Join Matjaz, a ZGVS certified mountain guide, on a unique experience exploring the underwater world of an old mine by kayak.
Kayak 700m beneath the Earth’s surface
Immerse yourself in the underground world of a mine
Learn the history behind a 16th century mine
Come with me on an unforgettable underground mine adventure in the Mežica Mines. The mines are 700m under the earth’s surface and we’re going to explore this underground world in a kayak.
I’ll pick you up in morning in Bled, and we’ll drive to Mežica, a small town on the Austrian border home to the Podzemlje Pece Mines. The drive will take around two hours. When we arrive, we’ll take a traditional mining train through 3.5km of tunnels to the Unionski Vpadnik slope mine. From there, we’ll walk a bit deeper into the mine before getting set up with all our kayaking equipment.
Then things get even more interesting. Once in the kayak, you can explore at your own pace and enjoy the peaceful silence of being 700m underground. We’ll pass submerged passages and stone monuments that date back to the 16th century. Pretty cool, right?
Once we’ve finished kayaking, we’ll explore on foot and learn all about the history of the mine. We’ll take the train back to the start and, to give you the full experience, we’ll eat a classic miners lunch. We’ll finish the trip with some time in the onsite museum before I drop you back to your hotel in the afternoon. This trip lasts eight hours in total.
For this trip, you’ll need to bring your passport, walking shoes and warm sporty clothes (it gets pretty cold down there, think: 10°C). There is also a minimum age requirement of 10 years old and a minimum height requirement of 150cm or 4ft. 9”.

I’m a certified IFMGA mountain guide and canyoning guide living in the small and famous town of Bled, in Slovenia.
I started rock climbing at the age of 5. From that time on, the mountains became my playground. During my childhood, I took part in many rock climbing competitions. When I was 12, my twin brother and I did our first multi-pitch climb on a 350 m wall.
By the age of 16, I started competing in ice climbing world cups and later on skydiving junior world cups. In fact, in 2008 I became the world champion at the UIAA Ice Climbing Overall Ranking in speed ice climbing.
I climbed in many different countries like Peru, South Korea, Switzerland, France and Italy. However, Slovenia is the place I like the most.
Among other significant achievements, I did the first winter ascent (from the bottom of the wall) in Sphinx, the most difficult route in the mythical North Face of Mt Triglav. Besides, I got the first place for males at the IFMGA International mountain guide climbing championship in 2017.
I like sharing moments with people, especially in mountains. Feel free to join me in the highest mountains, steepest walls and many other Alpine wonders. I’m flexible, so we can also research places in other countries worldwide. Deep canyons, emerald rivers, beautiful mountains, great people, a good laugh, you name it.
I look forward to meeting you!

Our guide was Mitja Drinavec (not Matevz Vukotic), he was very nice and responsible during the entire trip. Thank you for the great experience.

That was not the guide, to begin with. It was a very very young woman. She was not very communicative, although she replied all the questions asked by the people seating in the front row. I, at the rear, have little opportunity to actually ear anything that it was said. Even less to ask myself The tour was not so bad but obviously some stops were far more interesting than others. What I found really annoying was the company of two people (clearly not customers) who shared the tour with us, speaking one another in their language as if they were alone in the van. Customers and friends (colleagues?) should be kept apart.

Hi, We had a great climb with Matevz on the Hanz route - we knew we were in good hands and he kept a good pace and made sure we were taken care of on the way up. The climb was quite steep and a little scary but it helped knowing we were secured by a rope so an exhilirating day overall. We loved it!

Our day with Jan and Youna (I\'m definitely spelling their names wrong, sorry) went very well, he made sure to check our skill level and chose climbs based on it. He also offered tips on how to tackle climbs and was very attentive to our safety. A great plus is helping us take photos with his amazing camera. Great day out on the rocks!

Thank you so much for making this arguably the best part of our 2 week stay in Slovenia. We highly recommend Altitude Adventures. All the staff are friendly and the guides were experienced, encouraging and a pleasure to be around. We were given loads of pictures and the gear was comfortable. Thanks again.

Nice guy. We were unable to complete the hike due to personal reasons. But Matevz was understanding and did not tell us what to do. Instead he offered the facts and gave us options, which was the right way to do so. We ended up doing alternative activities on second day, which was a nice way to replace the 2 day itinerary.
