We will set off from Ajaccio and then transfer to Bavella, where our exciting trekking adventure will begin. From there, we will cover the essential 13-stages of the GR20 hiking route until we reach Bonifatu before transferring back to Calvi. You can find a detailed itinerary below.

Keep in mind that this is a challenging trek. Therefore, you will need a very good fitness level and prior experience. Of course, we will be there to help and guide you every step of the way. We welcome the group at the start of the morning in Ajaccio, transfer to the Col de Bavella. We take **the alpine variant** to cross the famous **Aiguilles de Bavella** . Night at Asinao refuge.

Duration: 4h00 / Up : +810m / Down: -410m / 6,7 km

Bavella - Asinau

Morning ascent of **Incudine 2134 m**. We discover **the Cuscione plateau** and in the distance the Gulf of Ajaccio. The relief becomes softer, between the hills is the warm Bassetta inn. Night in Bassetta.

Duration: 5h30 / Up : +710m / Down : -900m / 12,3 km

Asinau - Bassetta

We walk on **the edge of the statues’ ridge,** between the blocks of granite tortured by the wind, against the backdrop of **the Tyrrhenian Sea.** Night at refuge d’Usciolu.

Duration: 4h30 / Up : +630m / Down: -210m / 8,4 km.

Bassetta - Usciolu

We continue our progress towards the north by an **aerial route on the ridges** between the Taravu valley and the eastern plain. On the route, we climb **the Punta Cappella 2041 m**. Night at the Verde gite.

Duration: 7h00 / Up : +790m / Down: -1240m / 14,5 km

Usciolu - Verde

Through the beech forest of Marmano, we reach **the Pozzi du Renoso**, curious lawns at altitudes dotted with water holes. The Gr 20 then follows **an old walkway** through a beautiful beech forest. Overnight in Capanelle.

Duration: 6h00 / Up : +850m / Down: -520m / 18,6 km

Verde - Capanelle

We follow an old mule track which takes us to the **Col de Palmente (1640 m)**. For the last time, the eastern coast takes shape at our feet offering a splendid panorama over **the ponds of Diana and Urbino.** Descent into the Vizzavona beech forest. Night at the gîte at Vizzavona station.

Capanelle - Vizzavona

We leave Vizzavona passing the famous **Cascades des Anglais.** The climb continues in an increasingly mineral world and reaches **Punta Muratello (2,141 m).** The descent is steep but the view of **the highest peaks of the island** rewards our efforts. Overnight at Onda.

Duration: 6h40 / Up: +1220 m / Down  : -710 m / 11,8 km

Vizzavona - l'Onda

Choice according to weather conditions: the crest crossing by **the Pinzi Corbini** (2021m) or the ascent of the **Manganellu and its natural pools** . Night at the Petra Piana refuge.

Duration: 5h15 / Up: +900 m / Down: -490 m / 10,2 km

Onda - Petra Piana

Short morning climb to the **col de la Haute route at 2206 m.** Aerial route on the ridges which overlook **the lakes of Melu and Capitellu** to access **the breach of Bocca ae Porte 2225 m.**  Night at the sheepfolds of Vaccaghja.

Duration: 6h00 / Up : +630m / Down: -890m / 11,3 km

Petra Piana - Vaccaghja

We continue our journey and cross a wide beech grove at altitude. Stop at **Ninu Lake** one of the “pearls” of the Corsica mountain, a **paradise for wild horses.** Night in Castel di Vergio.

Duration: 5h30 / Up : +350m / Down: -550m / 13,8 km

Vaccaghja - Vergio

Change of scenery: we enter **the volcanic massif of the Grande Barrière** and go up the upper Golo valley to the **Col de Foggiale**. Night at the sheepfolds of Ballone.

The most sporty day of the route with the ascent to the **Pointe des Eboulis** on the crest of **Monte Cintu the highest peak in Corsica (2710m). The possible ascent of the summit** depending on physical and weather conditions.  
Night at the Ascu Stagnu lodge.

Ballone - Ascu

By a short and steep ascent, we reach **the Col de la Muvrella**. We abandon the world of peaks and dive into the canyon until **the footbridge of the Spasimata;** the Mediterranean atmosphere is gradually gaining ground. Arrival at Bonifatu and return transfer to Calvi.

13-day Corsica GR20 Hiking Adventure

##### **This is not your typical trek**. Contrary to most hikes through lovely peaceful meadows and charming valleys, this trek will take you across Europe’s most challenging routes. **The GR20 is a trip for the brave, only for those prepared enough to meet this challenge**.

Join me on **the most difficult hike in Europe**. I will take you through terrains that seem out of a gladiator’s arena. Together, we’ll defeat some of nature’s **most demanding paths**. We’ll scrape across **boulder fields**. And we will slide down **thrilling inclined slopes**. We’ll also face **rocky passages** worth of any experienced rock climber.

Easy, straightforward, flat roads will be something we won’t even miss. Instead, every section we’ll conquer, will leave you wanting more! And as a reward, we will get to see **dazzling sceneries** and **mesmerizing views** all throughout the trek. We’ll also get a real taste of the **traditional life** of those that inhabit these mountains.

So be prepared to roughen it up. As we will be staying in some **charming but basic huts** along the way. Thus, we’ll have to **bring our own sleeping bags**. But meals and snacks will be available.

**How long is it?** **6 days** through the **south route**. But **if you can’t stay more than a week we can change the itinerary** removing the first stage. In this case we’ll start in Bavella and end in Vizzavona

**Who can participate in the GR20?**

*   Participants that are in good physical condition and be used to rocky and uneven terrain.
    
*   Also folks who regularly practice endurance sports such as cross country ski, trail, running
    

**This isn’t a trip for those who “want” to accomplish it. It is for those who are able to do so. If you are up for the challenge, don’t hesitate! Send me a request and let me guide you through this adventure.**

Reception in Ajaccio. Then we’ll transfer to the Bavella pass. We’ll take the Alpine variant to cross Bavella. And we will spend the night in Asinau. **Duration: 4 hours / Positive vertical drop: 810 m / Negative vertical drop: -410 m / Distance: 6.7 km**

First we’ll climb to the Includine (2134 m). Then, we’ll cross the plateau grasslands in Cuscione, where the terrain softens. And at night we’ll stay at Bassetta or Crocci sheepfold. **Duration: 5.30 hours / Positive vertical drop: 710 m / Negative vertical drop: -900 m / Distance: 12.3 km**

Asinau - Bassetta / Crocci

We’ll begin by walking on the crest of the ridge statues. After that we’ll cross between the granite boulders eroded by the wind, with the backdrop of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Finally we’ll sleep at the Usciolu refuge. **Duration: 4.30 hours / Positive vertical drop: 630 m / Negative vertical drop: -210 m / Distance: 8.4 km**

Bassetta/Crocci - Usciolu

The day will begin trekking towards the North. We’ll hike by an air route of ridges, on the watershed line between Taravu Valley and the eastern plain. Also, we’ll climb the Punta Capella (2041m). And we will stay at the Prati refuge or Col de Verde lodge for that night. If we stay at Verde, there will be assistance with your bag available. **Duration: 7 hours / Positive vertical drop: 790 m / Negative vertical drop: -1240 m / Distance: 14.5 km**

Usciolu - Prati/Verde

We will cross the Marmano forest. Then we’ll join the Pozzi du Renoso plateau with its lawns dotted with water holes. After that, we’ll find a former walkway that makes the easiest step of the GR20. At night we’ll stay in the Capanelle lodge. **Duration: 6 hours / Positive vertical drop: 850 m / Negative vertical drop: -520 m / Distance: 18.6 km**

Prati/Verde - Capanelle

First we’ll reach the Palmente pass (1640m) crossing an ancient mule track. There the eastern coast emerges, offering a wide panorama of the Diana and Urbinu ponds. Finally we’ll descend to the Vizzavona forest and return to Ajaccio. **Duration: 5 hours / Positive vertical drop: 220 m / Negative vertical drop: -890 m / Distance: 15.3 km**

Corsica GR20 Trek via the south route from Bavella to Vizzavona

**Between the Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian seas, the mountains of Corsica boast a huge variety of atmospheres and landscapes. This track I propose offers the advantage of "tasting" this richness. We will go through all stages of vegetation. Indeed, from the high peaks (alpine and minerals) to the sea of the Gulf of Porto (UNESCO heritage site).**

This hike will allow you to discover mountain villages, rivers with water of high purity (bathing almost daily!), altitude lakes, sheepfolds, the GR 20, chestnut trees, old Genoese bridges, Mediterranean maquis… Enough to leave with a multitude of memories and scents.

I will help you discover these spaces with passion. Of course I will help you in difficult passages for you to reach the wildest parts of the island.

The roads inside Niolu lead us into the Niolu valley. First steps on the mule paths to the Genoese bridge Muriccioli. By ancient mountain crop fields and gardens we arrive “to the village”.

We go up the Colga valley to Ninu Lake, free horse heaven, one of the “pearls” of the Corsican mountain. Picnic on the vast lawns bordering the lake (I pozzi). Returning, from “Bocca a Reta”, the view over the sea and the Gulf of Sagone is stunning.

We walk on the GR 20, in the heart of the Paglia Orba volcanic massif. Stop at the sheepfolds and cooling under the Radule waterfalls .

This hike takes us on the western slopes of the island. We cross the Vergio pass and start our slow descent to the sea in the shade of Laricci pines. We stop at the shores of natural pools of Aïtone, clear bowls of this mountain stream. We reach the lively village of Evisa by the “Chemin du châtaignier”.

By an old cobbled path we descend to the red granite show the Gorges of the Spelunca. Mountain vegetation gradually gives way to the Mediterranean species. Finally we arrive in Ota.

We follow a while the Mare e Monti path, then we descend to the sea. Remarkable viewpoint of the Calanche de Piana, the Gulf of Porto and the Scandola Nature Reserve. This trail through the bush leads to the beach of Porto, the final point of our journey on foot. By early afternoon, return to Ajaccio.

In the morning, we’ll cross the famous Cirque de la Solitude. It is the most technical passage of the GR20. Chains and ladders allow us to cross the most difficult passages. We will advance in the heart of the highest peaks of the island. Finally, we will reach the Verghju Pass.  
Night at the Castel di Vergio lodge.

Ascu – Vergio

On this varied and very scenic stage,  we will head to the shores of Ninu Lake, and then to the Camputile plateau. Then, we will gain the Capitellu notch and descend to the Grotelle sheepfold through the lakes variant.

Vergio – Grotelle

This is a difficult day. Through the wild Cascade Valley, we will find **the GR20** at the  Rinosu Pass. We will go through the Petra Piana refuge, and by a spectacular ridge path, we’ll reach the Onda refuge where we will enjoy a delicious cannelloni lunch. Later, we will ascend to the Muratellu notch before taking the long descent towards the Vizzavona Pass.  
Night at the Monte d’Oro gîte.  
Duration: 8:30 hours

Grotelle – Vizzavona

A recovery stage. This stage takes place on the rolling terrain of an old path of the mountainside. In the shade of Larici pines and beeches, we will walk through many summer sheepfolds.

Vizzavona – Verde Pass

After the steep climb to Bocca di l’Oru, we will run by the long ridge that leads us to the Cuscionu plateau. Varied terrains and panoramic views are the highlights of day 6.

Verde Pass – Bassetta

After crossing the fields of Cuscionu and going up the softly shaped Incudine,  we will encounter the rugged figure of the Aiguilles de Bavella. Crossing it by the Alpine variant is a strong moment of the GR. After a final descent, we will reach the Bavella Pass, the end of our trip at the heart of the Corsican mountains.
