Description

Tocllaraju is one of Peru’s most iconic mountains. It rises at 6,032 meters. Famous for its unique triangular shape, it stands out in the Ishinca valley. Join me on this 5-day guided ascent to reach its summit.

We’ll be able to distinguish this majestic mountain starting at its base camp. Its beautiful shape has granted it fame. However, it is also known because of a snow formation in the shape of a mushroom very close to the mountain. The name Tocllaraju comes from a quechua word that means snow trap. And once you get to see this beautiful peak up close, you feel nothing else but the desire to reach its top.

The itinerary I propose is varied. The first day we’ll head towards Pashpa in the direction of the Ishinca Valley. Then, after about 2 hours, we’ll arrive at the National Park’s control post. Thereupon we’ll get to the Ishinca’s base camp, where we’ll camp for the night.

Day two will be equally amazing, since it will be day in which we reach the ice and snow level. We will cross a dazzling glacier, for which we’ll need to gear up until we arrive at high camp. Once there, we will be rewarded by breathtaking sceneries of Ishinca and Aquilpo.

On day three we will attempt to stand at the top of Tocllaraju leaving camp one at 2:00 am, so we get a hypnotizing sunset on the way to the summit. Then, next day, we’ll take it easy, trekking for about 4 o 5 hours back to base camp. Finally on day five, we’ll head back to Huaraz from where we departed.
