Description

The massif of M’Goun is located about 250 km from Marrakech in the Haut Atlas,  east of the more known massif Toubkal.

The highest point of the M’Goun rises to 4068 m and is the second summit of Morocco. There are many peaks over 3500 m.

Much wilder than the Toubkal massif, sometimes it’s compared to a small Himalayan kingdom when it is accessed by the North. For some years now we have been able to access from the North, and this change makes the massif more accessible in winter.

The renovated M’Goun refuge, is now open and guarded all year long. This allows beautiful skiing descents. The proposed route offers ski touring in the main massif summits, especially the ones in the north face which are covered with snow.

This trip allows you to discover an authentic Moroccan Valley where you can enjoy beautiful stages of ski with a unique accommodation.

If you are interested in such an adventure across the M’Goun Range, I invite you to contact me! It will be a pleasure to give you all the information you need and organise a nice trip that meets your expectations.

Itinerary

Day 1: France - Marrakech – transfer to Arousse (1900 m)

A 5 hour drive allows us to enter the Haut Atlas. Night in a small mountain hut in the village of Arousse.

Day 2: Arousse - Tarkeddit Pass (3400 m) - Tarkeddit Refuge (2910 m)

Long step of 1500 m of altitude change. The beginning of the route is done on foot. The mules carry our ski baggage to the edge of the snow. At the pass, the view of the M’Goun is beautiful. Descent to the refuge.

Day 3: Ascent to M’Goun (4068 m)

We ski the highest point of the massif (known as Oumsoud on maps) with a light backpack. Long step on the ridges. Overnight at the refuge.

Day 4: M’Goun Pass – descent to the hamlet of Azib Ikkis (2300 m)

Small connection step between two long days. Depending on snow conditions and physical conditions of the participants, we can make a tour through the top of Tifdaniwine summit (3449 m). Overnight in a small house-barn in the Ikiss town.

Day 5: Crossing the Igoudamène (3500 m) - Zawit Oulmzi (2100 m)

Long day alternating descents, climbs, ridges. We may need to carry skis on certain sections depending on snow conditions. The mules will help us bringing the equipment up to the snow. If needed we find them again at the snow limit to get to the bottom of the valley in Tabant.
We reach the village of Zaouit Oulmzi at the bottom of the valley in a local taxi. Overnight in the cottage.

Day 6: Waougoulzat (3740 m)

Early departure for the ascent of the major summit, at the far east of the massif. Again a beautiful day! Overnight in a cottage.
