Join me for a 1-day trekking program in Japan! Visit the beautiful area around the Yamu-Nai Stream in Rishiri, Hokkaido. Perfect for beginners.
Yamu-Nai means “cold river” in Ainu, the language of the indigenous people living in Hokkaido. This particular area, beyond the forest line, has snow all year around. Its clear and fresh atmosphere makes Yamu-Nai Stream a great trekking area.
There are 2 possibilities for this program: a morning tour, and an afternoon tour.
First, I will meet you at the Maruzen Inn, in Reramosir – at 8:30 am for the morning tour, and 1:30 pm for the afternoon tour.
If you plan to arrive by ferry, for the morning tour you will need to take the 7:15 am from Wakkani to Oshidomari (arrives 8:55 am). For the afternoon tour, take the 1:20 pm ferry from Rebun Island to Oshidomari (arrives 2:00 pm).
After registration, we will transfer from Oshidomari to the Oniwaki area to the starting point of our hike for about an hour. Next, we will transfer beyond the forest line to begin our trek!
For about an hour, I will guide you across this gorgeous area. After our trek, we will drive back to Oshidomari, or your hotel in the area.
The whole tour takes around 3 hours.
Note that this tour is flexible. If you plan to take a different ferry, we can adjust the itinerary.
The equipment you will need includes: comfortable climbing clothes, a backpack, trekking shoes, rain wear (tops and bottoms), a hat or cap, an empty water (which can be re-filled with water from the springs), sunscreen, a camera, and a pen and notepad (if you’d like to do some alpine flower observation!).
For this program, I will take groups of up to 7 guests.
Cancellation Policy:
– 1 day before the trip: 50% of the price
– On the day of the trip: 100% of the price
This program is available as from 2018.

Ski Guide
I was born on the island of Rishiri in 1969. I still live here today! Since my childhood, I have spent most of my time in the sea, going fishing, and in the mountain going skiing. I’m a ski guide (level 2) from the Japanese Mountain Guide Association. I’m the only one on the island. I have reached the summit of Rishiri more than 500 times… It’s my great pleasure to guide here and let people from all around the world discover this beautiful island all year round. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you are looking for a local expert to guide you in Rishiri. Besides mountain guiding, I'm managing a family hostel here so I can help you with the accommodation as well.

We had an amazing time in Rishiri thanks to Toshiya and Maki. They create a very special atmosphere around, where you feel truly welcome. Very friendly and kind people running a top notch operation with big smiles. Everything is well organised, starting with the pick up from the ferry, very comfortable rooms, extremely tasteful food, place to store and dry your gear, getting to the ski touring spots, getting snacks on the way & the backcountry experience is something just spectacular. Rishiri is a very special place. Toshiya is experienced, smart, professional guide; who knows exactly where and when to be around the island to get the best possible experience of snowboarding. We really enjoyed the tours, the pace, the relaxed vibe, powder snow. Pity we could not stay even longer :( Arigato gozaimas & matane!

Incredible experience, we had such an amazing time! The places we went were beautiful, accommodations were really comfortable. Food was so well made... We would love to come back one day. The skiing there was beautiful even in March, we got heaps of powder the last two days in beautiful terrain.

Toshiya is a perfect guide. His lodge is homely and welcoming and he knows the mountain extremely well. He is fun to ski with and will show you deep powder on storm days and beautiful runs with views of the mountain and ocean on clear days.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
