Description

Come visit one of the most beautiful places in the Western United States and climb across the vast desert wilderness of Joshua Tree National Park! This guided rock climbing program focuses on the fundamentals of the sport and provides practical instruction on basic routes to more complex ascents for intrepid climbers!

Located in southern California roughly two and a half hours east of Los Angeles, Joshua Tree National Park is a symbolic desert destination for tourists and travelers, notably outdoor athletes who want first-hand experience on its ancient geology. The park, home to multiple mountain ranges and a couple of deserts, is slightly larger than the entire state of Rhode Island. The perfect place for an unforgettable rock climbing expedition!

Your program places you in the middle of this stunning landscape, ascending an array of terrain and climbing routes. From boulders and basic single-pitch lines to complex multi-pitch climbs, there is something for every level, shape, and size in Joshua Tree. Different surface climbs include cracks, slabs, roofs, and chimneys, just to name a few. Our options are endless on the abundant and unique rock formations.

Beginning early in the morning from our offices in Joshua Tree, we will head to our climbing location and spend a full day perusing the rocks and experiencing the wilderness. There are options deep into the park that necessitate an hour long hike, or we can start pitching the minute we step out of the car. The goal is to spend seven to eight hours taking on the objectives and challenges that suit your needs and abilities.

This program is open to all types of rock climber, whether you are a beginner or a grizzled veteran. Let me know what you are looking for in a perfect day climb, and we will tailor a trip that is made just for you. A general fitness and understanding of the physical nature of rock climbing are the only prerequisites.

Instruction will include climbing technique and movement on the rock, proper equipment use and storage, safety while climbing, and so much more. You will finish the day with a wealth of new information to use on your next climbs. Pro tip: keep your eyes peeled for a classic desert sunset – another one of the remarkable features of this fascinating location.

Rock Climbing Instructor

Seth, the owner of Mojave Guides, has been a Joshua Tree resident since the Fall of 2003 to remain close to the National Park and its exceptional rock climbing.

His climbing career began about 12 years ago while living in Jackson Hole, WY. Obsessed from the beginning, he started to develop his skill set and gain experience the way good climbers do, by rock climbing!

By 2008 he had visited most of the famous climbing areas of the US and earned his first professional certification with the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA). Seth began his guiding career the same year, as a Trip Leader for Indiana Universities' Outdoor Adventures.

In 2010 he received an outdoor recreation and natural resource management degree from I.U. with a focus on rock climbing (yes, you can get a university degree for rock climbing!).

In 2013, following an intensive training period and subsequent 6-day exam, he was awarded the AMGA Rock Instructor Certification. This certification allows him to guide pretty much anything you want to climb in the park!

Today, Seth has worked with thousands of clients, from 5-year-olds to 75-year-olds through 10 different organizations based in 7 states.

Solo female climber here and had a great time out on the rocks with Seth as my guide. Appreciated his flexibility, laid-back (but still risk averse) style. I suspect he's able to adapt to all climber types and personalities. I can't wait to make it back (hopefully with a group of friends) as I know my next guided experience with Seth will be just as amazing!

Nate was a fantastic guide for our full day of rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park. He was patient and encouraged us to step outside our comfort zones. What an amazing experience. I recommend the full day if you can..it was totally worth it!
