Description

Yanapaccha (5,460 m) is a fantastic mountain in the Ancash province of Yungay. It means waterfall on a black hill in Quechua. And from its summit offers unrivalled views of Pisco and other magnificent peaks in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru.

Our adventure begins in Huaraz, from where we’ll pick you up and drive you to Callejón de Huaylas. The drive itself is marvellous, passing by many charming Andean villages. Then, our first stop will be at Carhuaz (2,650 m), where you’ll taste the local artisanal ice cream and regional fruits. Thereon, we’ll continue to Old Yungay (2,500 m) from where our ascent begins passing by the Llanganuco Valley, right at the base of Huascaran. Later, we’ll reach Chinacocha and Orconcocha, two dazzling glacial lakes. After passing Portachuelo, we’ll start a 3 hour hike towards the Yanapaccha moraine camp (4,900 m) where we’ll prepare for the ascent.

On our second day we’ll reach the summit of Yanapaccha. After an early departure we’ll hike on a rocky trail for around 30 minutes until we reach a spectacular glacier. Upon arrival, it will take us another 4 hours approximately to the summit, where we will get the most breathtaking views of the Andes. Finally, we’ll begin our descent back to moraine camp to get a well deserved break.

The last day of our trip begins with a hike back to Portachuelo. There, our private transportation will take us back to Huaraz, passing by the Llanganuco Valley.

He was very kind, patient and helped me to reach my goal the citadel of Machupicchu. One day I wanted to quit but he encouraged me to continue and waited for my step.

We did the MTB-Huarascan-Circuit (Crossing Punta Olimpica Pass and Portachuelo de Llanganuco Pass) with Eric Albinos „Peru Expedition“. All, the transfers, the hotel stays, the acclimatization tours and the circuit itself, was well organized. Eric and his staff were flexible to our wishes and very helpful. Our Guide Joni is an excellent mountain bike-guide and good tailor too if something is torn. The cook prepared delicious meals during the circuit. The camping equipment was in very good condition. We (Karin, Franz. Wolfgang) can fully recommend „Eric´s Peru Expeditions“.

The agency gave me a guide Darwin, not Juventino. Climb was good, easy just walking. There is one dangerous section near the moraine area with very loose gravel. So make sure you don't slip there or you are dead. I stayed in refugio at the base camp which was much more comfy than camping. Darwin was good but give clients some breaks once in a while, not rush too much. It's a high altitude climbing after all.
