On this day you’ll arrive and have some free time before the activities of the week kick off the following day.
We’ll spend our first day walking near the Caniçal Tunnel in the southern park of the island. The walkway leads us up over Machico and we’ll get great views of the city. We’ll explore traditional farmlands and enjoy beautiful scenery along the way. We’ll spend roughly 10 km walking over four hours.
On day three we’ll spend around 5.5 hours walking and we’ll cover about 16 km. We’ll start with a transfer to Queimadas Park. We’ll walk following the levadas and immerse ourselves in this lush forestland. This levada was constructed in the 18th century to transport water down from the mountain. On this walk we’ll come across waterfalls, ferns and tunnels that were once excavated by hand.
Day four will be extra special as we’ll ride on horseback along the secret paths to Santo da Serra, which sits at 900m high.
On day 5 we’ll leave from the Bay D’ Abra on foot and observe dikes, minerals and the stunning colours of the landscapes. The peninsula is actually a partial nature reserve and we’ll also make our way to the Desembarcadouro Islet which is a full nature reserve. You can end the day with views of the “Deserted Islands” and Porto Santo island before resting at or diving into the Sardinhas Bay.
By the end, we’ll have covered 8kms over the course of the day.
We’ll start our day 6 activities at Achada do Teixeira. From there we’ll walk to Pico Ruivo at 1862 mt. This is the highest peak on the island and from the top you’ll get some awesome views of the island. After we descend we’ll pass by the “Standing Man” a sculpture made from basaltic rock. Our last stop of the day will be the famous traditional houses in Santana.
Your last day will be a fun-filled one. We’ll start with a visit to the farmers market, Mercado dos Lavradores. Here you’ll be able to take in the beautiful fresh produce and browse local handcraft shops. We’ll then explore charming Santa Maria Street, one of the oldest streets in Funchal. From there we’ll jump straight on a cable car to Monte. At the top we’ll visit the Igreja do Monte, a 19th century church. To get down we’ll take one of the traditional wicker baskets directed by a guide. This is a fun experience you do not want to miss!
After lunch we’ll sail around the south coast of the island on a catamaran. We may even see dolphins, whales, and giant tortoises. This is the perfect way to wind down your trip. Finally, when we approach Cabo Girão you’ll be able to jump out for a swim.
You’ll have some free time before you leave on the last day.
