The **Ruco Pichincha**, the **North Illiniza**, the **Cayambe** and the **Chimborazo** are waiting for you. Do you dare? So, keep reading! This **9-day climbing trip** will surprise you.

The **Ruco Pichincha** is one of the several peaks of the **Pichincha Volcano**. It has two large craters, one inside the other, as a result of its eruptions. It is a really exciting ascent and works perfectly as an acclimatization trek.

Regarding the **North Illiniza**, it is a 5126-meter peak and it is one of the two summits that form the **Illiniza Volcano**. The ascent to this summit is quite easy and requires almost no climbing skills. The other mountain of this volcano is the **South Illiniza**, which is more demanding.

As for the **Chimborazo** and **Cayambe** volcanoes, they are the two most famous mountains in Ecuador. We will climb both at the end of the program, as a coronation of such an amazing expedition.

We will do our first acclimatization ascent  at 4794 m to the peak of the active volcano Guagua Pichincha. Our primary goal here is to help each team member to start testing their response to high elevation and to give our bodies the chance to get used to the altitude. In the afternoon we will drive back to Quito and spend the night at Casa Helbling Hostal (BL)

Pichincha (acclimatization)

After breakfast, we will depart from Quito to the Ilinizas parking lot. After a 1:30 hour, we’ll arrive at a remote paramo in an area called La Virgen. From here it is a 3-hour hike up to the hut, at 4600 m. We’ll have dinner and sleep there (B/BL/D)

Acclimatization at North Illiniza Hut (4600 m)

We’ll get up early at 5 AM and after breakfast we’ll start the ascent to the North Illiniza. This peak is normally a fairly straight-forward climb. In one section of the route we must use a fixed rope to pass the famous “Death Pass.” After this pass we’ll reach the summit. The average time to the top is 3 hours. Here we will stop for some pictures and lunch and then we’ll descend for a 1:30 hour to the hut. Once there, we will rest for a while before going down to the parking lot. Our private car will take us to a hotel in the Cotopaxi National Park for a very restful night (B/BL)

North Illiniza Summit (5125 m)

From Quito we will drive north across the Pan American highway, passing some important villages like El Quinche, a very catholic town of Ecuador. We will also have the opportunity to visit the Ecuadorian Line, where we will stop for 1 hour. After that we will continue driving for 15 minutes to finally arrive at the Cayambe village, where we can have a typical lunch from the local people. After lunch we must drive for another 1:30 hour to reach the Cayambe mountain hut at 4700 m. Cayambe is the Ecuador’s third highest peak and stands at 5799 m. Its summit is just 3 km north of the Ecuadorian Line. This mountain has a large glacier which is one of the most active of all the ice flows of the country. Moreover, its varied glacial terrain provides an excellent training skills ground where we can practique some techniques. Overnight stay at the hut (B/BL/D)

Cayambe mountain hut

We will wake up at 7 am for breakfast. We will go to the glacier by 8:30 AM. You will learn some glacier skills and all the necessary techniques for climbing high peaks like Cayambe, Cotopaxi or Chimborazo. I will teach you how to use ice-axe and crampons and many other safety procedures. We will also practice some rope-handling traverses with the team. After 6 hours of training we will return to the hut for a delicious lunch. Then, we will rest and prepare the equipment for a midnight departure to the Cayambe summit. Early dinner and go to bed at 6:30 PM (B/BL/D).

Cayambe Glacier learning day

We’ll wake up at midnight. Breakfast and final equipment check. We leave the refuge at 1 AM and climb with headlamps for the first four hours. We will have an easy glacier climb to a saddle and then, continue onto steeper and exciting grounds. We’ll cross large crevasses and pass some spectacular seracs. We must climb 40º slopes with occasional short steeper sections. We will finally reach the summit at about 9 or 10 AM. Short rest and return down to the hut for other 4 hours. From there, we can drive down to the Cayambe City and continue to Quito. Casa Helbling Hostal (B/BL)

Today we will move from Quito to Chimborazo, driving across the Pan Aamerican highway and passing by the Latacunga and Ambato cities. We’ll arrive at the hut at 3 or 4 PM. We can sleep there or in tents (B/BL/D)

Quito – Chimborazo hut (5000 m)

If the normal route has no snow it becomes a very dangerous rockfall since the road is very steep. There is an extra cost of $ 100 per person to cover the expenses of the porters who will carry all the camping equipment, food and water.

On the other hand, we can hike up with all the camping and climbing gear to the the high camp of the Stubel Glacier. Once in there, we will set up our tents and prepare all for the big day (B/BL/D)

If normal route is not available...

We will get up at midnight for breakfast and after checking the equipment, we will leave the hut at 1 AM. We will move immediately to the huge glacier on Chimborazo’s southwest face, where we will first traverse moderately angled ice slopes, climbing through a series of icefalls and up the steep ice ramps, simultaneously on moderate grounds belaying up the steep pitches. Our team will rope together in order to cross crevasses and finally make it to the summit. This is the highest point of the Andes, and from here we will have a magnificent view of the emerging volcanoes that form the eastern and western mountain range. The Chimborazo summit is at 6,310m. The total climbing time is 8-9 hours and we’ll return to the hut by noon. We’ll return to Quito, arriving at the hotel at 8 PM. We’ll spend the night in Quito or in other place according to your itinerary (B/BL).

##### **The ascent to Nevado Cayambe**

This mountain is a well kept secret, because its ascent route is as nice as Cotopaxi but we’ll find way less mountaineers in our way up. Just as the other nevados in Ecuador, the path to the summit of **Nevado Cayambe** is abundant with beautiful cleavages, nevertheless the ascent is not very technically demanding.

##### **About Cayambe**

Nevado Cayambe (5790 m) is the third highest peak in Ecuador and its summit is **the highest in the Andes north of the Equator**.  
It is located in the _Pichincha_ province, approximately 70 km northeast of Quito. It is one of the volcanoes in the _Cordillera Real_, the same mountain range of Cotopaxi.

##### **I propose to you the following itinerary:**

**Day 1**. From Quito to Cayambe Refuge (4600 m).

**Day 2**. From the refuge to Cayambe Summit (5790 m), then back to Quito.

Nevado Cayambe Ascent (5790m)

In this **6 days mountaineering trip we will go up to the summit of Cayambe**, one of the most beautiful volcanoes in the volcanoes avenue of Ecuador. But before, to have a good acclimatization and increase the chances of success, we will also ascend Rucú Pichincha and Illiniza North.

Located northeast of Quito on the eastern ridge of the Andes, Cayambe is Ecuador’s third highest peak and stands at 5790m (18,991ft.) and his summit is just 3km north of the Equator Line. The glacier of this mountain is large and among the most active of all equatorial ice flows, and its varied glacial terrain here provides an excellent opportunity for training skills and a rewarding summit climb.

**Itinerary:**

**Day 1: Hike up to Rucu Pichincha (4.796m / 15.724ft)**?

We leave from Quito at 8.00am after breakfast, and travel to the Teleferique in Quito to make an initial height gain. We ascent at the 4.796m (15.724ft) peak of the ancient volcano Rucu Pichincha. From the top we can see the Guagua Pichincha active volcano. Quito is nestled on the slopes of this active volcano. Our primary goal here is to help each team member begin testing his or her response to higher elevation and to give our bodies a chance to get used to altitude. The hike up is around 3-4 hours up and 2 hours hike down to the cable car, arrive at the hotel around 4-5pm. (BL)

**Day 2: Refugio Ilinizas (4.600m / 15.092ft)**

Mid-morning departure from Quito to Ilinizas parking lot. After one and a half hours drive from Quito we will arrive at a remote paramo in an area called la Virgins parking lot at 3900m. From here we can hike for 3 hour or a bit more to reach the refuge at 4600m, enjoying a beautiful landscape on our way. Arrive to the refuge around 3-4pm. Rest, dinner and night at refuge. (BL/D)

**Day 3: Iliniza North (5.125m/16.815ft)**

Summit day attempt on Iliniza Norte. This peak is normally a fairly straight forward climb for acclimatization to develop your body on good healthy and strenuous for climbing the highest peaks. The average time to the summit is three hours or less. After good rest we descend to the refuge. After an hour rest we pack and go down to the car park where is our car transportation that will take us to our hotel destination near to Cotopaxi National Park for a good rest Night. (B/BL)

**Day 04**

Depart from the hotel at 10:00 A.M. Driving north, we will pass the traditional village El Quinche and the Quitsato, the ecuatorial line. We have a typical lunch in the village of Cayambe and then drive for another hour and a half to the volcano’s refuge (4700 m). Overnight at hut. (B/BL/D)

**Day 5: Cayambe Glaciers School day**

Wake up at 7 am for breakfast. We continue adjusting to altitude acclimatization. We go on the glacier at 8.30 AM, where we’ll familiarize ourselves with the various climbing techniques, and the equipment work for climbing. Our guide will show and teach glacier skills, safety procedures and all of the techniques necessary for climbing the high peaks like Cayambe, Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and others mountains. After 6 hours training we go back to the refuge for delicious lunch and resting afternoon. Preparation of the equipment for a midnight departure for Cayambe day summit. Early dinner and early to bed usually by 6:30 P.M. Refuge. (B/BL/D)

**Day 6: Summit of Cayambe**

Wake up at midnight. Breakfast and final equipment check. We leave the refuge at 1:00 AM and climb with headlamps for the first four hours. We have an easy glacier climb to a saddle and then continue on to steeper and exciting grounds. We’ll traverse around large crevasses and pass some spectacular seracs. Climb 40 degree slopes with occasional short steeper sections. 200mt below to the summit we will climb over 60 degree for two peach of rope, and then the final part we hike up for 1 more hour to reach the Cayambe’s summit around 9-10 AM. Amazing views and picture opportunities If the weather condition is nice;-) Short rest and return down for 3-4 hours to the refuge around 2:00 P.M. Short rest and then we can drive down to Cayambe City and continue drive back to Quito. (B/BL)

#### **Let me introduce you to a great 10-day climbing trip to the Cayambe and Chimborazo summits.**

It is a unique program because it consists in an acclimatization training before climbing the Chimborazo. **Thus, if you don’t have a strong technical background or a perfect physical shape, don’t worry!**

Remember that **the Chimborazo** is a considerably technical climbing. Besides that, it requires previous experience both in height and in handling crampons, ice axe and ropes. However, what I usually suggest to my non-expert clients is to climb some mountains with less difficulty before the big goal.

Therefore, I prepared this trip that consists in great acclimatization days in the best spots of **the Ecuadorian Andes**. First, I will guide you to the top of **Pasochoa Volcano**. Then, we will enjoy the **Guagua Pichincha** trek. After that, we will climb **the 5790-meter Cayambe summit**. Finally,  the best part comes: the most awaited climbing up to the top of **the Chimborazo Volcano!** If you want to read the complete itinerary of this trip, please find it at the bottom of this description.

QUITO

We will meet in the morning at the hotel. While breakfast, we will have a talk about the itinerary for the following days. After that, we will drive to the Old Town for a city tour. You will visit some well-preserved colonial architecture churches, buildings and houses. Besides that, today we will have our first acclimatization hike after checking the equipment by the evening.

CITY TOUR IN QUITO

We will set off at 8 am and drive to the trail head. It is a mountain at 3.300 meters of height. We will hike for about 3-4 hours to the summit. Once in there, we will have lunch and then, we’ll descend for two hours to the base. Here a transfer will be waiting to take us back to the Hotel in Quito.

PASOCHOA PEAK

We will leave Quito early in the morning. Driving east, we will arrive to a parking place where a new hike begins. We will trek on the same dirt road for about two hours and get on the trailhead to the top. Hike on a screen and rocky ridge for an hour and get to summit of this ancient volcano. The descent will be by a steep scree slope and get on the main road. Keep on the road for half hour and get to the parking lot where the transport will pick up and drive back to Quito.

HIKE GUAGUA PICHINCHA

Early in the morning we’ll start our 3-hour drive up to Cayambe’s hut. In the afternoon we’ll head to the glacier to do some climbing skills practice. Come back to the hut and have an early dinner. After making the final preparations for the summit ascent, we’ll go to bed until 11 pm.

CAYAMBE HUT

The way to the summit starts at 11 pm. We’ll hike through a rocky-sandy section and get to the glacier entrance. Here, we must to put the crampons on and continue a gentle icy field with the help of ropes. This route will head to a snowy slope. Finally, after some steep slopes, crevasses and traverses we’ll get the summit (about at 8 am).

Then, we’ll descent to the hut, pack our gear and drive down for about 3 hours and get in La Chuquiragua Hostelry, a nice place to rest and recover energies.

CAYAMBE SUMMIT

During this day we’ll drive to Riobamba and have lunch in Ambato. At the night we will stay at San Gorge hotel located right in downtown.

RESTING DAY

After a late breakfast, we’ll start driving to the hut. Depending on the route conditions we’ll decide to stay at Carrel Hut and climb the normal Veintimilla Route or to hike up to the Stubel Glacier and camp at 5.100 meters of height.

CHIMBORAZO HUT

The final and most important ascent. The hardest and most physically demanding day of the trip is today. We will wake up at 00 hs so that we get ready for the sustained climb that will take about 8 hours. First, we’ll reach the Whimper summit (Chimborazo) where the most spectacular Andean Ecuadorian views can be appreciated. Surrounding snowed peaks like Altar, Tungurahua, Ilinizas, Cotopaxi & Antisana could be all seen in a clear day.

Finally, we’ll descend to the hut or the camp for about 3 more hours, pack up and drive back to Quito.

Have you ever wondered how it is like to climb **5 volcanoes in two weeks**, surrounded by an extraordinary collection of glaciers, valleys and picturesque houses? You can know how it is like if you sign up for this **16-day program**.

We will start with an acclimatization, achieved thanks to the first 2 goals of the trip: the Guagua Pichincha peak at 4794m and the Rucu Pichincha, at 4627m. Afterwards, we will try their three ‘big brothers’: Cayambe (5790 m), Cotopaxi, which is **the world’s highest active volcano** at 5897m, and Chimborazo, at 6310m, which is the **furthest point from the center of the Earth**.

Climbing Cayambe first will give the participants the abilities and fitness to reach the other two peaks, because they will require a high level of fitness and experience.

On 16 days, we will also get to visit cultural spots such as the famous Otovalo Indian Market, to **relax submerged in the Oyacachi hot springs, and to visit Baños**, a quiet colonial city.

Arrival

We will visit the Indian market of Otavalo, hike one hill above the town of Otavalo and San Pablo lake, the biggest in Ecuador. After an hour and a half, we will stop to enjoy a typical Otavaleño and Ecuadorian meal. We’ll take an afternoon drive back to Quito, stopping at the Equatorial Monument or Equatorial line.

We will make our acclimatization ascent on the Guagua Pichincha or Rucu Pichincha volcano at 4,800m.

We will make a scenic tour across Quito, and also will visit the national ethnological museum and other interesting places.

We’ll depart from Quito at 9:00 A.M., and arrive at the Cayambe volcano refuge by 3:00 P.M. (4,700m).

Quito – Cayambe

We will go on the glacier at 8:30 A.M to continue our acclimatization. We will engage in the moderate glacier section to familiarize ourselves with the  climbing techniques and equipment. I will train you on glacier skills, all necessary techniques for climbing the high peaks like Cayambe, Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and other mountains. We’ll learn rope-handling, glacier travel, snow climbing, basic crevasse rescue skills and safety techniques. After 6 hours training, we go back to the refuge for a delicious lunch and early dinner. We will get prepared for a midnight departure to Cayambe.

Cayambe Glaciers School Day

We’ll get up at midnight for breakfast and final equipment check up. We will leave the refuge at 1:00 A.M. and climb with headlamps for the first 4 hours. We’ll reach the final Cayambe summit at about 9:00 A.M. We will return to the hut around 2:00 P.M.

We will spend our day swimming in the hot pools of Oyacachi. After a relaxing afternoon, we will drive to La Cienega hotel near the Cotopaxi volcano.

Oyacachi Hot Springs

We will drive into the Cotopaxi National Park. From here we will have a 45 minute hike with full packs up to the Jose Rivas hut. We will enjoy a hot tea and a short rest before heading out to the glacier for an afternoon review of technical training and equipment preparation.

Cotopaxi

We will climb for 7 hours to the summit of the Cotopaxi volcano. We will overnight at Hosteria La Cienega.

Cotopaxi summit

We will arrive at the lower refuge of Chimborazo “Carrel” at 4,800m around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon and continue with our acclimatization.

Chimborazo First Refuge

We will walk 40 minutes with full packs up to the Whimper hut on the Chimborazo flank, located at 5,000m.  There, we will rest and prepare ourselves for the early morning departure.

Chimborazo Second Refuge

We will climb for 8 or 9 hours to the summit of the volcano. We will  first traverse moderately angled ice slopes, climb through a series of icefalls and up to the steep ice ramps, climbing simultaneously on moderate grounds belaying up the steep pitches. Our team will rope together in order to cross crevasses and finally make it to the summit.

We will spend the day at the colorful town of Baños.

We will drive back to Quito and have a farewell dinner at our hotel.

**Ecuador** is home to many renowned peaks. It is the case for example of Illiniza Sur, Altar-Obispo and Chimborazo. They are the protagonists of this adventure.

This is a very technical expedition for expert climbers. In fact, it is more technical than what people generally expect. The trip lasts 8 days. I particularly like it for advanced climbers that want to **discover some of the most renowned and remote volcanoes from Ecuador.**

The Iliniza is a stratovolcano in the southwest of Quito. It has two snow-capped peaks, the South Illiniza (5,248 m) and the North Illiniza (5,126 m). During this trip, we'll climb the first one. **Its ascent is more difficult than the northern peak due to its glacial nature**. The route has intermediate-advanced difficulty steps and after some occasional snowfall, we may need to use rope and crampons.

I think that the South Illiniza is one of the best acclimatization mountains in Ecuador. You can use it as a preparatory ascent for higher peaks such as the Cotopaxi, [**Chimborazo**](https://www.explore-share.com/trip/ascents-volcano-avenue-chimborazo/) and Cayambe. In addition, we will spend some nights in a rustic hut which is between the two peaks. We'll reach there from El Chaupi.

As for the **Antisana**, it is the fourth highest volcano in Ecuador. It lies inside an important natural reserve, where the **native fauna and flora** abounds. We can find many species of birds here, among them, the hummingbirds and the frailejones. Its summit has a glacier and we can access there from the city of **Quito**.

Arrival into Quito. Transfer to the Sierra Madre Hotel.

Quito

We will depart at 8.30 AM towards the Cerro Pasochoa at 4199 m. It is an ancient and eroded volcano which has been inactive since the last ice age. We will drive until we are at the parking lot, from where we will follow the track along the east side of the mountain. This easy ascent will take us 3-4 hours. Rest for one hour, lunch and return down to the car. In the afternoon we’ll move to the Machachi city. Overnight at Hosteria la Estación (B/BL).

Acclimatization in Pasochoa (4199 m)

This day we will leave at 9 am from the hotel in direction to Quito through the Llloa village, at 3400 meters high. From here we will start to walk towards the hut over an old path, admiring the Andean native vegetation. The refuge is at 4600 m. So we will gain an altitude of 1200 meters today and the hike will take around 4 hours. Arrival at hut at 4-5 PM, rest, dinner and sleep (B/BL/D).

Hotel – Guagua Pichincha hut

Breakfast at 7 AM and then, we will move up to the Guagua Pichincha peak (4790 m). The ascent will take 1:30 hour. Then, we will climb its father summit at 4385 m. And finally, we will continue to the summit of Rucu Pichincha at 4696 m. The crossing of this route is very interesting because of its nature and geography with several summits and landscapes. It is a perfect acclimatization process to continue with the plan to climb the Antisana summit. After making the 3 summits we will go directly down to the cable car for 2-3 hours to the base of the mountain where we will take a car to the hotel Sierra Madre (B/BL).

Guagua Pichincha - Rucu Pichincha - Quito

Rest morning and lunch at 12 AM on the Papallacta Resort to be ready to leave at 1 PM. Drive during 3 hours until we reach the parking lot at 3900 m. From here, we will hike up for other 3 hours to the Illiniza Hut. The heavy gear will be carried by the mules so you can hike only with your day backpack (B/BL/D).
