Description

Venture on the journey of a lifetime to the Mount Everest Base Camp! Witness amazing vistas of the snow-capped peaks and experience unlimited thrill as you stride past alpine lakes, massive glaciers and milky white rivers on this 16-day trek in the Himalayas!

Besides jaw-dropping views, you’ll also get a glimpse of the Sherpa culture as you ascend narrow trails studded by colorful Buddhist flags, beautiful prayer wheels and well wishes for the climbers.

We’ll begin this trip from the capital city of Kathmandu by taking a 40 minutes flight to Lukla. The journey over the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas is one of the most scenic flights in the world!

After reaching Lukla, we’ll proceed towards Namche Bazaar, a Sherpa village that has been the gateway to the Everest ever since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay put their first steps on the peak. Continuing our hike through the villages of Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Duglha, we’ll reach Gorak Shep, our last stop.

Our much-awaited hike to the Everest Base Camp will begin on the 10th day, from Gorak Shep. You’ll have ample time for acclimatization before attempting this leg of the journey. And once you reach the Base Camp, you’ll feel a true sense of accomplishment!

It is awe-inspiring to witness the highest peak in the world from such proximity! You’ll be spellbound by the outstanding views of the Everest, the mighty Khumbu glacier and the neighboring peaks of Nuptse, Khumbuste and Pumori.

Finally, before we head back, we’ll trek to Kala Patthar (5,645m), the highest point of the trek to capture even more amazing sights of the peak.

Thereafter, we will head back to Kathmandu, via Namche Bazaar and board yet another mesmerizing flight from Lukla.

After a farewell dinner in Kathmandu, you’ll spend the remaining days exploring the medieval Hindu temples and beautiful Buddhist monasteries in the city.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m), transfer to hotel, welcome dinner

Airport transfers from Tribhuwan International Airport to your hotel in Kathmandu. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 2: Fly to Lukla, trek to Phakding (2,651m/8,700ft): 40 minutes flight; 8km, 3 – 4 hours trek

Start with a scenic flight to Lukla. Meet the rest of the team there and begin our trek. Descend towards Cheplung village. At Cheplung we get to see beautiful views of Mt. Khumbila(5761m) also, known as “God of Khumbu”, a sacred mountain which has never been climbed. Continue towards Phakding. Overnight in Phakding.

Day 3: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,438m/11,280 ft): 11km, 5 – 6 hours

Ascend on a steep trail and cross multiple suspension bridges over the Dudhkoshi river. Pass through pine forests and small villages along the way. Continue up north the Benkar valley and pass through the Chumoa and Monjo villages. Reach the Everest National Park entrance gate at Jorsalle. All climbing passes are checked and verified here. Witness spectacular views of the snow-clad mountain. Next, we’ll climb a steep incline to reach the Hillary bridge, the longest and the highest for the day. Continue on a steep path leading up to Namche Bazaar.

Namche Bazaar is a famous town in the region. It is the starting point for all expeditions in the Everest region. It is a historic town with a rich culture and beautiful market selling everything from Tibetan artifacts to trekking and climbing equipment. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 4: Namche Bazaar: Rest day

This day is primarily meant for an acclimatization trek to a higher altitude and then back to Namche.  In a span of around 48 hours, you will have had climbed up to 11,290 ft / 3,440 m at Namche from of 4,600 ft / 1,400 m at Kathmandu.

We will hike up to a Khumjung, a vibrant Sherpa village. Visit Hillary School and Khumjung Gompa monastery.  Learn more about the Sherpa culture, taste local cuisines, and observe the never-tiring views of the Himalayas and head back to Namche. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 5: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,870m/12,694ft): 10km, 5- 6 hours

Trek to Tengoche monastery, a significant monastery at Tengboche village. Witness fantastic views of pines, azaleas and colourful mountain rhododendrons. Get excellent views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku from here!

Starting on an easy trail, the path becomes steep by the end of the journey. Continue to reach Tengboche. Overnight in Tengboche.

Day 6: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4,360 m/14,300 ft): 9km, 5 – 6 hours

Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche,  one of the favorite treks of explorers. Experience outstanding views of Mount Everest.

Hike a moderate trail with river crossings and wooden bridges. Pass through lush forests of birch, confer and rhododendron trees. Descend to Debuche and cross the Imja River. Continue towards Pangboche through the upper Pangboche trail. See the Pangboche Monastery along the way.  Trek a picturesque path to reach Dingboche. Overnight at Dingboche.

Day 7: Dingboche: Day Rest

Spend a day acclimatizing in Dingboche. Ascend a ridge and come back. Witness spectacular views of Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu peaks. View the snow-clad mountains rising above the Khumbu Khola Valley, particularly Lobuche West, Lobuche East and Lhotse. The spot also offers stunning views of the Imja Khola Valley. Overnight at Dingboche.

Day 8: Trek from Dingboche to Duglha (4,600 m/15,090 ft): 4km, 3 – 4 hours

It is a short walk from Dingboche to Duglha. With an increasing altitude, the speed slows down. We’ll see the campsite used for the first successful Everest Expedition of 1953. Witness amazing sight of Mt. Pumori during our journey. Continue on a narrow trail to reach Duglha. You’ll see numerous strands of prayer flags hung across the valley. We can hike to a nearby glacier to get a great view of Ama Dablam. Overnight in Duglha.

Day 9: Trek from Duglha to Lobuche (4940 m/16,207ft): 4km , 2 – 4 hours

Witness exceptional views of Nuptse peak. Visit Everest memorial site and pay our respect to the fallen climbers. The journey to Lobuche begins with a demanding two-hour hike to the Khumbu Glacier. Witness outstanding views of Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori and Mahalangur Himal. Finally, we’ll walk towards Lobuche village. Overnight in Lobuche.

Day 10: Trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5170 m/16,961ft), visit Everest Base Camp (5364 m/17,594 ft): 13km, 6-7 hours

We move along the Khumbu glacier on a tough trail towards Gorak Shep. Gorak Shep is a frozen lakebed covered with sand and it feels as if we are walking on a beach!

From here, ascend a rocky trail and glacial paths to reach the Base Camp. You’ll feel exhilarated here! See the mighty Khumbu Icefall and stunning views of the Himalayan peak. Next, we head back to Gorak Shep. Overnight in Gorak Shep.

Day 11: Trek from Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar (5,545m/18,192ft) to Pherice (4,288m/14,070ft): 16km, 7-8 hours

Ascend a slope admiring great views of Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse mountains to reach Kala Patthar. It is a famous landmark which means ‘black rock’. This viewpoint offers the glorious views of Mount Everest.  After spending some time at Kala Patthar, head back to Gorak Shep and continue further to Pheriche. Pheriche is small Sherpa village,  popular for the Tshola Tsho Lake. Overnight in Pheriche.

Day 12: Trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,280 ft): 20km, 6 – 7 hours

Descend down 2,000 feet with occasional ups and downs. Descend through rhododendron, juniper and pine forests crossing the Dudh Koshi river. Head down to Sansa to see amazing vistas of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Nuptse mountains, to finally reach Namche Bazaar. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.

Day 13: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860m/9,186ft): 19km, 6 – 7 hours

Head back from Namche to Lukla. Descending a rocky path, we’ll cross several suspensions bridges and pass by many monasteries to reach Lukla. Enjoy your last day in the mountains! Overnight in Lukla.

Day 14: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu

Catch an early morning flight to Kathmandu to celebrate and do some last-minute souvenir shopping! Check out tourist attractions in Kathmandu. Enjoy a farewell dinner and stay overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 15: Stay in Kathmandu

Relax in Kathmandu and explore the city. This extra day provides room in case our flight gets delayed due to poor weather condition.

More info

Total distance covered during the trek: 130 km roundtrip. Requires 6-7 hours of hiking everyday.

It is recommended that you train yourself 6-8 weeks before the trip. Take long walks, go for hikes or swim regularly. Squats with strength training is a good idea to prepare. It is easy for backpackers, hikers, and people who generally remain active.

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice.
