I was born in Tokyo and grew up skiing in Hakuba, Japan. Throughout the years, I have visited Alaska, Peru, Patagonia, New Zealand, Nepal and Canada for winter climbing and backcountry snowboarding.

In 2012, I became the first Japanese person to pass the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides's ski guiding course on a Snowboard. I have been guiding in Japan (Hakuba Nagano and Mt. Fuji), New Zealand and Canada for over 15 years.

Located about an hour outside of the **Nagano Prefecture**, **Hakuba** is an ideal destination for **backcountry skiing in Japan**. Nestled between powdered mountains and steep inclines, **Hakuba** sits inside of the idyllic **Chubu Sangaku National Park**, and offers over **12 meters of powder** in some parts.

This trip is particularly special because you will not only receive a **guided tour of Hakuba**, but also because one of our instructors will be using **techniques derived from the art of zen practice.** Our instructor will guide you on the mountain, providing you with safety instructions and general tips, you will feel the transcendence of calm. More still, should you be adventurous and want to **hike** a little, you will find yourself at the bowls of **Happo**, which ebb along the beautiful **north-facing slopes of Mt. Karamatsu.**

This adventure is organized as a **private trip,** and has an individualized **guide ratio of 6:1.** And **Hakuba** offers a **variety of route options**, which we will select based on your **skill level.** I am certified snowboard guide as well, so snowboarders/splitboarders are also welcome!

1-day Backcountry Ski Tour in Hakuba, Japan

**Mount Fuji,** located about 100km southwest of the capital Tokyo, is Japan’s highest peak and a spectacular natural phenomenon. At 3,766m of altitude, it is the second-highest island peak in Asia and the views from its summit are unforgettable.

Featured within Japanese mythology, this dormant volcano is one of the ‘three holy mountains’. Mt Fuji is heavily intertwined with Japanese culture. Here’s your chance to explore this magnificent wonder in the company of a local and internationally certified mountain guide in the early season.  
  
We will meet in **Gotenba City.** It is on the southeastern flank of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture and then head for the mountain. The guests are required to stay in Gotenba the night before.  
  
We will begin hiking between 5 to 7 am, The one-day climb is a 7-9 hour round-trip hike and is best suited for experienced hikers and those who regularly exercise, but is not recommended for inexperienced hikers or those who are not confident in their fitness.  
  
We usually take the Fujinomiya route, which is a relatively short route. It takes 5-6 hours to reach the summit. You will get some truly amazing photos from the summit, and 360-degree panoramics that will be hard to match.  
  
We will arrive back down to the 5th station around 4 pm and then we should arrive at Gotenba around 6 pm.

**Mt.Fuji,** which is crowded in July and August, is a very quiet world in May and June, when the snow still remains, and only experienced mountain climbers can reach the summit. Here’s your chance to explore this magnificent wonder in the company of a local and internationally certified mountain guide in early season.  
  
We will meet in **Gotenba city.** It is on the southeastern flank of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture, and then head for the mountain. The guests are required to stay in Gotenba on the night before.  
  
We will meet in Gonteba or Fujiyoshida city at 4am, and begin hiking at between 5am to 7am. The one-day climb is a 7-9 hour round-trip hike and it is recommended for experienced mountaineers and those who regularly exercise, rather than for inexperienced hikers or those who are not confident in their fitness. Guests must have experience using mountaineering equipment such as ice axes and crampons beforehand.  
  
We usually take the Fujinomiya route, which is a relatively short route. It takes 5-6 hours to reach the summit. This 3-day trek I will take you on leads us in to the heart of the southern Yatsugatake Mountains, near Tokyo, Japan, a region known throughout the country for its hiking and trekking, its sweeping panoramic views which rival that of Mt Fuji, and the diversity of its flora and fauna, with **the blooming of alpine flowers in Summer providing an amazing spectacle.**

The Yatsugatake Mountains are located just a 3 hour drive from Tokyo, and **local legend has it that they were once higher than the world-famous Mt Fuji**, before the goddess of Mt Fuji tore them down in a jealous rage to their current height.

We begin the trip on the first day in Shinjyuku, Tokyo, before heading to the town we will base ourselves in, Yatsugatake. The rest of the first day is spent hiking up to **our hut where we will stay the night, Seinengoya, renowned for its high quality food and sake.**

The second day is very long, as we arise at 5am to prepare for 8-9 hours of hiking across 5 peaks, providing epic views over the land, before staying at our second hut, Honzawakosen, containing **the highest outdoor onsen (hot spring) in the country**, ensuring a relaxing and refreshing night.

The final day is spent hiking to Shibuno-yu, also containing a spectacular onsen, before we head back to Tokyo in the afternoon.

Along the way we might be lucky enough to encounter some of the animals that inhabit the area such as flying **squirrels, deer, Japanese serows, foxes and bears**, and the aforementioned alpine flowers ensure you will be constantly reaching for your camera.

By the end of the trip you will hopefully have fallen in love with this very pleasant region and increased your desire to return.

Meet at Shinjyuku, Tokyo. 3 hours drive to the base town of Yatsugatake. Then we take a taxi to the trailhead. It is a good 4 hrs hiking to Seinengoya-hut. The hut is very famous for its foods and variety of good Sake!

Meet and trek

Wake up at 5am, breakfast then start hiking. It is 8-9 hrs hiking connecting 5 peaks. We stay at Honzawakosen-hut. This is a highest onsen-hut in the country.

Trek

Wake up at 5am, breakfast then start hiking. It is 5 hrs hiking to Shibuno-yu which is the main goal of this trip. Shibuno-yu is another beautiful natural onsen. Shower off the sweat and soak in the natural onsen before going back to Tokyo.

Bask in the serene realm of **Mt Fuji during its more peaceful season in May and June.** Unlike the bustling crowds that flock to its summit in July and August, this tranquil period is reserved for seasoned mountaineers who possess the expertise necessary to conquer its challenging terrain.

Our expedition will start from either the delightful city of Gotenba, located on the southeastern flank of the majestic Mount Fuji, or the scenic town of Fujiyoshida, nestled at the base of the mountain in Yamanashi Prefecture. From there, we will embark on our journey towards the majestic Mt. Fuji.

We will meet at the break of dawn to start our hiking adventure, aiming to start between the hours of 5 and 7 am. Our preferred path is the **Fujinomiya route, known for its relatively shorter duration**. This route typically takes approximately 5–6 hours to reach the summit.

From the summit, you will capture **breathtaking photographs that offer unrivaled beauty**—a 360-degree panoramic view that is difficult to surpass. On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction and witness **Mount Asama, Mount Bandai, and Mount Hakusan** in all their splendor.

Our descent will bring us back to the 5th station at approximately 4 pm, and from there, we anticipate reaching Gotenba around 6 pm.
