Join an Upper Mustang Trek and enjoy exploring the “Grand Canyon of the Himalayas” on an amazing 16-day adventure!

Upper Mustang is a remote region of Nepal with strong Tibetan influence. On this 16-day trek, you will have the chance to explore the beautiful landscapes of the region, while delving deep into its cultural and spiritual traditions and landmarks.

The adventure begins in Kathmandu, where we will pick you up and drop you off. From there, we will have a chance to explore some of Nepal’s most famous landmarks and then, we will head to the Upper Mustang region. We will stop at local villages and temples, and you will get a full feel of the region’s unique mystique. Furthermore, on the way, you will catch sight of some of the Himalayas’ most stunning mountains.  Additionally, you will have the chance to celebrate your adventure with a traditional dinner and dance on the last day. Keep in mind that this is not a technical trek. However, a good fitness level is required, as we will spend 5 to 6 hours trekking per day, and sometimes in rugged terrain. Of course, we will be happy to assist and guide you every step of the way.

3-star Catagory hotel in Kathmandu and Pokhara with Breakfast.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1300m)

You will land at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu. We will pick you up and drop you off at the respective hotel. After some rest, we will head out for an evening walk in a nearby market. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 2: Sightseeing Kathmandu Valley and trek Preparation

After morning breakfast, we will head out for a Day tour of Kathmandu valley. You’ll explore different UNESCO world heritage sites including Pashupatinath temple, Kathmandu Darbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, and many more.  After getting to know the Nepalese culture, we will head back to the hotel for further preparation for the trek. Your guide will help you. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 3: Kathmandu – Pokhara (823m): 6-7 hrs

After breakfast, we will head towards one of the most charismatic cities in all of Nepal, Pokhara. The place is full of delightful places, fresh air with a close view of the snow-capped mountains. Pokhara is also popular for its lakes, mountains, paragliding, and boating. You can enjoy boating in Phewa Lake and also taste some delicious local street foods. Overnight at a hotel in Pokhara.

Day 4: Pokhara – Jomsom, and Trek to Kagbeni (2858m): 20min flight, 3-4 hrs trek

In the early morning, we will fly from Pokhara to Jomsom. Jomsom is the district headquarter of Mustang. It is a large and beautiful village famous for its tasty apples. After we land, we will follow the bank of Kali Gandaki River, upstream about 3hrs, witnessing the beautiful views until we reach Ekley-Bhatti village. After some rest, we will head to Kagbeni which is located on the bank of two rivers. It’s a medieval settlement at the crossroads of the ancient trade route between India and Tibet. Overnight at Redhouse lodge, Kagbeni.

Day 5: Kagbeni – Chele (3035m): 5-6 hrs

The trek begins alongside the Kaligandaki and over some hills to Tangbe village. Amazing houses with white walls, red doors, and beautiful windows line the way. Despite having narrow streets, we can still see the surrounding mountains around the village. We will continue to walk along the path and mountain ridge until we reach Chele village. Overnight in Chele.

Day 6: Chele – Gelling (3475m) 6-7 hrs

Resuming our trek after morning breakfast, we will enter the Buddhist region beyond Chele. Headed above lines of the tree and small hills crossing the suspended bridge of the Ghyakar River to Ghyakar. Continue up to cross the Chele La (3630m) and Samar (3620m). Ascend up to Gehling pass to reach Bhena (3860m) and then to Yamdo (3920m). From there, we’ll head to the Yamdo La Pass (4010m) and continue to Shyangmochen. It’s an hour or so of a gradual walk to reach Gelling. Overnight in Gelling.

Day 7: Gelling – Tsarang (3575m): 6-7 hrs

We will move from Gelling to Tsarang, up to the center of the valley passing Nyi La (4020m), a steep descent will take us to Ghemi. Ghemi is the third-largest village in Upper Mustang. Crossing the Tangmar River, we will reach a valley that continues up to Choya La (3870m). You will catch sight of the spectacular views of Tilicho, Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Damodar Cluster. Trek downhill to reach the second largest town of Tsarang. Overnight in Tsarang.

Day 8: Tsarang – Lo Manthang (3840m): 4-5 hrs

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we’ll explore the Tsarang village and the natural beauty surrounding it. A short tour will lead us to a Gompa (Buddhist temple) and many small Chortens. We will continue then to Lo Manthang, which takes about 4 to 5 hours and offers the combo of adventure and cultural beauty.  A landscape full of hills, cliffs, and rocks lines the trail. We’ll rest for the day after reaching Lo Manthang. Overnight at Lo Manthang.

Day 9: Sightseeing Lo-Manthang (3810m)

Today, we will explore the surrounding areas of Lo-Mangthang. We will head to a Hilltop to visit Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar. Situated at the top of the hill offers a thrilling experience. We will continue toward the main attraction of the Town, Tall Champa Lakhang “God house” the red Thugchen Gompa, the Entrance Hall, and Chyodi Gompa. The palace of the former king of Lho is another attraction for the visitors here. Afterward, we will ascend to the hotel and rest for the day. Overnight in Lomanthang.

Day 10: Lo-Mangthang – Drakmar (3810m): 5-6 hrs

Today, we will head toward Drakmar via Gyakar. During the trip, we will briefly visit Ghar Gompa. The 1200 years old Gompa monastery is one of the best ways to witness Tibetan culture and art in the Mustang region. There is a saying by local people that anyone who makes a heartfelt wish at Ghar Gompa will have it fulfilled. We will continue to walk towards Drakmar from there. Overnight at Drakmar.

Day 11: Drakmar – Ghilling (3806m): 5-6 hrs

We will return to Ghilling over the course of 5-6 hours, enjoying the amazing scenery of the Himalayas. It’s better to go on an evening walk for the trek due to the dusty wind in the afternoon. Overnight in Ghilling.

Day 12: Ghilling – Chhuksang (3050m): 5-6 hrs

We resume our journey early in the morning from Ghilling to Chhuksang, over the course of 5-6 hours. The way to Chhuksang offers fabulous views of the Himalayas, passing through sparse forests and rocky ridges. You will reach the lovely village of Chhuksang in the afternoon. Overnight in Chhuksang.

Day 13: Chhuksang – Jomsom (2700m): 6-7 hrs

Our journey will start early in the morning, towards Upper Mustang where we will join the Annapurna circuit trek. We will enjoy views of mountains, snow-capped hills, and sunlight, and then, we will resume our trek to Jomsom after lunch. Walking beside the Kaligandaki River, we will end the Upper Mustang trek at Jomsom.

Day 14: Back to Pokhara

We will catch the morning flight back to Pokhara. You can visit some destinations in the valley such as Devis falls, Mahendra Cave, Bindabasini Temple, and more. You can hike up to the White stupa also known as World Peace Stupa. After, we will return to the lakeside hotel.

Day 15: Drive back to Kathmandu

We start our journey early after breakfast. The drive back to Kathmandu takes about 6-7 hours. In the evening, we will conduct a farewell dinner together celebrating a successful trek and conducting some traditional and cultural dances for some entertainment and relief from the fatigue after the journey. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 16: Departure Day

Our private cab will come to pick you up a couple of hours before the flight to take you to the airport. You will return with some amazing experiences, stories, and lifelong memories from the Upper Mustang trek.

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland.
