Day 1: Itoigawa to Mount Hakuba

Schedule: 6:00 – Meet at Itoigawa Station 6:20 – Bus departs to Renge Onsen Trailhead (schedule may vary) 7:55 – Arrive at Renge Onsen Trailhead (Alt: 1,469 m / 4,822 ft) Bus fare: JPY 1,790 per person Bus timetable: https://www.marukei-g.com/files/libs/5028/202405281017402720.pdf

Hiking: Start: 8:10 from Renge Onsen (Alt: 1,469 m / 4,822 ft) Distance: 10.2 km (~6.3 miles) Duration: ~7 hrs 20 min Elevation Gain: 1,462 m / 4,797 ft Elevation Loss: 100 m / 328 ft 15:20 – Summit Mount Hakuba (Alt: 2,932 m / 9,619 ft) 15:30 – Arrive at Hakuba Sanso Hut (Alt: 2,826 m / 9,272 ft)

Accommodation: Hakuba Sanso Hut JPY 16,500 per person (includes dinner, breakfast, and bento lunch)

Day 2: Hakuba Sanso to Hakuba Yari Onsen 

Schedule: 7:00 – Depart from Hakuba Sanso Hut (Alt: 2,826 m / 9,272 ft) 8:15 – Mount Shakushi (Alt: 2,812 m / 9,226 ft) 9:15 – Mount Yarigatake (Alt: 2,903 m / 9,525 ft) 12:05 – Arrive at Hakuba Yari Onsen Hut (Alt: 2,028 m / 6,654 ft)

Hiking: Distance: 5.6 km (~3.5 miles) Duration: ~5 hrs 10 min Elevation Gain: 410 m / 1,345 ft Elevation Loss: 803 m / 2,635 ft

Accommodation: Hakuba Yari Onsen Hut JPY 16,000 per person (includes dinner and breakfast) Optional bento lunch: JPY 1,500

Day 3: Descent to Sarukura

Schedule: 7:00 – Depart from Hakuba Yari Onsen Hut (Alt: 2,028 m / 6,654 ft) 10:40 – Arrive at Sarukura (Alt: 1,240 m / 4,068 ft)

Hiking: Distance: 5.8 km (~3.6 miles) Duration: ~4 hrs Elevation Gain: 0 m / 0 ft Elevation Loss: 850 m / 2,789 ft

Participants who identify as "moderate" hikers or those willing to train and prepare for this level of physical activity are encouraged to join this trip.

Beginner

  • Little to no hiking experience within the past 6 months.
  • Comfortable hiking on mostly flat terrain at a slower-than-average pace.

Moderate

  • Regular hiking experience.
  • Capable of hiking for up to 6 hours per day on trails with moderate inclines and descents, maintaining an average pace.

Advanced

  • Extensive hiking experience, including long-distance hikes within the past few months.
  • Frequent hiker with the ability to handle up to 12 hours of hiking per day.
  • Comfortable navigating significant elevation gains and losses while maintaining an above-average pace.
