**Join me for one or several days of backcountry skiing / ski touring in the area of Sapporo, on Hokkaido island, in Japan.**

The mountains all around have very light powder snow and great forests that will make the experience unique! We have this type of snow because of the cold winds that come from North China and Siberia. In fact, the amount of snow that falls every year here is very impressive!

Depending on the snow and weather conditions, as well as your wishes, we will pick up the best spots to go skiing.

There are many spots to go either backcountry or off-piste skiing in the surroundings of Hokkaido's famous ski resorts, like Sapporo Teine, Sapporo Kokusai, Kiroro, Niseko, Rusutsu, Yubari, Kamui, Furano, Tomamu, Sahoro. Our objectives: deep snow and no track!

We will ski between 6 and 8 hours a day.

Besides, you will enjoy delicious food and natural hot springs (onsen) which are part of the Japanese culture.

Hokkaido backcountry and ski touring

**Skiing in Asahikawa on the island of Hokkaido is one of the best options to find the finest powder snow in all Japan! So why not leaving together on a guided freeride ski tour, ride some deep snow and discover the Japanese culture and traditions?**

**Asahikawa** is located in the middle of **Hokkaido**. It is the 2nd city of the island, 120 km north east of **Sapporo**. It makes a great base to visit the different ski resorts of the area: **Kamui, Asahidake, Furano, Kurodake** and **Tokachi-dake**.

**Asahidake**, one hour from Asahikawa, is a fantastic ski resort with not so expensive ski lifts. Powder and freeride skiing lovers will love it there!

**Tokachi-Dake** is around 60 km southeast from Asahikawa. This backcountry ski region has to offer the ultimate powder. You can get very light snow there, because almost all the slopes are facing north area and high altitude. It is also very amazing to ski in the on the volcano and ski in the forest with big spruce trees.

The main advantage of being based in **Asahikawa** is that every morning we can decide to which resort we want to go based on the conditions of the day. It can be either for some freeride / off-piste skiing or for some ski touring on the volcanoes of the region. You can be almost 100% sure that we will find great powder that Hokkaido is famous around the world for.

The best time for skiing in Hokkaido goes from January till March. The heavy snowfalls happens in January and February sometimes up to 15 meters in 2 months.

We can ski together either for one or several days. I can also organize an entire ski week for you and take you to the best ski spots of Hokkaido. In the evening, we will enjoy together some good beers, sake and delicious Japanese meals. In addition, we will visit the onsen (natural hot spring baths) for some great relaxation.

##### Please join me for 2+ days in the beautiful area of Gunma and Nigata to experience ski touring in places where very few foreign tourists go. This makes it an unforgettable cultural trip while enjoying good snow among the hills and the forests of the region.

The Gunma prefecture is located 2 hours drive North West of Tokyo. I come from that region and it will be a great pleasure to let you discover it.

Please find below a program for a 3-day trip. It can of course be adapted based on your time here and your wishes. The prices listed below are on a per day basis.

**Day 1**  
06.36 Departure from Tokyo station, arrival at 07.53 at the Jomo-kogen station where we will meet. We will then drive 1h to reach the starting point of our tour, in the Gunma or Nigata area. Our objective will be to ascent of of these mountains: Mount Tanigawa, Mount Hotaka or Mount Tailappyo… We will finish the day around 15.00 and drive to an Onsen in the Minakami area. Relax, delicious diner and sleep…

**Day 2**  
We will meet at 08.00 at the onsen. The ski tour of the day will be chosen based on the weather and snow conditions. We will start the day by a 30min to 1.5h drive to the starting point of the trail. As for the first day, we will finish around 15.00 and drive back to the onsen.

**Day 3**  
Same as day 2. After the day, I will drive you back to the onsen and then drop you off to the train station to take the train at 18.25, arrival at 19.40 in Tokyo

After you arrive, you will take a 3-4 hour transfer to Niseko, where you will spend the night. We will ski touring the south part of Hokkaido Island. We will be spending three nights at the same lodge to maximize our skiing days. On day three we will move to the seaside city of Otaru on our way north.

We will get the transfer to the north with some good touring along the way.

We will stay here for three nights. We have the option to ski Asahidake, the highest peak on Hokkaido Island at 2290m. On the night of day 7, we will move one last time to a downtown hotel in Asahikawa to celebrate our tour and spend the last night!

9-day ski touring in Honshu, Japan's main island, challenging your skills on the snow in Mount Fuji and Tateyama, with a certified mountain guide.

**Daisetsuzan**, also called **Taisetsuzan**, is the largest national park in Japan. It is located in the center of **Hokkaido** in a mountain range. In fact, it includes **Asahidake**, the highest peak (2,290 m) of the island.

This park is just a beauty. It's full of flowers between the end of June and the end of July. Besides, we enjoy the superb mountains. And we get to see wild animals (bears, foxes…) and preserved flora.

I love this place very much even though the mountains are not very high (I'm a mountain guide). But the environment surrounding us is so wild and preserved that it makes your time there very special and unforgettable. You feel the living nature so much after staying for more than one day in these places!

The trail is not difficult and not very steep. It is suitable for all levels. The average walking time per day is 7 hours, including time to eat, to stop to admire the landscapes…

The program I'm organizing there lasts for 4 days. We will be camping every night in a tent. This makes the experience much more better. The mountain huts are very often full.

**Please note that I can only take you on this hike during the months of July and August. Snow makes June and September unsuitable for this hike.**

##### Required Technical Level:

Intermediate

##### Required Fitness Level:

Need to have good strength for 8-9 hours hike-up in a day.  
Total walking hours will be Day1: 4-5 hours, Day2: 8-9 hours, Day3: 8-9 hours, Day4: 5 hours. It is rather moderate trekking course. Not advance technical skill needed, but the participants need to have good fitness enough to walk whole day with carrying their bags (approximately 7kg-10kg).

##### Guide Ratio:

Guide Ratio is 1:4.  
The tour is available for **up to 8 people.**  
\*If the participants are **over 5**, I will ask **support guide** to join us.

##### Climate:

In Hokkaido, the temperature might be **under 10℃** even at lower mountains. When the weather condition is bad, it down to **\-10℃** even in the summer time.  Usually, in the early summer, the temperature is around **20℃～23℃** in July. Morning and evening is getting cooler at the camp site. Please bring your warm clothes.

##### Note:

*   If you have items that you do not want to carry during hike, you can leave them at the guide's car. The guide's car will transfer from the trailhead to Shimo-Yamaguchi.
    
*   The guide will provide you light meals for your breakfast and supper. And, you will have drinking water every day.
    
*   The participants will share the tent for 4-people.
    
*   Please book your flight arriving at Asahikawa Airport before 9:00 a.m., and departure from Shin-Chitose Airport after 7:00 p.m.

We will meet at **North Exit, Sapporo Station** at 7:00 a.m. Or, pick up at your hotel or meet at **Asahikawa Airport** at 9:30 a.m.  
From Sapporo station /  Asahikawa Airport, we will go forward to **Asahidake** Rope-way Station. We can stop at the shop to buy some food or snacks. We will go to **Sugatami Station** (the 5th station) of Asahidake Rope-way and start our hiking. We will take a gondola and then walk for 2 1/2 hours in order to reach the top. We will camp on the other side of the mountain after going down for about an hour. Stay overnight at **Ura-Asahi** camp site (tent)

This is also a beautiful day with a lot of amazing views on **the Daisetsuzan mountain range**. At night, we either sleep in the tent or in the mountain hut. Stay overnight at **Chu-betsu** camp site (mountain hut or tent)

**Tomuraushi** is a very famous mountain in Hokkaido. We will stay at night on the **Minaminuma** camp. (tent)

We will go hiking from **Minaminuma** to **Higashi-taisetsu-sou** around noon.

After taking **Onsen** and having lunch, we will go to Shin-Chitose Airport at 6:00 p.m. / Sapporo Station at 7:30 p.m.

**Please join me for a 2-day hike on one of the routes leading to the top of Mount Fuji. This is the highest peak of Japan (3776 m) and an active stratovolcano. Its last eruption occurred in 1707.**

The best period to climb it is usually **between early July and mid September**. The mountain is officially closed for the rest of the year and most mountain huts will be closed. Technical and fitness requirements are higher for summit attempts during the closed periods.

We will meet in Fujiyoshida and stay one night in one of the huts located on the volcano.

Ascending to the top is not that difficult. Only in some sections, the terrain becomes sharp and rocky. There are many signs throughout the way that inform the walkers of other possible dangers such as sudden wind gusts and rocks that can be loose. Although the true challenge of this climb lies in its stiffness and the fact that as you go higher the air becomes thinner.

We will wake up early on the 2nd day in order to reach the summit when the sun rises. We will then enjoy a beautiful 360° view on Honshu.

**Most skiers coming to Hokkaido go to the popular ski resort of Niseko to experience its pristine powder snow. But for those who want an unforgettable ski touring experience, going up and down one of Japan’s most famous volcanoes might be a really good idea. So why not skiing together on Mount Yotei and going for the perfect runs?**

The Yotei Volcano is a beautiful symmetrical stratovolcano, like Mount Fuji in Honshu. The mount is called Ezo-Fuji, which means the Mount Fuji of Hokkaido. It is the highest mountain of the region (1898m) and it has the longest ski descent on the island.

The summit has an impressive 700 m wide crater and its flanks are cut by deep erosion gullies. Conditions in the crater are some of the best on the volcano as the wind brings snow from all directions. The way up to the crater of Yotei Volcano can take between 5 and 8 hours.

I will guide you on the best flanks of Yotei based on the weather and snow conditions. If the conditions were less favorable we may modify the destination.

After the day, we will enjoy good beer, delicious Japanese food and relax in the traditional hot springs (onsen).

We can combine the ski touring ascent of Mount Yotei with a tour in the area, going for some awesome freeride skiing descents and/or other ski touring trips. The following ski resorts might be really good options to extend your stay: Niseko, Rusutsu, Nakayamatoge, Asahigaoka, Rankoshi Chisenuppuri… I have a van and we can go together for a ski safari, moving from one place to the other based on the weather and snowfall conditions.
