpo** and more. On the final day of the trip, we will return to **Pashpa** before heading back to **Huaraz**.

While **Urus** is not a technically challenging mountain, it is recommended that you still have some prior climbing experience. You should also be in **good physical condition**.

It’s the day of our climb to the summit. After breakfast, we will start our hike through a zigzag path and pass through a rocky area to the glacier, at this place we will equip ourselves, our guide will make an inspection of everything necessary for climbing and finally we will be roped to continue along the route. After approximately 3 hours we will reach the summit to enjoy a splendid view of the colossal snowy mountains of 6 thousand high that surrounds it: Ranrapalca, Palcaraju, Tocllaraju, Copa, and other 5 thousand as the Ishinca, Akillpo, Vicos and more.

We will stay at the summit for a while to rest, hydrate and take pictures. Finally we will make the return down by the same route of ascent, we will arrive to our camp, we will feed and rest.

The **Santa Cruz Trek** is a very popular hiking option in the Cordillera Blanca. But today I'd like to propose you a bigger plan…

You will not only have the opportunity of walking along the Santa Cruz Trek. You will also live a unique mountaineering expedition up to the summits of 3 amazing peaks: the **Urus** (5495 m), the **Ishinca** (5550 m) and the **Tocllaraju** (6035 m). Therefore, the Santa Cruz Trek will help you acclimatize your body to the height and get ready for the climbing stage of this trip.

As you may know, the Ishinca and Urus peaks do not involve a technical knowledge. However, the Tocllaraju has some stretches of technical and steep climbing. That is why I always recommend to have some prior ice climbing experience. In addition, it is also important that you know how to use crampons and piolets and how to descend by abseiling.

The best season to come to the Cordillera Blanca and enjoy this amazing program is **from May till September**. I can lead a group of 6 guests during the trekking stage. After breakfast in the hotel we will travel by private bus along the Callejón de Huaylas. We will make our first stop in Carhuaz. Then we will continue traveling to the Cashapampa District to meet the donkey drivers at the trailhead. So, here we start a six hour hike to our first camp: Llamacorral, at 3800 m.

Huaraz – Cashapampa – Llamacorral 

A full hiking day awaits us today. After having breakfast we will start a 2-hour hike in direction to the Ichiccocha and Jatuncocha Lakes. From here we continue for another two hours to the Alpamayo base camp. From there, you’ll have a privileged viewpoint of the Alpamayo, Quitaraju, Artesonraju, Paron and Aguja mountains. Two more hours of hiking will bring us to our second campsite in Taullipampa.

We will start the day at 8 AM. A 4-hour hike will take us to the Punta Union Pass (4750 m) where we will have lunch while enjoying the splendid landscape. After that we’ll descend for approximately 3 or 4 hours to our final camp, in Cachinapampa at 3800 meters of altitude.

Taullipampa – Punta Union Pass – Cachinapampa

After breakfast we will start walking down for about 2:30 hours to Vaqueria, where our bus will be waiting for us. Transportation to Huaraz passing the Portachuelo Pass at 4770 meters. Finally, we will continue our travel to Yuraccorral, where we will have lunch. After registering at the control of the Huascaran National Park, where we’ll continue down to the valley until we are in Yungay and then in Huaraz. Transfer to your hotel.

Cachinapampa – Vaqueria – Huaraz

This day you will have free day to do some shopping and get ready to start the second stage of this program.

Rest day in Huaraz

Private bus to the trailhead in Pashpa, where we will meet the donkey drivers. Then, we will hike along the Ishinca Valley, where there is the National Park’s control. After the check-in we will have lunch and continue walking in direction to the Ishinca base camp. Here we will check our climbing equipment for the next day and spend the night in tents.

Huaraz – Pashpa – Base Camp Ishinca

We will wake up early and have breakfast at 3 AM. After that we will start hiking towards the glacier for 2:30 hours. Here we must use our climbing gear to climb up to the summit. After 3 hours we will be at the top of the Ishinca enjoying a nice view for some minutes and taking pictures of the valley. We will then start the descent for about 2 hours to the Moraine camp and continue to the Base Camp, where we’ll spend the night.

Base Camp – Summit Ishinca– Base Camp

Today we’ll start hiking at 4 AM arriving at the glacier 2 hours later. Then we will start climbing up the glacier until we are in the 5497-meter summit. After some pictures, we must descend for about 1:30 hour to the Moraine camp and finally to the Base Camp. Overnight camping there.

Base Camp – Urus summit

You will have the free day to walk around the camp and prepare the climbing gear to the next challenge: the Tocllaraju.

Base Camp - Rest day

Today we must reach the Camp 1. After 2:20 hours we will be arriving to the glacier where we must put our climbing gear on to continue. Finally, we’ll spend the night in the Camp 1, over the glacier.

Base Camp – Camp 1 (5200 m)

After breakfast at 3 AM we will climb up to the Tocllaraju summit for about 5 hours. Once at the top we will enjoy the splendid views of the Huascaran, Santa Cruz and Ranrapalca peaks. Time to return to the Camp 1. Here, we will pick up our equipment and continue to the Base Camp, where we’ll spend the last night.

Camp 1 – Tocllaraju summit - Base Camp

After breakfast we must walk down to Pashpa. Once in there our private transfer will be waiting to take us to Huaraz and then, to your hotel. Time of arrival in Huaraz: 2 PM.

This **trekking and mountaineering program in Huaraz**, in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca, proposes the **combination of Santa Cruz trekking with the ascent of two mountains: Urus and Ishinca**. But you can also choose to do just one of the two parts, either the trekking program or the ascents. Check both options and join me to the beautiful mountains of the Peruvian Andes!

The **Santa Cruz trek is a beautiful 4 days hike to appreciate all the beauty of Cordillera Blanca**. We’ll enjoy summits such as the Chopicalqui, the Quitaraju or the Huandoy and the trek ends in the lagoons of the Quebrada Llanganuco. The Huascaran towers above these high mountains with its 6778m. This majestic group of high mountain pastures, ravines, valleys, lakes, glaciers and crests of ice is the proof of the powerful geography of Peru. This trek which climbs progressively, is an ideal way of acclimatizing for the ascent of high altitude peaks.

**For the ascent of Urus and Ishinca we’ll move to the valley of Ishinca, which offers different possibilities of ascents and treks.** We reach the base camp from Pashpa at 3600m by a panoramic and progressive path. Each ascent can be done in a day, leaving from Ishinca refuge.

The **Urus 5490m** is a perfect mountain for acclimatization. The slopes on the glacier are easy to climb and lead to the summit. If you leave early in the morning the ascent can end with lunch at the base camp.

The **Ishinca 5530m**, is an excellent mountain to climb for those who don’t have much experience and also for those who want to be well acclimatized before starting more difficult ascents. On the way up there is an easy glacier with a steep part of 100m just before the summit. Impressive view of Ranrapalca and Huantsan.

**Itinerary – Part 1 – Santa Cruz trek**

**Day 1: Marcara, bus to Cashapampa 2900m, trek to Llamaccorral 3760m**

A short journey by bus to Cashapampa where the trek begins. We walk up through a arrow gorge to reach the Quebrada of Santa Cruz. At about 3800m the valley opens up progressively and the mountains become visible. The tents are pitched at Llamaccorral. Meals: B, L, D

**Day 2: Llamaccorral 3760m – Base camp of Alpamayo 4300m – Taullipampa 4250m**

The panorama becomes grandiose. After the Hatuncocha lagoon we leave the main path and climb up towards the Base camp of the Alpamayo by following the Quebrada Arhuaycocha. A magnificent view of the Quitaraju, the Alpamayo and the Pucajirca. Return to the main route, then to a wellindicated path on the edge of the mountain and reach the main valley. The tents are pitched at Taullipampa at the foot of the impressive granite rock face of Taulliraju. Superb view of the White Pyramid of Artesonraju. Meals: B, L, D

**Day 3: Taullipampa 4250m – Punta Union Pass 4750m – Cachinapampa 3700m**

Climb up to the Punta Union Pass opposite the granite rock face of Taullipampa. Downhill to the Quebrada Huaripampa passing near the Morococha Lagoon. We discover the impressive side of the Chacraraju 6112m, one of the mythical mountains of the Cordillera. The tents are pitched at Cachinapampa. Meals: B, L, D

**Day 4: Cachinapampa 3700m – Vaqueria 3800m – Portachuelo 4767m – Huaraz**

Easy descent towards the small villages of Huaripampa, then we go down the valley Demanda, passing by Vaqueria and then by a wood of quenoals we take our bus on the road from Yanama to Yungay. We arrive at the pass of Portachuelo 4767m. Very pleasant view of Yanapaccha 5400m and of Chopicalqui 6350m, Huascarán. Meals: B, L, D

**Itinerary – Part 2 – Urus (5490m) and Ishinca (5530m) ascent**

**Day 1: Marcara 2750m – bus to Pashpa 3500m – Ishinca refuge 4350m**

Transfer by bus to the village of Pashpa 3500m and the start of the trek by a path along the edge of the mountain from which you can see the Copa and the Huascaran in the north. The Quebrada Ishinca begins with a wood of Quenoals (a typical tree of the cordillera). It is deep and progressive and helps you to discover the superb treks around the Ishinca. We then cross a plain and reach the Ishinca refuge which is just below a mountainous cirque.

**Day 2: Ascent Ishinca Refuge 4350m – the Ishinca summit 5530m**  
On leaving the refuge we cross the river and join the path which zigzags up to the plateau. The slope is more gentle up to the end of the lagoon Ishinca. We continue up the north glacier to a small pass with little crevices. About a hundred metres before the summit the slope is steep, at 45°. A pleasant view from the summit. Return via the south-west glacier near the Ranracalpa and descent to the refuge.

**Day 3: Ascent of the Urus. Ishinca Refuge 4350m – Summit of the Urus 5490m**

We approach the eastern slope of the Urus which starts in the middle of blocks of stone. The rural path continues in short zigzags until it reaches a headland of blocks of stone. The slope becomes more gentle and we climb the glacier on easy slopes. In the last metres before the summit there is very little snow.

**Day 4: Ishinca Refuge 4350m – Pashpa 3500m – bus for Marcara – Huaraz.**

##### The **Cordillera Blanca** is one of the most stunning mountain ranges on Earth! Join me on this adventure. And let me take you to the summit of **Urus (5,420m)** and **Ishinca (5,530m)** in this **6-day trip** through the **Cordillera Blanca**.

This magnificent range is located in **Peru**, and it forms part of the **Andes mountain range**. It extends for over 200 kilometers to the northwest. It lies at the heart of the **Ancash region**, parallel to the **Santa river**, in the **Santa Valley** or **_Callejon de Huaylas_**. This area is mainly covered by the **Huascaran National Park**.

There are many things that make the **Cordillera Blanca** unique. One of them is that the **Cordillera Blanca** is the most extensive and longest  tropical ice-covered mountain range on Earth! Also, it has the largest concentration of snow and ice in **Peru**. Moreover it has a very impressive collection of over **722 individual glaciers**. For those reasons, and more, the **UNESCO** provides special protection, naming it part of the **Huascarán Biosphere Reserve**, and a **Natural World Heritage Site**.

Over our **6-day adventure**, we will unveil some of the most mesmerizing parts of the **Cordillera Blanca**. And we will ascend two of its most iconic peaks, **Urus** and **Ishinca**.

Huaraz

We’ll venture into the Huascaran National Park. And we’ll arrive to the Llaganuco lagoon. Finally, we’ll trek back to Huaraz, where we’ll spend our first night at the Campo Base Hostel.

Huascaran National Park

Our day will begin with a transfer from Huaraz to the Cochapampa lagoon. There, donkeys will wait for us to transport our bags to the Urus, Ishinca and Tocllaraju base camp. And, once we reach it, we will camp there for the night.

Huaraz- Cochapampa

Due to the height and difficulty of the trek we will spend the day at base camp resting. Then, we’ll camp there and spend the night under a mesmerizing blanket of stars.

Resting day

Our day will begin really early. We’ll ascend through a zigzag type path that we’ll lead us to the Ishinca ice-capped peak. Then, we’ll keep trekking until we reach Ishinca’s summit. Finally we’ll return to our camp for a delicious dinner and to spend there the night.

This last day we’ll head from base camp to the Urus mountain. Then, we’ll trek back to Cochapampa, where a vehicle will be waiting for us to take us back to Huaraz. Finally, we’ll stay at the Campo Base Hostel for our last night.

Huaraz – Hostel Campo Base (Parque Ginebra 120 Huaraz). There’s a bus that leaves from Lima’s international airport to Huaraz.
