Description

Would you like to learn all the skills you need to start planning your own ski tours? Then this 2 1/2-day ski touring course in Sweden is perfect for you.

This course takes place in Jämtland, in the Åre ski area. It is perfect for those who want to take their skiing to the next level, and learn how to plan and carry out short easy ski touring programs, which could lead to future, more complex ones.

Each day we will have both an indoor explanation and an outdoor practice. Furthermore, we will work on different aspects of ski touring and plan our itinerary depending on the group level and skillset, as well as on the weather.

You don’t need to be an expert skier to join this course, however, we do suggest that you have some prior skiing experience. Furthermore, keep in mind that we will spend the day out in the mountains, so you will need to have an adequate fitness level. Of course, I will be there to help and guide you every step of the way.

So, are you ready to learn ski touring skills for your adventures in the snow? Then contact me and let me share my knowledge with you!

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Intro.

Our first ski touring course day begins in the afternoon. This will give you plenty of time to arrive safely, either by car or train. We will begin indoors and discuss the course plan, then we will head outdoors and talk about avalanche safety before a small rescue exercise. After this easygoing intro, we will be ready for the two next days.

Day 2: Training day and fun runs

We will start the day indoors with a quick chat about the plan for the day, the avalanche forecast, and the weather. After, we will head out into the mountains to train efficiency when moving on skis.

The course then continues with topics related to regulating heat and adapting to the conditions. We will also give you the best instructions on how to make the transitions from walking to skiing to walking as this is something a lot of people struggle with – often when you are the most exposed.

For lunch, we will dig ourselves a small shelter and in the afternoon, we will aim for some nice ski runs in the best snow conditions of the day.

Day 3: Tour Planning Theory and Practice

The last day of the course starts with one or two hours of indoor theory, where we will cover tour planning from scratch. Everyone will have the chance to learn how to make a plan on the basis of a system. We will also discuss human factors and often it is this morning time that provides very important tools for future trip planning. It usually ends in a discussion and gives many thoughts to practice out on the mountain.

Once outside, we will continue where we left off the day before and continue to train tour planning in practice. Common course elements are changes between skinning and skiing, kick-turns, as well as orientation and choice of paths.

If we have enough time, we will also try to fit in some training, with the chance to work on whatever you feel you need – and of course great skiing.

We conclude with a brief rehearsal and course evaluation.

Equipment you will need to bring

Clothes depending on the weather. (Preferably thin gloves, shell jacket with a hood, neck warmer, warm hat and ski socks. Avoid clothes made of cotton).

Mountain Leader

Some say they started with their outdoor adventures at a certain stage in life - I simply never stopped. A childhood spent outdoors led me to the career of guiding. 3 years of education in Vadstena with the Leadership and Outdoor program and another 1½ years to become a Wilderness and Adventure guide at Campus Åre.

Since 2013 I have been self-employed and working as a freelance mountain leader all over Scandinavia and I am happy to call it my home. I have also made sure to invest in further education such as 80 hours first aid training - Wilderness First Responder (NOLS), avalanche course PRO 2 through SVELAV and I carry the National Award for Mountain Leaders to mention a few.

On top of this, I make sure to put my skills to good use as a Chairman of the Swedish Mountain Leader Organisation, a delegate to UIMLA, and as a board member of the Mountain Safety Council of Sweden. I am also helping the Industry Organisation of Sustainable Snowmobile Tourism as an expert member in their task of building a guide training. Previous work also includes training Mountain Leaders and setting up operation guidelines and safety plans for other guiding companies.

My biggest passion is helping others access wild places and showing them the best parts of outdoor adventure. I will be happy to share my knowledge and guide you especially in the Scandinavian Mountain Range which stretches 1700 kilometers on the border between Sweden and Norway.
