Ascent to Condoriri, Cordillera Real

**I invite you to a 9-day adventure to Pequeño Alpamayo (5370m) in the impressive 'Cordillera Real' in Bolivia. This beautiful peak is near the city of La Paz, in the Andean plateau.**

The **‘Cordillera Real’** in **Bolivia** is one of the key spots of the Andes mountain range. Its white peaks are the background for one of the most impressive areas of the continent: **the Bolivian plateau**.

It is a huge highland similar to the Tibetan, which starts from the Titicaca Lake and has an **average altitude of 4000 meters** above sea level.

**La Paz** is the capital city of Bolivia and still keeps its Andean roots, with plenty of markets in parks and streets.

The city is at a very high altitude (3700 m). Because of this, we'll spend two nights there for acclimatization. Meanwhile, we'll prepare everything for the expedition.

Then we'll continue to the **Condoriri region**, a beautiful area with several peaks that go over 5000 mt.

We will set our base camp at 4600 mt, at a lagoon shore. Once there, we’ll practice the ice climbing tactics that we’ll use during the ascent in a nearby glacier.

First, we'll climb **‘Pirámide Blanca’ mountain**, where we can practice roping techniques to walk on glaciers.

Our final goal will be the beautiful white peak of **Pequeño Alpamayo.** There, we will implement everything we practiced the previous days.

Ascent to Pequeño Alpamayo in Bolivia

Why not enjoying a perfect Bolivian snow together? This ski touring expedition will bring us to the 6088 meters of the **Huayna Potosi**.

This trip consists of a week of climbing different summits to get acclimatized. Finally, the week ends with the ascent of the Huayna Potosi, which is located 100 km away from La Paz.

Close from La Paz, Huayna Potosi is very famous among climbers but there are few people that try the opportunity to climb it ski touring. With 55-60º slopes during the last 200 m, you will challenge yourself and finally enjoy a beautiful view on **La Paz**, the **Altiplano** and the full **Cordillera Real**.

The ascent of Huayna Potosi in itself requires 2 days. I propose to you the following program for these last 2 days of the week.

**Day 1 at Huayna Potosi**  
Transfer from La Paz in private vehicle to Casa Blanca refuge (4750 m). Climb to Campo de Rocas (5130 m). Peaceful climb up to the moraine and then a bit more steep on the rocks. We finish the day at the Refuge.

**Day 2 at Huayna Potosi**  
Departure in the night. Quiet climb up to Argentine camp (5450m). Climb of an ice wall that brings us to the upper plateau. Peaceful climb up the final slope. This last part is a narrow and vertiginous ridge to the summit.  
Total climbing duration on day 2 is about 6-8 hours.  
Finally the pure joy with a ski descent from 6088 to 4900 m.

Ski touring Huayna Potosi, Cordillera Real

I’d like to invite skiers and winter adventurers to this **2 day expedition** since I think **Huayna Potosi** is a great spot to practice real ski touring in Bolivia and climb a mythic summit.

The Huayna Potosi mountain is near La Paz. In this area of **Cordillera Real** we have warm and cozy huts as well as camping sites to sleep under the stars, even at more than 5000 meters in height! From up there we will have the stunning views of **Lake Titicaca** and the Yungas (subtropical jungle).

We will also get to see amazing mines, lagoons, a dam at the head of the valley and a breathtaking panorama on **Telata and Charquini.**

Our meeting and final point will be **La Paz**, capital city of Bolivia. Please find more details of the itinerary at the end of this description.

We will depart from the city center towards the Huayna Potosí base camp. Then we will climb to high camp where we will find the hut.

This 13-day expedition will take us to some of the most important mountains in **Bolivia.** We will go to **Pequeño Alpamayo** (5973 m) and **Huayna Potosí** (6088 m), among others.

**Pequeño Alpamayo**, named after the Peruvian Alpamayo, is a beautiful peak. In fact, we can already see it from the base camp in the Condoriri-Tuni valley. It has a sharp edge that takes you to the summit. Besides, it goes down thousands of meters straight into the Yungas (the amazonic jungle in Bolivia). This contrast differentiates it with most of the peaks in the region, which have less altitude difference with the ‘altiplano’ (Andean plateau).

**Huayna Potosí**, meaning ‘Young Mountain’ in aymara, is just 25 km away from La Paz. It is a classical peak for mountaineers who want to reach a 6000 m summit through a short and easy route. Also for experienced climbers who prefer beautiful and more technical routes through the west and north-west faces.

**Illimani** is a mountain located in the **Cordillera Real** range in **Bolivia**, and it is 6432 m above sea level.

We will leave from **La Paz**. In fact, from the city there are already amazing views of the mountain.

Climb Mount Illimani, Cordillera Real

This program is one of the most **classics in Cordillera Real in Bolivia**. It is an **excellent program to ascend Huayna Potosí (6088 m)**, one of the most renowned and high mountains of the country. From the top you can see the Altiplano, La Paz, Illimani, etc.

Huayna Potosí is located at 25 km North from La Paz.

I really like it because the area is impressive and there is a great diversity, in technical terms, in a same sector. This allows me to adapt to different kind of groups. I enjoy spending time with groups there.

The huts in this sector also make it confortable (compared to Condoriri, which is more a “tent” expedition). Maybe we will have the chance to eat some trouts or observe some vizcacha, part of the local fauna.

For this expedition you need already to be acclimatized. I can also propose you options for a previous acclimatization.

The best period to do this climb is from May to October and the highest season is in particular June-July.

For this 7-day trip, I propose to you the following itinerary.

**Day 1**  
La Paz – Tuni – Chiarkhota.

**Day 2**  
Base camp – Pico Austria – Base camp.

**Day 3**  
Pico Tarija (5150 m). It’s before Alpamayo pequeño. Good chance of success and so it is a good preparation to Huayna Potosí. The slope is not so steep. No climbing. Then from the top you can see the Alpamayo Pequeño and from there you can see almost the same view. You can also see Yungas, i.e. the valleys there.

**Alternative Day 3**  
(more technical)  
Base camp – climb Pequeño Alpamayo. This ascent is quite technical. The slope is 50 degrees, with 2 lengths of rope. We’ll take care by gathering. You need good experience, but the most important is to be well acclimatized.

**Day 4**  
Hike from PA base camp – Maria LLoco (trek for 7 h).

**Day 5**  
Hike from Maria Lloco – base camp of Huayna Potosi (5 h).

**Day 6**  
Base camp H.P, high camp HP (3:30 h).

**Day 7**  
High camp H.P. – Summit – Base camp. Finally we return to La Paz city.

The **Parinacota** is a 6330 m volcano with a crater in its summit. The viewpoint and the landscape reminds us of a sandy desert. The ground can be quite difficult to walk because we have to step forward many times to advance a few meters.

During the trip to **Parinacota** we can see vicuñas, alpacas, llamas and flamingos. And if we talk about the vegetation, we can see kenuas, native plants and paja brava.

**At 5648 m, 'Cabeza de Condor' is an iconic mountain of the Condoriri massif in the Cordillera Real.** 

Because of its impressive shape, it's also known as the '**Bolivian Matternorn**', like the famous mountain in the Alps.

The **Condoriri massif** is a group of snowy peaks, all above 5000 meters. 'Cabeza de Condor' is the highest of them.

Climbing this peak is a classical trip for mountaineers in Bolivia. This time, I invite you to a **6-day expedition** that will start from the city of **La Paz.** 

The only way of reaching Condoriri base camp is by foot, so we'll walk there from **Tuni Lagoon** at 4200 m**.** 

Nevertheless, before approaching 'Cabeza de Condor' I propose to climb other peaks in Condoriri, such as **Austria, Ilusion** and **Pequeño Alpamayo.**

Once we get a proper acclimatization we will head towards our main objective. It will take around 6 hours of climbing.

Although most climbers ascend this mountain through the **Normal Route** or **Directisima**, you can climb it from other sides too. But you have to consider those routes are steep.

Once in the summit, you will have stunning views of the Cordillera Real and Lake Titicaca.

Then, we'll descend to base camp in 3 hours.

From the city of **La Paz** we will go to **Tuni Lagoon** by private transportation (2-hour trip).

From **Llama square** we will walk for 3 hours to the **Chiarkhota lagoon** (4650 m), located in the base of the solid **Condoriri Massif.**

We will camp near the lagoon.

This day we can climb **Mirador Peak** (5100 m) or **Austria** (5200 m). We can decide in base camp.

Night camping.

Acclimatization day

Ascent to **Ilusion peak** (5250 m), hiking to the glacier for about 1.30 hours.

From here, it is about 3 hours climbing to the summit of Ilusion.

Then, we descend for about 2 hours and return to the base camp.

Night camping.

Here we will use climbing equipment.

We arrive to the base of the snowy pyramid, and then have a technical climb during the first 80 m. (55 grades).

After passing this technical side, we will ascend up to the summit of Pequeño Alpamayo (5400 m) in 3.30 hours.

We will have some minutes over the summit to admire the mountainous landscape that surrounds us.

Descend will take 4 hours. Return to base camp, night camping.

Hiking to the glacier for about 1.30 hours. 

From here, we will use climbing equipment, climbing for about 6 hours to reach the summit at 5.700 m by the normal way.

Then we descend for 3 hours to base camp, night camping.

Cabeza de Condor

Descent for about 2 hours to Tuni Lagoon, with llamas assistance for the heavy bags.

From here, we will return to the city of **La Paz** by private transportation.
